- ruddy, on 12/16/2007, -34/+22when i hear someone died, i usually feel sorry for them and their family. then theres people like you who thinks its a perfect opportunity to push your political views.

- ArchangelZLT, on 12/16/2007, -5/+6When people feel sad for those died at war merely and don't attempt to make a difference by advocating some political views opposing the war, I feel pretty sorry.
- Swift2, on 12/16/2007, -2/+6What killed him? The war. Of course, we have to just shut up.
When you're at war, there are too many individuals to care about.- mightydavefish, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it was the soldiers shooting him that killed him.
"The war" didn't do *****.
Quit making excuses for murder.
I guess you don't have to feel responsible when you can just blame "the war".
- mightydavefish, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it was the soldiers shooting him that killed him.
- filemeaway, on 12/16/2007, -8/+24@ruddy
Don't you understand? It's people like you whose apathy has caused this bloodshed. Feeling sad is appropriate, but it's dangerous to ignore the reasons why such a tragedy has happened. Ask questions, hold leaders accountable, and for God's sake start thinking.- MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/16/2007, -6/+6No it's cowards like Bush, who have no idea what they're doing, are put in charge, lie, and refuse to take responsibility for any of their mistakes.
- boflaade, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4Bush may have caused the invasion but he was not alone. The troops over there, volunteered.
- ruddy, on 12/16/2007, -10/+5Apathy causes bloodshed? Apathy and and ignoring the reason this happened are two completely different subjects. Yes, question why it happened. Yes people should be held accountable for this. Using his death for a quip isn't exactly the right thing to do.
- ArchangelZLT, on 12/16/2007, -4/+2That's exactly Busshie-point-of-view. What you mean is that civil rights advocators who use the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. to support their political ideas are wrong - hell, just because they shouldn't "use his death for a quip"!
- filemeaway, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Wake up.
Yes apathy causes bloodshed. The OP alluded to the absurdity of Bush's absurd, illegal invasion in the name of democracy. When you fail to recognize that, you're affirming the corrupt and reckless administration. If you ignore their immorality and give them free reign, you're in essence asking to live in a totalitarian society. A place where warmongering leaders can do whatever they please, at a high cost: the blood of soldiers and, in this case innocent bystanders. Quips grounded in truth are appropriate, more so than defending murderers, Ruddy.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/16/2007, -6/+6No it's cowards like Bush, who have no idea what they're doing, are put in charge, lie, and refuse to take responsibility for any of their mistakes.
- NoStoppingUs, on 12/16/2007, -10/+8when will the democrats decide to end this war? as far as im concerned, they could stop it tomorrow, but refuse to. thus, the blood of every civilian killed since they gained control is on their hands. they were elected for a reason. instead, we get a near government shut down because they're more concerned about politics than policy. thanks!
- captric, on 12/16/2007, -4/+5The blood of every civilian killed is on the killer MORON!
- Swift2, on 12/16/2007, -2/+3You're wrong. Senate democrats do not have enough anti-war votes often to get the bill introduced (60 votes), let alone to get it past the vile soon-to-be-ex president.
- NoStoppingUs, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1its called "stop funding the war".
all they have to do is sit on their asses when that bill comes around. guess what happens? the appropriations dont get passed, thus, no money for the war! its not rocket science, really.
- NoStoppingUs, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1its called "stop funding the war".
- mightydavefish, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1YAY!
A rightard comes out blowing his ***** horn! Tooot!
Yeah, the DEMS have been so into this war it's nuts.
Remember when you right wing ***** were calling them unpatriotic for daring to question the fallacious data used to push the war?
Remember how Bushie and the GOP pushed for the occupation of Iraq to a point where the ignorant ***** renamed french fries because SANE people in France were arguing against it? That was a Republican who did that.
Now quit being a dishonest piece of ***** and get your cowardly ass down to the recruitment office.
- MetaMars, on 12/16/2007, -9/+9America! ***** yeah!
- MrThirsty, on 12/16/2007, -4/+6democrats? how many republican candidates (besides ron paul) do you see advocating for the end of the war? I'm not saying either party is perfect but come on
- stubear, on 12/16/2007, -3/+2The recent crop of Democrat Congress Critters campaigned on ending the war. They lied, therefore they are held to a higher standard by their actions alone.
- Swift2, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4They've passed bills that would have started to end the war, what? Three times? And they've been vetoed by Bush. A number of other bills have been filibustered by the Republicans. Do you know the rules of the Senate at all? You need 67 antiwar votes to stop it. The Democrats have started each time with 49 -- because the Independent, Lieberman, would never do that (thanks, Republicans) -- and then there was the senator with the stroke. Okay, there's one more from Bernie Sanders, for 50. Add in Hagel and a couple of others, and that's it.
It's a sort of obvious technique: the GOP knows that when the block the vote, politically unsophisticated people will blame the Democrats for not "getting it through." What exactly are they supposed to do? Fly 20 Senators off to a secret prison and force them to vote against the war?
Elect more anti-war candidates.

- AliveInBaghdad, on 12/16/2007, -0/+19Hi Scott, this is Brian Conley, founder of Alive in Baghdad. right now you can see everything we know at the duggmirror url above. Omar Abdullah, our Bureau Chief called me last night around 9:15PM East Coast time. Ali's mother called him to say he'd been killed. We didn't have real details until this afternoon, which is when I posted the blog linked above. I will be continuing to update the situation at twitter.com/BaghdadBrian as well as on http://aliveinbaghdad.org when it returns to the land of the living.
- frieddonuts, on 12/16/2007, -2/+34Though I had only seen his work a couple of times before, looking through his archive, I can see that he was a talented and bold reporter trying to tell the truth about the War in Iraq. It's sad that he died such a gruesome and unnecessary death.
- dunderballer, on 12/16/2007, -30/+5"Alive in Baghdad"? They should have known there was going to be an militant with a sick sense of humor.
- gbarberi, on 12/16/2007, -2/+10"militant"
Did you read the article? Entirely?- dunderballer, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1yeah, aside from the northern region, the Iraqi National Guardsmen are pretty much Shia militants. 31 bullets in the head...that's more aggressive than guard duty my friend. I didn't just read the article, I read between the lines. Anyone want to place bets on Whether the reporter was Sunni?

- Jerky1312, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2I think after a couple shots, you are no longer standing upright. It sounds like the majority of those shots were after he was probably on the ground dying.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2I wasn't there, but he could have taken all those hits while standing.
Especially if there were multiple shooters.

- Chirp08, on 12/16/2007, -5/+36pretty sure 2-3 between the head and chest would have achieved the same, so what's the excuse his time?
- stubear, on 12/16/2007, -5/+3A couple of fully automatic weapons? I don't know, I'm just spit-balling here. You do realize that in a war zone there are bound to be one or two of these weapons around. If you walk into a war zone armed only with a camera, don't be surprised when you wind up dead.
- AliveInBaghdad, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4Ali was at home alone, at the time of the shooting. He was found dead in his living room by his cousin. The Iraqi National Guard stayed for 3-4 hours after the shooting. His body could not be taken to the morgue until 8:30 AM, nearly 9 hours after he is believed to have been killed. The statement from the morgue is that he was shot 31 times in the chest and head and was killed instantly.
- l00s3r, on 12/16/2007, -2/+13You've never worked with Iraqis before I guess. Aiming and shooting and trigger discipline are completely foreign to them. If you ever do have to work with them, make sure you are always behind them.
- solid12345, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3I've read stories from US soldiers who say that is their saving grace that the insurgents can't shoot worth *****.
- stubear, on 12/16/2007, -6/+1I should add that this story seems to be very fishy and one should ask what kind of weapon allegedly killed the reported? U.S. solider are actually pretty good shots. only a couple of rounds on semi should have been enough to effectively cause a kill. Perhaps this is the work of insurgents looking to dupe whiny little asshats like you, knowing that you will only ready the short write-up and react to that instead of looking into the actual facts.
- gbarberi, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Are you reading the article???
It was Iraqi Police not US soldiers; he was inside a house, not a war zone.
People read the article, then comment.

and welcome to digg, where we seek to learn more about what's going on over "just seeing neat-n-fun stuff".- arcticicedt, on 12/16/2007, -3/+2I have heard of it. However when a blog asks me to send money to a Gmail address via Paypal or whatnot it rasies my alert level. Also the way the page is worded leads to that type of opinoin that this is just a scam. How hard would it be to run a semi realistic site for a while then say oops Ali is dead now, Please send cash for the funeral? It wouldn't be hard at all. In fact there is really no proof one way or the other. I am not sure if he woudl appear on the "Dead Reporter" list that the UN updates each day though. I am not sure he was considered a real reporter.

- AliveInBaghdad, on 12/16/2007, -0/+6He was killed LAST NIGHT. As in we found out 26 hours ago. He died approximately 32 hours ago. We are still working on confirming everything. Alive in Baghdad has been producing a weekly program about life in Iraq every Monday for a year and a half, and irregularly since October 2005. We survive off subscriptions and donations but give our content away for free to viewers. We are asking the community of viewers and concerned citizens to consider giving a little to help his mother and sister who are refugees living in Damascus.
Sincerely

- angusm, on 12/16/2007, -0/+19"Alive in Baghdad" is a legitimate outfit doing good work. If you can't get through to their site at http://www.aliveinbaghdad.org/ due to the Digg effect, their videos are also on blip.tv at http://aliveinbaghdad.blip.tv/. Small World News is the parent company for Alive in Baghdad and their sister network Alive in Mexico (hence the 'smallworldnews' Gmail address on their Paypal requests).
It's good to be suspicious of requests for money on the Internet, but I think that if you look at what they do you'll realize that they are a genuine organization.
In the interests of full disclosure, I should say that I am a friend of Brian and Steve, who run the US end of the operation; I don't know any of their Iraqi correspondents. - darlyn, on 12/16/2007, -3/+1Well, scam or not, aliveinbaghdad.org's IP address is 82.165.135.166. - angusm, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1The webhost is actually sending a '302 Found' response that redirects to 127.0.0.1; it's a fairly classic response to an apparent HTTP-based Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, which is what the Digg effect looks like if you're running an underpowered webserver.
Brian from AiB says that they're trying to get a static page up (their site normally runs on WordPress) and get their hosting company to lift the redirection.
- SilverBack101, on 12/16/2007, -0/+24Man this is terrible. I subscribe to the podcast that they have up on iTunes! It helped showed the life of the average Iraqi citizen you wouldn't get to see on controlled Big Media.

The USA has been royally had by this administration. Absolutely everything this administration has touched has totally ***** the country and a lot of people over. Its not just incompetance, much of it is very deliberate.

- AliveInBaghdad, on 12/16/2007, -0/+11and1 is hosting our content, apparently we were foolish to use them. aliveinbaghdad.blip.tv for our video content. http://twitter.com/baghdadbrian to receive updates directly from me about the unfolding news about Ali's death and Alive in Baghdad in general.

- mal1964, on 12/16/2007, -7/+6Here are some blogs from Iraq nothing about it. I'm not really believing this
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bp1. ...- AliveInBaghdad, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Check Salam Adil's blog, there are many references to Alive in Baghdad, most notably the sister of another reporter for AiB was recently killed. Be sure the Iraqi blogosphere will respond next week, Slaam will, if no one else does.

- sonnybobiche, on 12/16/2007, -9/+7SCAMMMM!!!!
- darlyn, on 12/16/2007, -7/+13If anyone here wants to donate, DON'T. I think its better to wait until a reliable news source confirms this (a Google search just brings up a bunch of verbatim directly from this blog.) If you try the blog's main page, you will be redirected to a file containing the IP address 127.0.0.1. This could be due to the Digg effect, but its safe to wait a bit until it clears up.
- drtyfrnk, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3it IS due to the digg effect.
- gbarberi, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2It is the digg effect. This site was up and running while it was in the upcoming section.
- AliveInBaghdad, on 12/16/2007, -1/+4if you doubt alive in baghdad is legitimate, search for it on news.google.com we are carried on news.google.com for example: "sadr loyalists" "basra's border police" or just "alive in baghdad" We also recently won Deutsche Welle's Best of the Bobs for Videoblog category.
- nastronomical, on 12/16/2007, -11/+12Scam
- UrinalPooper, on 12/16/2007, -6/+2Millions of people die in a given period of time. All of their lives are worth noting but we don't have the time to note them all. The bell tolls but if we linger and listen our own lives will be spent and wasted mourning our brethren. Better to live and understand death than to wallow in its inevitability.
So, pretty much anyone can build a shrine to anyone else and expect monies for upkeep. It's an aspect of the irrational nature of mankind's sentimentality. Since the person honored is already deceased in most cases, the monies paid can be used for any purposes since no purposes are the concern of the dead. - crushfan, on 12/16/2007, -10/+4Admit it -- It was a great try for a scam..
- badrasi, on 12/16/2007, -11/+2i am not going to donate any money to terrorist family. That was his choice going to iraq and if any one give any bullcrap about spreading democracy in iraq then go kill your self. Because you still believe on every thing that bush told you.
- AdamGeld, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1I'm not sure that he supported the invasion.
- angusm, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6This may not be the stupidest comment I've ever read on Digg, but it certainly comes close.
"This was his choice going to Iraq" - hello? The guy was an Iraqi. He lived there. As for "donate money to any terrorist family", that's just beneath contempt. If you can't tell the difference between a terrorist and a journalist, well, maybe there's a job for you in the Iraqi National Guard, because it seems that they have similar problems.
Idiot.- badrasi, on 12/16/2007, -3/+0there is no difference in terrorist and journalist bcz both ends with IST. It does not matter where he was from, he still made a choice and im not paying a dollar to his ahmad terrorist family. We should support our troops. period.
- Groovemaster, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1It's truly sad watching simpleminded people like you who live your whole lives completely unable to see past the constant stream of ***** the mainstream media feeds you.
What a pathetic brainwashed cretin you are.

- spartan093, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Wow, you are pathetic. So basically, just because he's Iraqi, it automatically makes him a terrorist? Gee, why don't we just go murder every single Iraqi just in case? Here's an idea, wake up and try to use our brain for once. Hey, if you can manage it, maybe try to think about what they're going through over there because believe it or not, the world does not revolve around you.

http://digg.com/world_news/Alive_in_Baghdad_needs_ ... - Stevanoski, on 12/16/2007, -10/+4Is there a place I can send money to the Iraqi National Guard?
- gbarberi, on 12/16/2007, -2/+5Here is a BBC new article on this group
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/6195960.s ... - mackinaw, on 12/16/2007, -1/+4and from the other side of the aisle:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,307339,00.html ...- Stevanoski, on 12/16/2007, -2/+1GREAT story, too bad you will be dug down, only because it is on Fox. Wonder why the left fears new ideas?
- 1timeuser, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1its not new ideas we fear so much as false ideals.
- Stevanoski, on 12/16/2007, -2/+1GREAT story, too bad you will be dug down, only because it is on Fox. Wonder why the left fears new ideas?
- solid12345, on 12/16/2007, -4/+2People ask why they used 31 bullets on him...well there is your reason why we can't leave Iraq. The Iraqis can't put together a decent disciplined army to maintain control of their own country.
- boflaade, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1How do you know it wasn't "Friendly Fire"?
- tom500k, on 12/16/2007, -3/+2Tragically for all, including US troops, the US government kills journalists in an attempt to cover up the crimes of the US government.
It doesn't matter if the US kills journalists directly with rockets as in the war against the Balkans or via its puppet armies as appears to be the case in the assassination of the journalist who blogged "Alive in Baghdad".
Little wonder that the US is viewed world wide as the number one danger to humanity.
We must demand that the Rep. Conyers stop blocking debate on Rep. Kuchinich's resolution of impeachment against Bush's boss, Dick Cheney. Kucinich's resolution is co-sponsored by 24 other Representatives.
I fear that Rep. Conyers has lost his nerve and or integrity but as a political animal (in the sense that all politicians are political animals) he will do the right thing if we make it clear that he and other do-nothing, lying Democrats will be swept out of office if they continue to ignore they promise to end the war against Iraq and to restore the Constitution.- kilofox, on 12/16/2007, -1/+2Please tell me now the hell you know that it was the US Government that killed this reporter? Give me some proof, if you cant then you are just talking out your ass. Get it? Talking out your ass.
- kilofox, on 12/16/2007, -1/+0I'd rather have Conyers end the war than WASTE EVERYONES TIME TRY TO GET CHENEY IMPEACHED WHEN THERE IS NOT A CHANCE IN HELL THAT HE WILL BE CONVICTED!
I demand that Kucinich quit using the impeachment of Cheney to draw attention to his failing campaign for the Democratic Nomination. Thats all it is .... a publicity stunt.
- datapharmer, on 12/16/2007, -2/+3Small world news is definitely NOT a scam. The reason the details are sketchy about the death is because no one knows much at this point as far as why he was killed.
The website got toasted by digg, but will be back up shortly.
Please do not call Alive in Baghdad or small world news a scam. If you are doubtful, I encourage you to wait for mainstream news coverage of this death, but please do not make allegations when you have nothing to support them.
Gmail is only used for the paypal account so that monies can be kept separate (the donations for this are for a burial, not for the Alive in Baghdad Project). If you would like to do that you may donate on the separate donations page once the site is back to normal. - tigerbeat, on 12/16/2007, -2/+3It is sadly all too real. When I posted this they just had gmail for paypal. Now there is
http://smallworldnews.chipin.com
Just go to itunes and subscribe in podcasts to alive in bagdhdad. And as others have pointed out there has been media coverage of the show.
It is too soon for coverage beyond blogs (I was hoping this would help get some coverage) . It happened on Friday in Iraq. There probably won't be any coverage until sometime Monday
The site is down because of the traffic. Just do a search and look at the google cache
you can also see how it developed at http://twitter.com/BaghdadBrian at least til twitter goes down late Sunday - Syphermce, on 12/16/2007, -7/+2From what I read, he wasn't American so this is unimportant news.
- macinnesm, on 12/16/2007, -2/+3Idiot
- saltmiser, on 12/16/2007, -1/+2a real shame that this happened; if I had any money I'd send it to his family :/ watch the stuff guys, and bury all the "this is a scam" comments, it's not. sometimes a domain name will assign it's self as 127.0.0.1 as a counter measure to DDoS attacks. and the digg effect is at heart a DDoS...at least he didn't suffer though; if you read it they're sure he died instantly...poor guy...
- thunderclap, on 12/16/2007, -2/+2Alive in Baghdad reporter killed.
Wouldn't that make him 'Dead in Baghdad? - IsItTrue, on 12/16/2007, -5/+0Ya you can make a donation...to Ron Paul. And your donation will actually support Iraqi's, the troops and their families, as you will be bringing them home. Not just posing like some asswipe with a sticker on your car.
