- cosworth99, on 06/14/2009, -9/+45Can the rats see Russia from the island?
- DouglasQ, on 06/14/2009, -2/+35"229 years after a Japanese shipwreck spilled rampaging rodents onto the remote Aleutian island"
Japan needs to find a safer way to transport rats. - doug89, on 06/14/2009, -6/+32It almost makes me want to take a suitcase full of rats over there.
- ghatid, on 06/14/2009, -1/+21The rats probably took over the ship.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -6/+25St. Sarah drove them off the island...
- QueenTiye, on 06/14/2009, -3/+22Ok. New York next
- StickWST, on 06/14/2009, -1/+19Cool story bro.
Wait, what am I saying? That made no sense. - modpancake, on 06/14/2009, -3/+20In Soviet Russia, Russia sees rats.
- had3l, on 06/14/2009, -1/+17I for one am for the Simpsons strategy.
Just drop a thousand Arctic Foxes to kill the rats.
Then drop a hundred Siberian Tigers to kill the Foxes. - unknownpoltroon, on 06/14/2009, -0/+13Please film getting the rats into the suitcase for youtube.
- JimmyTheClam, on 06/14/2009, -1/+13Why not just drop off a few cats and check back in a few years?
- KingGorilla, on 06/14/2009, -0/+12And then we can send in the gorillas the beauty of which is that they die in the winter
- hoodedrobin, on 06/14/2009, -3/+15Yes PETA person... animals can do bad things also...
- jakereilly, on 06/14/2009, -1/+12They are trying to get the bird population back.
Think about it. - Tyrghast, on 06/14/2009, -0/+11Has anything ever really worked well for Australia? They always seem to be in the midst of some new calamity...
- mexicanmonkey, on 06/14/2009, -2/+13so then just drop off some dogs a few months later
- Jascol, on 06/14/2009, -1/+11Yeah, I remember it working well for Australia...
- alleged, on 06/14/2009, -0/+10It is if you have a rat infestation....
- MeatMountain, on 06/14/2009, -0/+9No Rat Island
- xerexes1, on 06/14/2009, -0/+7No, that would be digg.
- vgrisham, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6The alternative was a bridge to nowhere.
- SemiSarcastic, on 06/14/2009, -5/+11Reuters: the one stop news source for information you didn't need to know.
- directedition, on 06/14/2009, -1/+7Maybe because they kill endangered migrating birds that foolishly try to nest on the island. Frankly, they're in an ecosystem that wasn't designed to sustain them and they destroy everything else, sort of like the goat and hog population in Hawaii.
- SpinningHead, on 06/14/2009, -1/+7Thats why nobody will give Palin the nuclear launch codes.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -2/+7Am I the only one who came to this article hoping for pics?
I wanted to see some nasty island swarming with rats looking like the kind of place and Orwellian society ships political prisoners, but oh well. - Jeeto, on 06/14/2009, -7/+12In other news, hundreds of cats are flooding into Alaskan unemployment offices.
- modpancake, on 06/14/2009, -2/+7http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Island,_Alaska
- chinaman1212, on 06/14/2009, -1/+6What? did you ask "What if they come back on driftwood?"
From Japan?
Are.......are you serious? - notoneofus, on 06/14/2009, -1/+6Decon?
- cygnus2112, on 06/14/2009, -1/+5Drop rat poison, the ones that survive will most likely graduate?
- Falldog, on 06/14/2009, -1/+5Since then they've passed laws requiring double hulls.
- modpancake, on 06/14/2009, -1/+5I can't edit the text. :(
- WilliamAdama, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4"I'm simply saying that life, uh... finds a way" - Dr. Ian Malcolm
- WilliamAdama, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3No body cares about PETA, they're the ones that kill animals at shelters and then store them in freezers.
- harvinator24, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3That "cute" rodent, eats the crops that humans need and infect the livestock that humans need. They go into stores, and eat through casings so they can go in the meat tray and take ***** on the food. They eat through boxes of food, that you i can no longer eat because, it's tainted. Thus the store needs to by new food, and the wholesaler has to replace the food. Rats go into to peoples homes and contaminate their silverware and food, eat through their food and ***** and die in between walls, a smell your hippy ass can't imagine.
- SpinningHead, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3"How do you think non-human primates got to South America from Africa? And this is way before anything resembling humans got there..."
During the Mesozoic Era Africa was still very close to South America. They didn't come over after the current gaps between the continents had developed. - dhs100, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3Um...they walked? Animals and humans have been walking from Africa, through Europe and across America for a very long time - up until very recently in fact. I'm guessing the 'walkers' outnumber the 'floaters' by...hmmm...a billion to 1?
- deepbl, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3Eat ***** and die.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -3/+6They should have got some cane toads.
- MikeOxbigg, on 06/14/2009, -6/+8Sounds like they're running a hell of a show up there.
Between culling a rat infestation and the Palins being the closest thing they have to stars; who wouldn't want to live there. - andrewh7, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3Are you talking about the rats or the Palins?
- WilliamAdama, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2I too wanted to see pics, lately there seems to be a lacking of pictures alongside articles on digg.
- deepbl, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2James Cagney never said that to anybody.
- Teburninator, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3Nope, but Nancy Pelosi might need to find a new home :P
- MrZaiko, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3You're so 2008
- nabarg, on 06/15/2009, -0/+2because they are not native (thanks to humans) and rip the heads off of young seabirds at will - it's horrific. seabird numbers are in drastic decline all over the world due to habitat loss, overfishing, long-lining, plastics, invasive species (i.e. rats, cats), etc. etc. it's refreshing to see something finally being done about the rat problem.
- skipvt, on 06/14/2009, -2/+4"After dropping poison onto the island from helicopter-hoisted buckets for a week and a half last autumn, there are no signs of living rats and some birds have returned"
But they're not expected to survive due to the overwhelming proliferation of poison... - WilliamAdama, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2Cats also can climb trees and eat birds.
- MrThirsty, on 06/14/2009, -4/+6The gorillas will freeze to death in the winter
