Airlines cover up Federal Law allowing travel without Passports!
chron.com — The new 'official' change in the Passport Law is not 'new'! The Airlines have been hiding the fact that the Law allowed them to let you travel if you could show 'good faith evidence of having attempted to obtain a Passport. This has been effective for months...and yet they have been denying you this freedom!

- shaman1947, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As a Travel Agent we have Clients that have been denied boarding...and that makes us feel bad specially when we found out they did not have to be denied...and that the Airlines were just keeping quiet about the 'grace' the Federal Law had permitted months ago! Plus so many others have been put under so much undue stress...that we are glad we found out about this and were able to get the Houston Chronicle to investigate and write a story!

- fisheyeguy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Airlines: You can't travel without your passport.
Traveler: Yes I can; I applied for my passport 3 months ago, but it didn't arrived. Here is my proof.
Airlines: Sorry, not our problem. You're screwed.
Government: Actually they can travel if they have proof they applied.
Airlines: Yeah, we know, but that would mean more work...
Traveler who missed flight: !!?!**FDGH$%! - evand22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I hate passport purgatory!!!
- levining, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0yay! down with international borders!
- Enlightenment, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The news of mandatory passport for those countries were announced years ago!!!
Who fault is it: both travelers and government. Travelers for waiting yeah you, online ticket sales, and government for not staggering the deadlines even more.
Travelers, yes you should have applied sooner.
Online ticket sales, should have large font warnings for all out of country flight destinations! This flight is less than 4 months away, do you already have a passport, if not then it isn't our responsibility if you don't get one in time.
The government should had created 2 or 3 times the number of deadlines, splitting up Canada into 2 or 3 deadlines, splitting up Caribbean into multiple deadlines, and Mexico into multiple deadlines, then should make sure that each deadline wasn't closer than 2 months to each other.
I didn't book a flight until I received by passport....wow what a flipping concept....get your passport way early.
