Aircraft crashes into NYC building
msnbc.msn.com — NEW YORK - An aircraft crashed into a high-rise apartment building on Manhattan's Upper East Side in New York City on Thursday, NBC News reported. There were conflicting reports about whether it was an airplane or a chopper

- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12anyone else notice that if the plane hit the 20th floor of a 50 floor building, then the picture in the article is innacurate?
there are not 30 floors above where it looks like the smoke is coming from - Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the impact is actually on the other side of the building, you can see the building covers some of the smoke. It's a very smoky picture to begin with, though.

Still doesn't look like a 20th floor crash with 30 stories above in a 50 story building.
I realize its petty, but its something that bothers me. - ToddML, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The answer to the conundrum is that there's a hospital below those floors, so the floor numbers are off. Its the equivalent of a 50 story building, but there are only something like 30 floors of condos.
- happyfappy, on 10/12/2007, -44/+17This must have been an inside job...
The photo CLEARLY indicates debris left over from a guided missile launched by the Pentagon, striking at the same time as a controlled explosion coming from within the building, timed to coincide with the crashing of a remote-controlled aircraft...
Coincidence? I think not... - sinfree, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Please tell us you are being sarcastic.
- dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3From AP
"Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was indication of terrorism in the crash, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports are operating normally."
Typo? Maybe... - happyfappy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Only the Pentagon -- using advanced extra-terrestrial technology harnessed by conservative think-tank PNAC -- could have ordered a strike of this precision and magnitude...
- happyfappy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37@sinfree:
In 1975, the Pentagon ran clandestine simulated trials of crashing a small airplane into a random building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan -- Codename: Project Lemur.
The coordinator of the project? That's right -- Donald Rumsfeld.
Fast forward 20 years. The government issues a $2.5 billion grant to the UMBRELLA corporation. The purpose? Creating a remote controlled aircraft capable of crashing into a random building on the Upper East Side -- with Military Precision.

- CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47This is about the same as a car crashing into a building and starting fire...this is a small airplane traveling at small speeds with aircraft fuel. 9/11 was a huge airplane, going at about twice the speed loaded with jet fuel.
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37hey moron, a small plane or a helicopter carries a lot less fuel than an intercontinental jumbo jet
- oakj423, on 10/12/2007, -19/+2and if i right was this guy complaining about fuel burning hot? well if it burns cold...tell someone about it, or build a new engine.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42I think what people fail to realize are the following two obvious points:
1.) Steel beams to not need to melt in order for the unimaginablly massive tons of weight that they're holding up to crush them. They just need to heat up enough to sacrifice some of their structural integrity.
2.) When 400 tons of metal crash into a steel beam at ~300-400 mph, it WILL cause damage to that beam. The beams holding up the WTCs were not invulnerable to the harsh reality of physics. When you take a beam, damage it, and then heat it up, and when said beam has tons and tons and tons of weight on top of it, it's going to fail. And when a building that large starts to fail, the massive pressure forces that act upon it cause it to actually implode -- the building is sucking itself into the ground.
That said, I believe jonj said it correctly when he stated, "hey moron, a small plane or a helicopter carries a lot less fuel than an intercontinental jumbo jet" - roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9The reason the wtc fell was because of heat, and another huge contributing factor.
It was the way the building was built. It was built lighter than most buildings. Instead of big I-Beams across the floors, there were big "tabs" kinda along the edges. The floors were big plates of steel. All that had to weaken was the tabs. Once they did, a level (big slab of steel) fell on the one below, which would already be weakened by the heat....so it falls, this happens a few times, then even unheated ones collapse. Thats whey it fell so perfectly down and not sideways, the motion of the floors falling out of the tabs would have been linear and downward...
This was more than likely nothing more than an accident. It isnt that uncommon for idiots to want to be daredevils and fly though a city...much like basejumpers and such.
Even though its illegal, they think "i know what im doing, its safe" then stuff happens. - cbbspike, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2@masamunecyrus and roosterjm2k2
Oh thank you... finally someone understands.

- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Very possibly not. They will scramble to be on the safe side. That is what they are there for.
- Ozdachs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2KGO radio reports that fighters have been scrambled nationwide to fly air patrol over cities. FBI still saying it wasn't terrorism, and NORAD is reported to say that doesn't see any suspicious aircraft activity either.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2They say it's a helicopter.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The FAA has stated it's a fixed wing aircraft, not a helicopter. Just announced on TV as I typed this.
Also a body was found between two cars. - b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@sockpuppets
it's now reported there are two bodies...which were found on the ground underneath the wheel chassis of the aircraft.

While I was searching on the internet through CNN, Reuters, Google News...they had the most information up the fastest, with pictures.

- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6I've seen two choppers go down in the east river since working in the financial district (almost 2 years). Certainly not too surprising to hear one hits a building. A little scary since it's only 7 blocks away from the high-rise luxury apartment building I reside in.
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You live there too?
- schabrat14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"only 7 blocks away from the high-rise luxury apartment building I reside in" lmfao wtf?!
- SuperGhost, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6oh... you had to throw luxury in eh? Well my ghetto apartment in Compton-like California is where I am staying.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@schabrat - I had the same reaction when I read that. Only a certified jackass would type that.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Just saying, my building is pretty much the same exact type of building (I copied and pasted from an article) as the one hit.. only a few blocks north. I, by no means, live in luxury.. the people paying $20,000/mo for apartments above me probably do, though.
- harrisonpowers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1luxury, heh
- drpeppper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6yea thats just 2 streets away from where i parked my lambo with the pre-release of my PS3 in the trunk.
- benshariff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have a better view from my cardboard box around the corner from starbucks.
- wibblewibble, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2One New Dorker eyewitness said on the news it was a 4 seater plane (because she counted the seats I'm sure and is an expert on planes).
They are playing up the "expensive" "diplomat" "apartments" "extremely saught after apartments" on the news to add DRAMA, how snobbish can one get? Thats worthless ***** now isnt it (unless you took out insurance before the crash :) )
That just confirms Americans are so materilistic and wanting to be "part" of something and have a "connection" to an event.- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Or it just means our media sucks.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5there are cheap apartments in Manhattan?
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Well, saying "apartments" was relevant. A residential apartment building is usually pretty empty on a weekday, as opposed to an office building.
@Lumiras:
The cheapest one I found had a shower in the kitchen and the toilet outside of the apartment. $700/mo, I think. - greedonever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@gharding. Can you send me that listing? It's an awesome bargain. :)
- KSettes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37This is clearly a failure of the Clinton Administration.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Digg is really going downhill. You can't swing a cat anymore without hitting an out-of-work ABC political drama writer.
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Absolutely. If Clinton had just put in better aircraft regulations this would never have happened. And Clinton is to blame for the bad batteries in my laptop too.
- tokyomonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Zenn, I believe he was using a tactic commonly employed by many people, known as "sarcasm"
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@tokyomonster
Sar...ca...sa..m? What is this thing you speak of?
PS - I wasn't serious either.
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Let's just hope and pray for those living in the building. Don't let anger and paranoia cloud the reality that lives are likely lost in this tragic accident (from what we know so far).
You can start your conspiracy theories when the situation warrants it, and currently, it does not. - stuclach, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I really wish someone would mention that it occured on the 11th.
- wibblewibble, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1You just did :)
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3yes, I'm sure terrorists are really into making their attacks occour exactly a month apart.
Also, this doesn't have anything to do with terrorism whatsoever, and it appears that they have things under control
- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3yes! i was waiting for an excuse to leave work early. 9-11 flashbacks!
- speel, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3Woot I can see it from my window
- ToddML, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1same.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1are you in the same room?
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9According to BBC and ABC News and to the Aviation people (sorry for the name not being full) but it was a Fixed Wing Aircraft (Small Plane). Not a helicopter.
This is also backed by eye-witnesses, the plane was described as doing 'acrobatics' before leveling out and going into the building. - blosto, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9And guess which news outlet was the first to mention terrorism?!
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,219921,00.html
"Whether anyone was injured was not known, and it was unclear if the crash was an act of terrorism."
:)
Anyone who immediately thinks of terrorism during these events like this is a brainwashed goon.- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7A plane crashes into a building after 9/11, it's impossible to not think about terrorism, brainwashed goon or not
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm currently in a Manhattan office building 20 blocks away from the crash site, and as soon as this news broke, terrorism was the first word out of everyone's mouth. I hate Fox News, but when a plane crashes into a high rise in Manhattan, it's the first thing that pops to mind. Probably just a drunken helicopter pilot or something, but it's a perfectly reasonable thing to speculate about.
- mikelikespie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Does thinking of people thinking it was terrorism count? :)
That's what I thought. "Damn, those people are going to blame it on terrorism" - toneii, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Intertesting that when Paul Wellstone's plane went down there was not a thought devoted to the idea that it may have been terrorism.
- jooks, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3omg it was north korea
quick get some troops over there killing people! - IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Anyone else noticing the morons trying to get on camera?
- JasonHilton, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Why the hell was this taken off the homepage?
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It's still there, Forrest.
- JasonHilton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's back now, it was gone.
- bUND, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Any truth to the rumor that Howard Stern cut a fart so big that the plane instantly crashed?
- EricCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5The South Tower in the WTC complex had a fire that spread to 3 floors out of 110 floors. As we all know, that tower collapsed.
This building is 50 stories tall, 2 floors are on fire. Proportionally there are more floors on fire in this building than in the South Tower during 9/11. What happens if this building does not collapse? What does that say about 9/11? I'm not into conspiracy theories but if this building does not collapse, I believe it proves that a fire can not bring down a building.
What do you guys think?- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I think you're mentally ill.
- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6it proves the buildings are build differently.
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You have to take into account the massive size and amount of fuel that is associated with a commerical airplane. If you work the proportions of fuel in that huge airliner to a tiny aircraft, you'll see that there is no way this fire could bring temperatures high enough to 'melt the infrastruture' of this building.
However, WTC towers were built to take impact from aircraft, I doubt this apt building was built with that much strength. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I think this plane holds a fraction of a percentage of the fuel that a commercial 7x7 holds.
- MarkCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3If this building does not collapse we've got some questions that need to be answered. World Trade Center 7 collapsed and an airplane did not crash into it.
- Beaver6813, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well lets see... oh yes it was an huge airliner going into the WTC and what went into that building.. eerm... ah yes a small plane. There is a difference. I'm not saying that a small plane going into a building is not to be ignored.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I think you're an idiot. These are two buildings with totally different architectural plans, made of different materials, that are encountering totally different types of impact. There's a world of difference between a fully-fueled passenger jet striking a building, and one errant helicopter.
"if this building does not collapse, I believe it proves that a fire can not bring down a building."
So if you shoot one idiot conspiracy theorist with a shotgun, and he dies, and then you shoot another idiot conspiracy theorist with a pistol, and he lives -- that means that gunfire can't bring down an idiot conspiracy theorist? - griz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The plane that crashed into the WTC was a jumbo jet carrying a whole lot more fuel than a small plane. That fuel was the main cause of structural failure due to heat.
- Chrysalid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Makes sense otherwise, but bear in mind that this is not the appriopriate place for WTC conspiracy discussion and that this building was not hit by a 50-ton airliner with tonnes of kerosene jet fuel in it.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I think the fact that fire has never brought down a building like that before or since 9/11 pretty well demonstrates that fire can not bring down a (similar) building.
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@evilTak - Name one other example from world history in which a building the size of the World Trade Center was exposed to hundreds of pounds of burning jet fuel.
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Building was built in the late 80's. Keep your misguided conspirary theories to yourself.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Gerz1219
There have been multiple instances of buildings having 10 and 20 floors completely engulfed for many hours with hotter flames than were present at WTC 1 or 2. None of them collapsed.
Examples: 1 Meridian Plaza, 1 New York Plaza, First Interstate Bank LA, Caracas Tower, ... - hotsake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neg, Eric..... Considering all fires have already been extinguished. *shakes head*
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10I think you're mentally ill.
