- danakin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+31Which looks better than some websites designed in '07
- geneticlemon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Photos are of so much value -- they really are worth a 1000+ words. I'm glad the statue is preserved at least in this way.
- Br0wn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15yep and while we are on the subject lets call every german child a Nazi, and how about every American kid a slave owner.
- ButterBuddha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17 stupid humans...always ***** up the beautiful things in the World....
- rhylan, on 10/10/2007, -8/+22If i could have one wish it would be to a child of that decade - i don't like being a child of this one
- cmpalmer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Yep, 1973 was a decent time for the country, right up until the coup by the Shah's brother-in-law which led to the Soviet occupation. The Soviet occupation was no picnic, but they did try to modernize the country somewhat (improving education and infrastructure) albeit under the failing Soviet model. It also wasn't welcomed by the more conservative Islamic militants who combined religious indignation with old fashioned "throw out the occupying infidels" guerrilla warface that begin the process of screwing up the country from both sides. The U.S., fearful of the spread of communism, aided the rebels (including our old buddy Osama). Of course, once the Mujahadeen threw out the Soviets, there rule was even worse as the country (and big cities like Kabul) were just divided into rival warlord territories like a middle eastern version of The Warriors. The warlords were so bad that the Taliban came to power and really started screwing things up, blowing up historical treasures, killing infidels in public executions, and trying to drag the country back into the dark ages. Now with the U.S. occupation (which I support much more than the efforts in Iraq - after all, the Taliban really WERE training terrorists, including the 9/11 hijackers) all of the former factions are trying to regain their glory days. Afghanistan has never had a really peaceful history - there are probably too many ethnicities and cultures mixing there for centuries in a society that doesn't exactly embrace diversity, but, again unlike Iraq, there might be a better chance at bringing something better to the Afghanistan. Oh, and before anyone brings up the U.S. as invaders, unlike the Soviets, we DO intend on leaving them basically alone eventually (at least we did in Germany and Japan).
That being said, here are some recent pictures of the country - it is still a beautiful country: http://www.ckphoto.eu/Afghanistan/Others/content/index.html

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Wow, digg managed to crash an entire college. Impressive.
- raz98, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13they are probably dead by now, ussr, talebans and usa took care of that.
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I just drove past the campus 5 minutes ago......there were two fire trucks there. I think they were responding to the digg effect.
- AliBomaYe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9These pictures are pretty good, but why the Pakistan pics?
Here are some pics of my family and I in Afghanistan (and some in America) throughout the decades:

If you go to the link above you can see the vast majority of Digg users are American. The rest are from wealthy, western nations.
Granted I don't know how many Americans go to Afghanistan, or the Middle East for that matter, on a yearly basis, but let's assume the numbers are low.
From that number of Americans that go to Afghanistan, how many do you think use/visit Digg? Probably not too many
So, yeah, he has a right to say that not a lot of us have seen images of this country. So get that stick out of your ass and enjoy the photos. - jokerthief, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10It's so sad that the Taliban destroyed that magnificent statue.
It reminds me of something out of Lord of the Rings. Something that Gondor would create. It's quite amazing. Peaceful Afghanis = An amazing civilization. I just hope they can find peace once again. - Torx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Judging by everything vintage, i cant tell if the pictures were taken in '73 or '07.
- bmxboy661, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8and every irish kid is after me frosted lucky charms
- Tolzmaniac, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13Not a single AK-47.
- Mosatii, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It's a community college.
- cmpalmer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not at the time this picture was taken (well before the takeover by Islamic extremists).
- XxFinalexX, on 10/10/2007, -12/+18Then ***** be proactive and make changes.
- pnarel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Humans can build cool ***** too.
- rhylan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Your right of course, what i should have been doing at the age of ten was rebelling against the system and protesting against those 'corporate pigs' instead of playing conkers like a normal 10 year old - all i was saying is that life seemed to be less plastic them days - and there's nothing i can do to stop that
f*ck you - ajzahir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm Afghani. My family immigrated to America when I was three and alot of these pictures are new to me. All my life I've only seen post-war videos on CNN just like every other American so it's great to see that Afghans were happy once.
- bostonboy1128, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5ITS AFGANISTANIMATION!!!
- fithanee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5ok...
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Nah, the guy's sideburns clearly date the pictures :)
- cmpalmer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+51973 was prior to the takeover by Islamic extremists.
- cubicrystal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's a beautiful country just so sad that it's been fd over by so many invasions.
- fithanee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I'm a muslim and everything i touch turns into skittles :S
- one321, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5rhylan, I think a lot of people feel the same way.
- crgnetworks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you mean, clearly terrorists now.
- legendxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4LOL
- faithfreedom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What's a bastard! Only dick head with such a dedication to stupid doctrine like Islam can do such a thing. The reason for destroying the statue is soooo LAME. They don't have money to feed their children but have money to bombard the statue for a whole month ? They were enraged because a Swedish didn't give them money but use the money to repair the statue instead. What a pitiful beggars! May they rot in Hell!
- Lobos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You sir, have lost the last shreds of your humanity by posting that comment.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10"We don't see much of"
Speak for yourself, not others. You don't know if an Afghani person is reading this post or whether others in the world see the country more than you do. - snypa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I definitely recommend a look at this site, with much more pictures of the old afghanistan.
http://www.afghanistan-photos.com/ - gtluke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3love the cj5
- cmpalmer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Just trying for a little context since a lot of immature Diggers have a tendency to just post one line comments and/or insults, many of which seem historically uninformed.
- TriTech, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Why would you say that? Do you think photography is a recent invention?
- soopertoll, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5This is just sad man. What a waste...
- edstate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4NOT A TROLL:...
but isnt the change due to muslim extremism? ...the women in those photos had thier faces (gasp!) uncovered.
...? - visigotik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Actually they were forcibly converted to Islam in the 19th century:

- garvallagh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow Rhylan, tough crowd tonight , dont worry too much though most of these numb nuts were weeping into there kool aid when GI Joes leg fell off and if they are so vocal in their rebuttal, where the ***** were they now that we are in this pickle.
- cmpalmer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I watched "Loose Change 2nd Edition" - it said to look under the couch cushions and, sure enough, there was a lot of loose change there. Oh, sorry, you mean that moronic pseudo-documentary hoax film about 9/11? No thanks.
- soopertoll, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2maybe because the taliban nuked it. just a guess.
