- JROXZ, on 01/20/2009, -0/+87Microsoft Flight Simulator 09 with Geese Environmental Hazard expansion.
- BlackSheep720, on 01/20/2009, -16/+84In response to the above, I think the BBC intentionally used two completely unrelated radar tracks to falsely make it seem that these two planes were going to collide; I went to the website specified and checked for myself; the US Airways plane is already in the water by a time any other plane passes over its position. That's really stupid of the BBC.
You can check here for yourself: http://www4.passur.com/jfk.html (just plug in the appropriate date and time; when highlighting the appropriate plane, you should look for AWE1549).
In addition, being a real pilot myself, I can assure you that air traffic controllers would have kept these two planes well separated. Even if the planes did pass close to one another, it was most likely controlled, with both pilots having the other plane in sight, and using their judgment to stay clear of one another. - madpainter, on 01/20/2009, -2/+67Most of the video is not really from the pilot's view, but it's still pretty cool anyway....and still amazing.
- meretrice, on 01/20/2009, -2/+45amazing landing.
Although I question their statement that he "narrowly missed another plane." It could be accurate, but given that he was maneuvering to land on the Hudson at the time, I think it is likely that the two planes were at drastically different altitudes.
Anybody have any idea on how close the two planes really were? - fgump, on 01/20/2009, -1/+41Did anyone else notice the volume setting on the BBC media player goes to 11?
- RunDiggMC, on 01/20/2009, -3/+43I'm sure all pilots are trained to handle every emergency situation imagineable, but Sullenberger's ability to execute under pressure is amazing. It's great for a positive story about a real hero to get so much exposure, because the rule of thumb for news tends to be "if it bleeds, it leads."
- HookmasterCH47, on 01/20/2009, -2/+28Do a barrel roll.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+20This is no way an accurate simulation.
This is 10 times better than BBC's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmoi9aTaTZI - heysuburbia, on 01/20/2009, -5/+24Sorta related...
As a tribute to the pilot I jumped the Hudson river crash site in GTA: IV 720p (Stupid yes, but it's all I can offer):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfET85CMu-M&fmt ... - CamoChris, on 01/20/2009, -1/+20People stop digging the parent up, he's wrong, if you go to the correct site:
http://www4.passur.com/lga.html
And enter the correct time and date:
Jan 15, 15:27
You can see the two planes, AWE1549 and N461SA, cross, and according to the altimeter when you click the planes, N461SA actually goes below AWE1549 (it's still in the air) and they miss by about 400ft. - holzp, on 01/20/2009, -2/+20I think in aeronautical terms "narrow misses" still have a large margin of distance.
- dickmnixon, on 01/20/2009, -0/+17Well sometimes you want, you know, that little extra..
- WhoaABlueCar, on 01/20/2009, -1/+17that pilot landed a plane in the river, preserving the lives of the people inside... and most women still cant parallel park or merge on the freeway
- n1eb, on 01/20/2009, -1/+15Unfortunately, MS Flight Simulator ends the simulation on contact with water, so you can't really try one (unless you're in a seaplane). Same goes for terrain crashes, that's always bothered me. Flight Unlimited was much better in this aspect.
- stuffblock, on 01/20/2009, -5/+18We need a bury brigade for these powerusers wrecking digg.
- Avaseal, on 01/20/2009, -2/+14The volume bar goes to 11!
- imacmike, on 01/20/2009, -0/+121549 is at 1300ft while N461SA is at 800 ft.

Use Jan 28th at 15hrs 27 mins to track the entire flight! - matthekc, on 01/20/2009, -0/+12I saw a woman pretty much parallel park on the freeway once :(
- holzp, on 01/20/2009, -2/+13Caught the plane in mid air and guided it down to the river. We know.

Stop stealing content from other users and maybe you guys wouldn't be harassed so much. - jguy584, on 01/20/2009, -0/+10That radar website is probably the coolest thing I have seen all week.
Here are a bunch of other airports for those interested:
http://www.google.com/search?q=http://www4.passur. ... - Nemic, on 01/20/2009, -0/+9They mention the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 as in to show the dangers of water landing, but I don't think both cases are really comparable. The Ethiopian Flight 961 had been hijacked and it crashed like that because the pilots were trying to safely land on it water while still fighting the hijackers.
Still an amazing landing by this captain. - dolbinau, on 01/20/2009, -0/+9If you crash into the water without crash direction (In FS9 anyway) you will just refresh in the sky again without crashing
- TurnipFarm, on 01/20/2009, -7/+16You're right, ***** this guy.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Try X-plane. water landings are doable in any aircraft (overspeed and you'll crash obviosuly though). Also the water looks amazing. scroll down for screenshots: http://x-plane.com/
- fprintf, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8Slashdotted... err, dugged. An alternative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G2TLqxWM04
- envytown, on 01/21/2009, -2/+10One line stating my thoughts on the power abusers is harassment? Wow...I've seen way more harassing comments than that. You, MrBabyMan, along with your fellow digg abusers go completely against the essence of Digg. If this is harassment, then so be it. You digg editors are ruining the site and I want nothing to do with it.
- santiago1, on 01/20/2009, -3/+11 You should try X-Plane!
- BlackSheep720, on 01/21/2009, -1/+9A few points to make. Firstly, N461SA is actually a helicopter. By this one can assume that it has a higher degree of maneuverability than an Airbus A320, and that it would have easily been able to get out of the way. Look here if you don't believe that it's a helicopter: http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNumSQL.as ... Secondly, both aircraft were most likely equipped with traffic avoidance systems which would have alerted them to the impending threat long before there was potential for an accident. Finally, the helicopter was under the aircraft, meaning that the helicopter pilots would have had excellent visibility and would have seen the plane easily. Anyways, it was an emergency and no one got hurt, so why are you whining?
- envytown, on 01/20/2009, -3/+10Yea, I got banned earlier today for commenting on a story submitted by msaleem and saying that he should be banned. I guess it's easier to ban the complainers than it is to ban the digg "editors".
- visionaryIX, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7Apparently the pilot hangs outside the plane.
- merreborn, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7So you can get the view out the front windshield, or so you can watch the pilots?
Either way, I'm not sure just how useful it would be. If anything, in a situation like that, I'd expect either view would only scare passengers. - imacmike, on 01/20/2009, -1/+8http://www4.passur.com/lga.html
Enter Jan 15 at 15hr 27min and click start. Look for AWE1549 and N461SA. At 15:29:01 they nearly cross flight paths, exactly as shown in the video. 1549 is at 1300ft while N461SA is at 800 ft. Seems pretty close if you ask me.
It was close enough to get his attention, as you can see N461SA sharply turn around to watch the jet ditch! - DaveBlaze, on 01/21/2009, -1/+8Relax, MrBabyMan. It's just the internet, right?
- flyingclutchman, on 01/20/2009, -3/+8its a cool video, but when a group can pretty much control the front page of digg, they are choosing which "cool videos" you see
- wettestwillie, on 01/20/2009, -1/+6Too low, Terrain!, Pull up!, WHOOP WHOOP
- aelias, on 01/20/2009, -1/+6Hey, did you know the volume bar goes to 11? That's amazing!
I hate the duplicate replies with a passion. - VargVikernes, on 01/21/2009, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d54UU-fPIsY
Someone had to. - Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -26/+30buried for mybabyman
- shadowblade989, on 01/20/2009, -1/+5You know how the new Airbus planes have all of the in-seat screens for movies and stuff? Since the first time I saw one of those, I wondered why they couldnt throw a webcam in the cockpit front window. Not only would it be fun for passengers, but I imagine it could be extremely useful for situations like this.
- McNasty420, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3Shameless ExtenZe plug, clearly.
- dolbinau, on 01/21/2009, -0/+3Actually, according to a news article "Kitty described the conversation as “matter of fact” and “very routine” and also remarked: “I was more nervous than they appeared to be, listening to it.” (based on flight recordings)
http://www.dancewithshadows.com/aviation/us-airway ... - heysuburbia, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3pc
- superfirex80, on 01/21/2009, -0/+3Was anybody else hoping that the simulator would include the plane flying through the birds?
- FoxOrian, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3By Jan 28th, I think you mean Jan 15th, right?
Its kind of chilling to see that sharp turn, then the altitude of the flight go from "900.... 800...700...600...500...500...500..." then it disappears. - inactive, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3I love that dayglo blue water you see in *****.
- WhoDoneIt, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3Or a package of bacon.
- charlietuna, on 01/21/2009, -0/+3I'm glad to see Sully given credit without resorting to the (ab)use of the word hero. What he accomplished was truly outstanding. It was heroic of him to take a second pass through the cabin to ensure everyone was out safely,
- Eoborges, on 01/20/2009, -0/+3...spoon?
