- Zera, on 05/08/2008, -10/+294No, this video is how they harvest KOSHER meat.
99.9% of animals for meat are killed via (description MAY BE DISTURBING) walking into a device that their head is strapped into to hold it still, and then a pneumatic metal rod (of varying sizes depending on the size of the animal) is thrust in a fraction of an instant into the animals brain, smashing their skull, instantly rendering the animal dead, in painless fashion.
DON'T BUY KOSHER. THIS VIDEO IS of a KOSHER killing. People who believe in various religions believe that Kosher is necessary because Blood is "bad to eat" because it contains "contaminants" and so they want to make the animal bleed out as much blood as possible before it dies. The pure Ironic truth is that the struggle the animal creates while being killed this way, introduces HUGE amounts of lactic acid, and other "waste" products associated with strenuous activity into the muscle. Kosher meat is total ***** based on religious conclusions that have been conclusively proved false. - Dietrich, on 05/08/2008, -16/+153This is only done because the Jewish religion requires that animals be slaughtered by slitting their throat and letting them bleed out. Non kosher meat is slaughtered by a pneumatic hammer to the skull - instant painless death.
So blame the Bible, not the Meat-eaters. - Providence, on 05/08/2008, -22/+110I'm thinkin' Arby's!
- jcweezy, on 05/08/2008, -8/+91what the hell is the point of let these animals suffer? Why not just give a straight shot to the head of something.
- archcvd, on 05/08/2008, -5/+78Is this honestly the best way of doing this? Seems to me that thing Anton uses in No Country For Old Men is a lot quicker and a little more humane.
- bstory, on 05/08/2008, -68/+140is it really any worse than a lion, tiger or other predator would do? Sure we know how to do things better than other animals but really what is the difference? You can't think that the cow would be any happier knowing that the fangs of a big cat that is biting into its windpipe, is the better way to die. While there are many better ways to kill our food I see this as a propaganda film by some vegetarian group.
- spect3r, on 05/08/2008, -17/+86I suppose that other predators rely on killing for survival. They also do not have a higher state of empathy that (some) humans do.
Some humans require killing animals to survive. However, the average american does not. 35 million cows are killed every year in the US for consumption... and it's not pretty (as you can see..)
Before you digg me down, let me explain:
I (personally) honestly can't watch this and not feel disgusted and sad. Therefore, as my own principle - I choose not to eat meat.
However, those that can stand to watch and understand where their meat comes from, then fine, more the power to them. I'm not going to propogate my own beliefs on someone else; it's not my place. But I do think that it is wise to let this type of footage be shown, so that everyone has an understanding and can make a proper, educated decision on whether or not to eat meat. We hear all the time from major beef producers "eat our beef" - but we never hear anything from the opposite side of the fence.
If you can take the aesthetics of it all and be OK with it - then fine! But let's not be fooled into thinking that our meat comes from the same magical place that santa and the tooth fairy come from...
My 2c. - Chahrlie5, on 05/08/2008, -4/+69Blame the jews
- sagat, on 05/08/2008, -4/+68Jesus, that's not Kosher....
....Actually it is! - Zera, on 05/08/2008, -5/+64This video is of a Kosher killing, to remove as much blood as possible from the animal.
Do not buy Kosher meat. (see above comment for my description of how 99.9 % of animals are killed) - Culex, on 05/08/2008, -45/+97Anyone else in the mood for a big fat steak now?
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -41/+91Propaganda. As a poster pointed out this is how Kosher meat is processed. If this was the method used to process the majority of beef I would have no problems with it.
Those who have the "PETA mentality" need a stern shot of reality. According to the poll results linked at the bottom of the post about 3% of the US population are vegetarians. The majority enjoy beef, get over it. Quit trying to force your extreme beliefs on everyone else. Seriously, of all the ***** that's ***** up in the world you're focusing your energy on how cows are processed?

- iFrikkenR, on 05/08/2008, -0/+39It's called a captive bolt. "captive" becuase the bolt never leaves the gun. it smashes the front of the skull causing an instantaneous brain concussion, stunning the animal. then animal is then actually killed by slitting the throat and bleeding it out. the animal goes throught this mostly painlessly due to its stunned state.
not 100% foolproof of course, but it IS much better than jsut bleeding the animal out - FirstDivision, on 05/08/2008, -7/+40I haven't seen this yet so I'm going to throw it out there:
" I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals. I'm a vegetarian because I hate plants. " - Zera, on 05/08/2008, -2/+31It's fool proof when the metal rod penetrates the skull.
Plus, the animal still feels that immense pain of having it's throat cut to the bone. C'mon. - AndrewDB, on 05/08/2008, -4/+33Anyone else reminded of the Simpson's where Troy McClure took Little Timmy(?) through the meat factory?
I think it was the Lisa The Vegetarian episode.. - inferno10, on 05/08/2008, -7/+35Ralph: "When I grow up, I'm going to Bovine University!"
- longbow486, on 05/08/2008, -4/+30Homer: Are you saying you're never going to eat any animal again? What about bacon?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Ham?
Lisa: No.
Homer: Pork chops?
Lisa: Dad, those all come from the same animal.
Homer: Heh heh heh. Ooh, yeah, right, Lisa. A wonderful, magical animal. - seanieb, on 05/08/2008, -9/+34Lots of people here are completely missing the point, this is not how most meat factories kill animals.
A bolt into the head, then bleed them out is the way it usually happens. This is just needlessly crewel.
And I'm no hippy. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -4/+30Bleeds out immediately? Excuse me?

IT's barbaric, it's flawed, it's useless, it's stupid. - inactive, on 05/08/2008, -5/+28Like I needed another reason to think religion is bad?
- lotus22, on 05/08/2008, -17/+40If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.
- Zera, on 05/08/2008, -7/+29Someone has dug me down, but here is the Wikipedia article on Dhabihah, the accepted method of slaughtering animals for sale of Kosher and Halal meats:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhabi%C4%A5a
FTA: "This method of slaughtering animals consists of a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck, cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides but leaving the spinal cord intact. The objective of this technique is to more effectively drain the body of the animal's blood, resulting in more hygienic meat, and to minimize the pain and agony for the animal." - DiggasWAttitude, on 05/08/2008, -1/+22I whole heartedly agree. Turning a blind eye to anything is a bad idea. Eat what you yourself would be comfortable killing - or at least witness killing. I come from a hunting family and I have no problem eating the animals that are hunted. To see the animal die at your own hands makes you not want to waste it in vain.
One other point as to the difference between animals killed in natural settings (or hunting) versus slaughter houses is that animals in the wild at least have a normal life until they are killed. Slaughter house animals mostly lead terrible, torturous existances. Also, naturally killed and hunted animals live in environments that need to be protected. More environmental protection in the US comes from hunting than any other source.
2 more cents from a white, latte sipping liberal. - orangekid13, on 05/08/2008, -45/+65it's called a slaughterhouse, expect blood.
"you can help stop this"... wtf? Somebody's gotta do it, I'm not going to be the one to go through all that trouble just to make a cheezburger... - cdtoad, on 05/08/2008, -3/+23chicken processing plant is worse..
- DaDrake, on 05/08/2008, -1/+20I believe most places do that. They use a nail-gun type device on large animals (and a shock-gun on pigs). Tho... shooting an animal with a gun in the head would be an INCREDIBLY stupid thing to do. Cow's heads are very dense and likely, you will have bullets wizzing around the room.
- elephantay, on 05/08/2008, -0/+19poorly placed pulp fiction reference.
you fail - DustinHill, on 05/08/2008, -6/+25It amazes me that some adults don't know that this is how things are done. Is it horrific for the animal? Of course it is, but I would imagine being hunted down and then having your jugular torn open then having a pride of large cats gorging themselves on you would be pretty damn horrific also. At what point did people start thinking that killing was a pretty thing? Perhaps it's because I grew up in a very rural area where slaughtering your own cows isn't that big of a deal. But at the same time we were never allowed to name the ones we were going to eat.
- iFrikkenR, on 05/08/2008, -13/+31DELICIOUS MURDER!
i'll take mine medium-rare with fries thanks - Zera, on 05/08/2008, -2/+20No, this is actually the most expensive way to harvest meat. This is a video of a Kosher killing. 99.9% of animals are killed with a pneumatic bolt that smashes the skull in a fraction of a second.
- jgsketch, on 05/08/2008, -0/+18The us has regulations upon how you may slaughter live stock. What is shown in the video is highly illegal in the US, but not in much of the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slaughter_%28livestoc ... - MWeather, on 05/08/2008, -4/+21Chopping the penis off entirely works even better at reducing STIs.
- hokie47, on 05/08/2008, -4/+21Livestock have pain receptors like us and very much unlike grain, corn, or vegetables.
- inactive, on 05/08/2008, -2/+18I've always liked that quote, but think about it. If they did have glass walls, it wouldn't do anything. People walk by the homeless, throw trash out their car windows. They're blind. They'd just grow accustom to ignoring the factory.
- Logicexe, on 05/08/2008, -4/+20There's nothing wrong with eating animals, but we should be killing them as humanely as possible. Hanging them upside down, slitting their throats and waiting for them to die while they stumble around is not humane.
- rspeed, on 05/08/2008, -2/+18Troy: Come on Jimmy, let's take a peek at the killing floor.
Jimmy: Ohhh!
Troy: Don't let the name throw you Jimmy. It's not really a floor, it's more of a steel grating that allows material to sluice through so it can be collected and exported. - smegthelight, on 05/08/2008, -2/+18This is just wrong - Not because they are killing the cow, but because they are being very Inefficient about the whole thing.
Why waste time waiting for the cow to flail about on the floor there.. They should have been killed off quick with a bolt to the head long before this stage.
Either this is just for shock value, or this processor is making my yummy cow cost way to much.. Yes, something has to change. - bluedostoevsky, on 05/08/2008, -5/+21that's not a good point at all. animals don't mechanically slaughter other animals by the thousands. they don't raise other animals for the sole purpose of killing them. terrible point and completely invalid. there are so many holes in that logic i don't even know where to start and, to be honest, you're not worth the time.
- ConfusedONE, on 05/08/2008, -0/+16You don't win friends with salad!
- follower64, on 05/08/2008, -1/+16Not the whole Bible, just the OT. But in those days, when food preparation was VERY unsanitary, a process like this was necessary.
- Logicexe, on 05/08/2008, -3/+18You mean the study in Africa that dealt only with AIDS that was later shown to be inaccurate and actually increased the risk of infection for women? Sounds great! Snip Snip!

- anstice85, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13I'm not a vegan as much for animal rights as I am for the health benefits. I don't know how or if the industry has really been affected, and I'm not looking to "convert" anyone to my side. People should do their own research without me preaching to them. If someone asks, I'll tell them.
- Chrontius, on 05/08/2008, -0/+13To be fair, it was in improvement at the time it was introduced. They didn't have firearms, or the industrial equivalent.
