- readwriteblue, on 05/04/2008, -0/+18What is truly amazing is how much kindness there still exist in our nation. We are continually assaulted with stories of how horrible we have become. Every day I hear that Americans are fat and lazy or greedy, sex crazed hedonist on a life long "spring break". Americans pictured as drunken, loud, crass, and serving only their own over inflated sense of self worth.
The truth as I know it is very different. The Americans I know are hard working and fun loving. They share soaring ambitions and boundless charity. What magnificent gifts they posses they humbly offer to share. The people I know think of themselves last after God, and country, and family, and those in need.
I have been blessed in this life. An American family stop to help me when my car broke down on the side of the highway. They drove me home even though it was many miles out of their way. I can't say why they stopped. But all over this nation thousands of times everyday the people of this nation do Good. There have been times that I have been able to give. - InRussetShadows, on 05/05/2008, -0/+4Here's how the floodgates of individual compassion and charity work -- when the government does not reduce your economic liberty, you are free to be charitable. Then and only then does moral suasion work. If everyone is convinced that the "government handles it", the poor suffer as bureaucrats waste and lose the money. Think about it like this -- if liberals truly loved the poor, they would never trust government to care for them!
