- Gerolsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+97Aunt Jemima's Magical AIDS cure. Only $6.99!
- dan4prez, on 10/12/2007, -16/+84You can be born with HIV, sex is just one way to transmit it. Being abstinent isn't going to stop the disease.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+65Col. Sanders is going to be pissed, they found the secret recipe.
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+65I'd rather AIDS victims in Africa get false hope chugging down some useless herbs & spices than following the last popular "cure" there-- raping virgins to get rid of the virus. Its sick that people in power (warlords, politicians, etc) promote false cures to boost their popularity; hopefully the next dream the Gambian President has prompts him to do something that will really make a difference and donate to an organization fighting for a real cure.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -10/+60It's also really counter to almost every natural drive humans posess.
- dynamitehacker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46Umm... he says the cure was revealed to him by his ancestors in a dream. If you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.
- Jawsh91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+39mmm, sounds placebo
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43@GodKiller
tell that to the dead american boy who got AIDS from a blood transfusion in a hospital.
sure abstinence helps reduce the spread, but it won't stop AIDS.
*dunno why it showing post higher up than him when i hit reply. something wrong with digg right now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40Yes, and staying at home 100% of the time will ensure you do not die in a car accident. OR, you could just wear a seatbelt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30@synaesthesia
The problem with the 'cure' is that people may start having careless and unprotected sex. If the 'cure' doesn't work, HIV will have just received a population increase because of the Gambian Pres. - gerry87, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26But it's just irresponsible to call it a cure for AIDS until it positively proven to be a cure. What sort of a doctor "can swear, 100 percent, that this herbal medication His Excellency is using is working" after no little or no testing? How many drugs do you know of claim to be 100% effective?
Biased or not, if it's true, it's dangerous. - airquotes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23that was eleven herbs and spices, and it actually gives you a disease.
- andycr512, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23Actually, IQ tests have proven time and again that RACISTS are intellectually inferior.
Blocked. - euphemizeme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"I dunno how much AIDS scares y'all, but I got a theory: the day they come out with a cure for AIDS, a guaranteed one-shot cure, on that day there's gonna be ***** in the streets, man."
-Bill Hicks - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Yeah, let them think they're cured so they spread the disease before they die. Brilliant.
FTA
"Ousman Sow, 54, said he's been HIV-positive since 1996 and had been taking anti-retrovirals for the past fours years until he volunteered for this program.
Four weeks later, he said he's gained 30 pounds and feels like a new person.
"I am cured at this moment," he said.
Asked if he had any HIV symptoms, he responded, "No, I don't. As I stand before you I can honestly tell you I have ceased to have any HIV symptoms."" - sonaro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16This is going to be devastating.
- scotus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15a) where did all the racists come from? damn, digg them down fast.
b) AIDS denial is a notorious problem in Africa. For whatever reason, even responsible governments like those of South Africa have elements that pretend HIV doesn't cause AIDS, or that random concoctions can cure AIDS. Western pharma companies sure aren't helping by not selling cheap AIDS cocktail drugs to Africa or allowing African or other countries like India to manufacture AIDS drugs cheaply. Patents and global IP laws are causing some problems. But ignorance and denial cause a lot more. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18@godkillers
besides for the fact that abstinence is not a cure, but a means of avoiding the problem to begin with, why don't you comment on the ***** article, you idiot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16No, you are NOT going to cure AIDS with herbs and spices from an old syrup container, being administered by a guy with no medical knowledge. Nonsense.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14It always amazes me that people this idiotic are allowed to reproduce.
- SebK666, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Loser... What's your IQ? 5?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If you give people a drug, and tell them that they may be cured from it (when there is NO medical evidence to back your statement) you not only give people false hope, but you don't do anything to prevent the spread of AIDS. In fact, you worsen the situation. If they think they can be cured, they will keep spreading it, by having unprotected sex, after all, now that there is a cure, what is there to be afraid of?
That warm fuzzy feeling it might give those who suffer from AIDS helps very little in the long run. False hope is rarely right. - Lane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9i believe it makes a difference..... (see placebo effect)*
- dynamitehacker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@ Rikkochet
One of the ways that AIDS drugs work is by delaying the onset of AIDS in an HIV positive patient. Unfortunately, they also come with some rather unpleasant side effects. When patients stops taking the drugs, the side effects go away, which will often result in them feeling better in the short term. But it also leaves them completely exposed to developing full blown AIDS, and when that happens they're going to feel a whole lot worse.
The "recovery" in the people who stopped taking the AIDS drugs and started taking the herbal concoction is exactly what would be expected: the side effects of the drugs went away. But the longest period of "recovery" mentioned in the article was 4 weeks. Wait and see how many are still feeling great (or even still alive) in a year or two. - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16Would you stop that rumor as to how to cure it. I've not once seen a legitimate source say that people in Africa believe having sex with virgins cures AIDS. Not one. Though the uncountable amount of times I've seen it used as fact is ridiculous.
- Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm sure as hell not waving a flag saying this guy's "vision" has solved what some of the greatest minds in medicine have failed to do in the last 20 years, but "skepticism" is not what I'd call a lot of the media's response (and comments here). More like "arrogant dismissal".
I won't claim that this man is the 21st Century Newton, but the reaction of the "good old boys' club" is the same as he faced in his time - emotional anger because we/they don't believe nor seem to want to believe that there may be something solid here.
In a perfect world, the reaction of the world would be something like Morpheus' reaction to Neo 'knowing kung fu' in the Matrix: a calm, measured "Show me."
Instead, it's really sad to see the knee-jerk ad hominem rubbish that keeps going on and on. - scrag10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I hope it works!
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16"His concoction has stirred controversy and anger among health officials who say the president's claims will bring false hope to the nation's more than 20,000 HIV/AIDS patients."
ya, instead lets let them know they will die so they have nothing to look forward too.
A false hope is all they have, and it's a lot better than nothing. At least that way they keep fighting to live and don't run around becoming terrorists. - arkmtech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9It's difficult to say exactly what this is or how it works - dietary supplements exist which assist in suppressing the HIV virus, such as Selenium, which in certain cases & dosages will trick the HIV virus into halting replication...
Such remedies only diminish viral-lode (sometimes to undetectable levels) enough so that the effects of HIV are nullified, though - HIV still lurks within the body, and as such, the remedy must continually be administered in order to keep the infection suppressed.
I'm all for giving people new hope and stuff, but this will need some conclusive studies before people will believe it. - obe1kenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I know it's not likely and it would be nice to have tests to prove it, but I would like to believe this. However, if it is true, will the UN or any Western nation or company say it works. It would hugely undercut their profits, funding. A little bit of paranoia, I know, but its hard to trust just about any large group of people, be it a government or corporation.
But false hope is a double-edged sword just like anything else. It gives them a reason to keep trying and fighting, but can also give them reason to give up the safer practices that some of them have learned. And I wouldn't argue too hard against your own will being able to help heal you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8AMA19, the VAST majority of people are not going to remain abstinent. The rational thing to do would be to use protection, and get tested often.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -16/+22@GodKiller
You're right. If people were less promiscuous, AIDS wouldn't be such a big problem.
Unfortunately many people don't consider abstinence an option.
@artifez
=>"It's also really counter to almost every natural drive humans posess."
So is marriage and countless others things which we accept. Whats your point? - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5so its fake..we go for every miracle pill for losing weight here in America too and these guys make millions if not billions of dollars off of people here doing the same thing, we're no better.
- Ocelot13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the stork brings them?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6this guy said is right "For a country's leader to come up with such an outlandish conclusion is not only irresponsible, but also very dangerous, and he should be reprimanded and stopped from proclaiming such nonsense," said Professor Jerry Coovadia of the University of Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No wai! X32 with Hoodia Gordonii has helped me lose over 30 pounds I now look fresher, younger, skinnier, and more vibrant than ever... isn't that right Anna Nichole....
Anna?... - Everglow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Beyondgoodandevil
Are you stoned? South Africa has an extremely high murder and rape occurance rate, and in the month I spent there I witnessed more aids related deaths than any other cause with the exception of murder! - smarten, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17But if you don't have sex, you can't produce children.
- Rikka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5HIV stork?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5> You can be born with HIV, sex is just one way to transmit it.
Aaaaand how are babies made? - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6But wait! Isn't cancer often congenital? Doesn't that mean that big, tough Mr. AMA19 should be advocating NO help for cancer patients so they'll be removed from his precious gene pool?
- insomuchas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A lot of medicines that work come from herbs.
Milk Thistle contains compunds that will completely regenerate your liver.
Fox Glove contains the heart medicine digitalis.
White Willow bark contains aspirin.
Coca leaves have a potent topical pain killer.
Poppies are what most oral painkillers are based on.
Pau D'arco kills fungus infections.
Echinacea causes interferon production and kills viruses.
All these are proven scientifically as well. - contact287, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If it works it works, but I think there is a lot to be said about the power of the human will. These people would perceive him as an authority figure, and perhaps somewhat holy given his dress. It is possible that they truly believe they are going to be better given this medication, and will themselves to become better.
- cabel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How funny. Everyone here is saying that this cannot be, cannot be! But how many people go to a church and believe in that load of crap too? In my opinion they are both in the same category. Science can prove whether the Aunt-Jemima Extra Crispy remedy works, or we could just pray that it does!
- foamcow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Oh for goodness sake, shut the ***** up you ignorant fool.
Is it possible to be THAT much of an idiot? Apparently so. - bronstad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5So, is it "relief" or cure? We know what his ancestors said, but I have funny dreams too.
- plato1123, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I always find it a little funny that people who preach abstinance are the least likely to have an opportunity to not be abstinant. =p
- arkhangel78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And... you know... you could actually learn something about the virus and disease and understand how it spreads:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aids#Transmission_and_prevention
As previously stated, sex alone isn't the only way to transmit the virus. Everyone could stop having sex yet still pass the virus through shared needles or infected blood transfusions. - topace3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ bigsurjune: http://zapatopi.net/afdb/build.html
@ dcshiderly: No, the disease is actually understood pretty damn well. You are wrong. Because HIV/AIDS damages the immune system, pretty much all of the "symptoms" are actually other opertunistic diseases attacking the defenseless body.
Also, this article is terribly depressing. It sounds more like they're describing some new special sauce their president created than an attempt at a cure... - pogfreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Simple! All we need to do is:
A) Test everyone in the world
B) Make everyone who has it "promise" not to pass it on -
