- rnwen2750, on 05/12/2008, -18/+254Let's contrast China's response to this natural disaster with the US's response to Hurricane Katrina. Within an hour, all commercial flights were suspended and the planes repurposed for sending aide workers and supplies to the area. Also within an hour, the Prime Minister of China was on a plane to the worst-affected areas. The military has already been deployed to start search and rescue.
- BishkekBuddy, on 05/12/2008, -8/+202I find your position to be terribly sad. The victims of this quake were not political figures - they were CHILDREN for heavens sake. I agree with you wholeheartedly on independence for Taiwan and Tibet but your complete lack of compassion for ordinary people is astounding. Digging down.
- jggube, on 05/12/2008, -11/+201What a tragedy.
- rnwen2750, on 05/12/2008, -2/+111Yes, since every Chinese citizen is responsible for their government's decisions. I guess that means US citizens should be lined up for slaughter based on the policies of President Bush.
- ginnipig, on 05/12/2008, -1/+100that's disgusting! a school crumbles to the ground, over 100 dead so far and 1000's still buried, mostly children and teens, there not government politicians. Have some ***** respect!
- Eezyville, on 05/12/2008, -4/+91Dude I know Bush sucks, stop reminding me.
- DeskFlyer, on 05/12/2008, -3/+89Death toll currently at 8,533:

Howabout a title telling us about the 8500+ people that are dead? - daeus, on 05/12/2008, -3/+72I wouldnt write them off just yet...
- halleyscomet, on 05/12/2008, -1/+65Communism at wo---
Damn it! - DryMaltExtract, on 05/12/2008, -6/+68Hu Jintao cares about Chinese people.
- IphtashuFitz, on 05/12/2008, -1/+57I'm guessing that China likely has a lot of buildings that aren't built to the tolerances of buildings in other earthquake prone locations like San Francisco. A 7.8 earthquake is massive. The Northridge one that leveled a highway in California and did a lot more damage, was only 6.7 in magnitude. Since the richter scale is logarithmic that means the one that hit China was over 10 times as powerful in amplitude as Northridge (and over 30 times the amount of energy released). I hate to say it but I'm guessing we'll be seeing a lot more major damage and many more reported deaths in the coming week. My heart goes out to all those affected by it.
- dshPls, on 05/12/2008, -1/+53They're kids, you *****. It really can't be broken down any more than that.
- Monkeydew06, on 05/12/2008, -1/+43CHILDREN you *****.
- w3v3, on 05/12/2008, -1/+44I find it sad that even before clicking on this digg story, the thought had crossed my head that there would be some pathetic excuses for human beings that would bring Tibet into this. The internet really does bring out the worst in some people doesn't it...
- DeskFlyer, on 05/12/2008, -9/+50These comments suck.
- halleyscomet, on 05/12/2008, -5/+46Correction: We only exist because Nature hasn't bothered to wipe us out. Yet.
- ginnipig, on 05/12/2008, -39/+85my wife has family in Chongching, and we havn't been able to get a hold of them yet.
RIP - inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+39The 900 school kids had nothing to do with their government's policies or abuses. They were high school kids that had a ***** building fall on them. If there is a tragedy in a school in America, do the kids have it coming because Bush is a douchebag? I respectfully disagree that they are undeserving of our sympathy, and my best wishes and support go out to them all.
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -0/+33Congratulations for winning the Biggest Digg ***** of the Week!
- ccfccp, on 05/12/2008, -0/+32You're a moron!
- BlitzBaby, on 05/12/2008, -5/+35What a sad tragedy. my heart goes out to all involved.
- snapple232, on 05/12/2008, -0/+30You advocate the deaths of civilians to further a political agenda. Does that make you a terrorist?
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -2/+30ur an embarrassment to the Taiwanese people.
- Coffeedemon, on 05/12/2008, -1/+29Jeez... what a scumbag.
- fr0ng, on 05/12/2008, -0/+27Yea man, those young kids and students are responsible for the politics in Tibet. I wish people like you could replace the innocents.
- Jus2Gud, on 05/12/2008, -1/+28Oh shut the ***** up
- viciv, on 05/12/2008, -3/+31i feel so bad for those bastards who keep saying "china deserves it".. i mean, why are they so mean to the rest of the world? it's not doing any good...
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/12/2008, -0/+27That's juvenile. I wouldn't use that to advocate any agenda.
- arnarag, on 05/12/2008, -1/+29As a foreigner living in Beijing I know the standards of buildings in bigger cities in China are high. The problem is that Chengdu is basically the only city close to the origin of the earthquake.
Here in Beijing, about 1500km away from the starting point, we felt a shock of 3,9 richter. Most of the taller buildings were evacuated and people ran out to the streets to wait for the police to tell them it was actually safe to go back inside.
Today has been a real bad day for us all, but my heart goes out to the people in Sichuan. The Chinese army is already down there helping and as far as I know we haven't seen a bad after quake. At least the government is dealing with this better than the US dealt with Katalina...! - norcalscan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+26Reading the CNN article at 7am this morning and there was already 4 cranes working on extricating the children from that school. In a California quake, the fastest people on scene would be CNN, followed by Fox, both asking people on the street if they felt the quake. Cranes wouldn't show up for a week.
- jimchou, on 05/12/2008, -1/+28Clearly it's unfair of you to compare the two - one is unexpected and strikes suddenly, the other shows up in satellite photos for days beforehand so it's possible to prepare.
Oh, wait... - kingmanic, on 05/12/2008, -1/+24Earthquakes cause a lot of hazards as well. Unstable buildings is a more immediate concern then Water born illnesses as there isn't a medication for being buried alive unlike most water born illnesses. Katrina's poor response was due to incompetence all up and down FEMA's command chain including the guy at the theoretical top.
- zombies187, on 05/12/2008, -1/+23China is not Burma. The Chinese gov is MUCH more open. They may not need or want help on this terrible thing. If you think about it, Burma is in a dramatically worse situation. China is still capable of holding the Olympics. Burma can barely hold up a 'will work for relief aid' sign.
- jinwuyin, on 05/12/2008, -2/+25I'm Xi'an, why this so shocking, because almost all major city in China can feel it, Shanghai, Beijing, Xi'an, Wuhan... the fear appears on everyone's face. You feel it, but you can do nothing about it, that's what matters.
- ArchangelZLT, on 05/12/2008, -3/+25You, sir, are an idiot. Even if it's 900 al-Qaeda terrorists buried in an earthquake, you should at least know 900 lives have faded away, and at least show some sympathy.
- airwalkery2k, on 05/12/2008, -4/+24Oh my. This girl I work with has family there. Luckily they're alright, but their home is ruined and they were forced to evacuate. It may be easy to shrug it off as another horrible, yet distant tragedy until you put a human face on it.
I wish them well. - Disregard, on 05/12/2008, -9/+29'Chongching' is the most hilariously Chinese place name ever.
- dOOBiEx213, on 05/12/2008, -2/+20You sir, are a moron.
- Emachine, on 05/12/2008, -3/+22Nobody cares about the Olympics.
- Monkeydew06, on 05/12/2008, -1/+17A human life is a human life you douche. And they're schoolagers... how do they deserve it again?
- nstanosheck, on 05/12/2008, -3/+20Thousands of Tibetans are not being killed each day dumbass. You fail.
- tim04, on 05/12/2008, -1/+18who..the..*****..CARES. As long as innocent lives are saved, does it really matter why it came to be? Jesus, a few hours after the tragedy and people are already talking about the political ramifications. NOT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE POLITICAL.
- myxyplik, on 05/12/2008, -0/+16What does Taiwan have to do with this?
And Macmangb: STFU! - bokep, on 05/12/2008, -1/+18@MWeather
So you've gone out of your way to defend all that is right in the world?
Shut the ***** up. - apetrie, on 05/12/2008, -0/+15If you had any clue about Buddhism you'd know that your statement is absolutely *****.
- wingk1314, on 05/12/2008, -0/+15Your comment made me feel angry. Indeed, you must be quite an embarrassment to Taiwan or where ever you're from.
- Hangly, on 05/12/2008, -0/+15The roads are out to a few villages in the mountains, so PLA troops are ***** WALKING to the area. That's ***** awesome.
