- Supergliding, on 11/30/2008, -8/+364Hmmm... let's see... keep loaded guns in the house with kids... teach an 8 year old how to use guns... then beat the crap out of the kid... and the result would BE ??? I still can't believe that kid could count to 1,000... and I'm wondering WTF was he doing to get 1,000 beatings ?????????
I just can't figure out why the kid killed the roommate. I'm thinkin the media is parceling out the information in little bits... typical... see how long you can drag it out so you can sell more advertising !!! - inactive, on 11/29/2008, -25/+3518 year old who can count to 1000 is a genius. Einstein is back.

- Doctornorway, on 11/29/2008, -10/+190Anyone else see the "Talking Turkey with pictures" on the side of the article? That **** is terrifying.
- reyoo30309, on 11/30/2008, -42/+183I don't think they were hitting hard enough. You have to make them fear you.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -22/+136Some of these comments are pretty ***** up.
This is a horrific story... - Teggles, on 11/30/2008, -8/+118Smacking is effective in moderation, but doing it constantly is the worst thing you can do. It promotes the idea to the child that violence is acceptable - his violent reaction was completely expected. I mean, 1000 times at 8 years old? That's insane. Please tell me you all think that's too much.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -4/+111Raising kids to be terrified of you sounds like a really good way to get them to do ***** behind your back.
- ElectricNZ, on 11/30/2008, -14/+103Entirely the father's fault.
- mrdude4290, on 11/30/2008, -5/+94This kid seems smart in the wrong way
- therealknewman, on 11/30/2008, -4/+92A man (child, actually) of his word
- kobach, on 11/30/2008, -0/+87you mean normal 8 year olds cant count to 1000?

This is a pretty ***** up story... - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -8/+87I wish this would happen to more people who abuse their children.
- replaysMike, on 11/29/2008, -12/+81Let this be a lesson to you to be a good parent.
- OriginalReplica, on 11/30/2008, -0/+67He did fear his father, that's why he shot him. Assuming that the kid didn't start counting his spankings until age 3, then to reach 1000 by age 8 meant that he was getting beaten two out of every three days for the majority of his life.
- soulonfire928, on 11/30/2008, -1/+65I was terrified of my mom. Woman's ***** crazy.
I did so much behind her back. Drugs, drinking, smoking...so, kayala seems to be right. - ryanhayn, on 11/30/2008, -35/+98Proof that negative reinforcement is bad.
- chronically420, on 11/30/2008, -5/+67the sad thing is, is it might not hit him for a number of years that he actually took the life of people, his father at that. he still has many years of psychological suffering ahead of him.
- moobyman, on 11/30/2008, -2/+60Thing is his parents probably just smacked him without actually doing any disciplining. I think there is a difference between just smacking your kid for doing something stupid (they are kids, it happens!) and teaching them right and wrong.
- UltX, on 11/30/2008, -5/+63Some of these horrific are comments.
This is a pretty story ***** up. - CkMaverick, on 11/30/2008, -0/+56Somebody... I am not going to say who. But I think you know him very well!
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -0/+49There's much stronger evidence that he's not surrounded by the best role models - for instance, the fact that he KILLED HIS FATHER.
- orion2013, on 11/30/2008, -0/+48living in fear is a horrible existence.

- sfacets, on 11/30/2008, -2/+44My son is sick! He needs punany!
- SuperCujo, on 11/30/2008, -0/+41That really puts it into perspective. If you are spanking your kid that much, you are doing something wrong as a parent.
- suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -1/+42lets assume that the father started spanking the child at birth. this means that in order for the child to be spanked 1000 times, he would have needed to be spanked around once per 3 days.
Obviously its unrealistic for the kid to have been spanked since birth, so you know that the frequency of spankings has been really high. (if you assume the father started hitting the child at age 4, thats one spanking per 1.5 days.)
I mean sure, i was spanked as a child too (i was a bad kid) but i dont think even i got hit once every 3 days. - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -5/+45I blame Mr. Rogers for giving this kid his 'sticktoitveness'
- ZubZerp, on 11/30/2008, -2/+40Why didn't they at least lock the gun up somewhere safe and then lock the trigger. Honestly though, especially if you have children in your home, you need to be more cautious.
- defy, on 11/30/2008, -4/+40That's some conviction there. Not sure about the exact situation, but you find a lot of this mentality in families with a lot of emotional and physical abuse. Usually you hear about children that have killed abusive fathers protecting their mother. Makes me wonder if it was justified at all, but the grandmother did seem sympathetic.
- eliburford, on 11/30/2008, -3/+38Bender: How hard did you say you had to hit him?
- antonio97b, on 11/30/2008, -9/+44Let this be a lesson to _never_ be a parent at all.

- solistus, on 11/30/2008, -0/+31There are important distinctions in parenting beyond "spank or no spank." Beating the ***** out of your kid won't magically make them a better person. Whether corporal punishment is ever effective is hotly disputed, but any rational person who thinks it is will admit that it's only valuable when done properly as part of a thought out parenting strategy. An 8 year old who has been beaten or spanked one thousand times - assuming they started when he was an infant that's still more than twice a week over his entire life - does not sound like limited use of pain-based punishment to encourage good behavior; it sounds like parents who resorted to violence every time anything happened that they didn't like. Clearly this kid was very troubled, and clearly he had a very dysfunctional relationship with his parents revolving around violence and resentment. When even relatives say they aren't surprised the kid could do it *because of how hard the parents were on him* you know things were not going well at all.
Anyone who thinks this is the "EXACT same way" that millions of kids are raised by parents who believe in spanking is an idiot. If your child has a documented history of severe issues rcentered around the fact that you "punish" them violently all the time, you're clearly doing something horribly wrong as a parent. I don't support spanking or other forms of corporal discipline, but to use this as an example for either side to fuel the debate is shallow and disingenuous. What this shows us is that long term abusive violence against small children can have tragic consequences. It is not an example of any remotely reasonable form of parenting in action. - eraser34, on 11/30/2008, -7/+37I'm not your friend, GUY!
- MasterPain, on 11/30/2008, -3/+33but this kid was disciplined alot and look what happened.
- indraneel24, on 11/30/2008, -1/+31Are they ripe? Let me squeeze them!
- sp89, on 11/30/2008, -1/+30kayala and soulonfire928, you guys are absolutely right. Being extremely strict and hard on your kids makes them end up doing all the things you don't want them to.
This is from my experience as a kid. - lukis100, on 11/30/2008, -5/+34Hardcore
- LexMortis, on 11/30/2008, -2/+31"Records indicate the boy had no history of psychiatric care and was not on any medication."
Does that even matter? It sounds like the kid got smacked quite often..
The medical/psychiatric check sounds like people want a way out.. to blame something/someone outside of their control. Not blaming the kid or the parents, but some inanimate object like a pill or so. Kinda like videogames... -
