Surely I had heard about this and blocked the tragedy from my memory. 90,000 people is twice the population of the town I grew up in. It's probably more people than any one human would shake hands with in their entire life time - except for the the highest of politicians.
A mere 3,000 people died in the September 11th attacks in the United states. Imagine that happening everyday for a month.
If you lived to be 78 years old (an accepted average), that would be on average more than 3 people per day every day of your life, dead.
Arlington Cemetery is full of tragic deaths from many decades, but this would have filled 1/3 of it in a single day.
