60 Die in Iraq; Study Warns Of Collapse
washingtonpost.com — More than 60 people were killed and dozens wounded in mortar strikes, drive-by shootings, roadside explosions, suicide bombings and other violent attacks in Iraq on Thursday, as a new study warned that the country was close to becoming a "failed state."

--Hey, doesn't that sound like the 1776? Damn British. What a waste of lives--on both sides. To think they could send their army across the ocean to control us. British imperialism. - hambend, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11That is to say, we're close to admitting it's a failed state.
- airmann90, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3I blame Clinton...
/sarcasm - Arch77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I dislike like thousands have to die before a few rotten apples are impeached. This commitment to leadership is insane. A few guys are wrong and bad, so the response is to get rid of them. It's so simple. But no, they continue to die, and those bad men continue to thrive.
- Barryke, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4failed state?

- Trusix, on 10/11/2007, -62/+4Yeah, but the American media and partisanship has been cheerleader's for insurgents since then, duh. Please go back to blowing Keith Olbermann with that line. You know we aren't fighting Iraqi's in uniform.
- tblasko, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26In what way does that indicate that mission is accomplished? What was our mission? Wasn't it to bring democracy to Iraq, remove Saddam, be hailed as liberators and make the world a safer place?
Saddam is gone yes, democracy is no where near in place, just the framework, we clearly aren't wanted there, and it's definately not safer in this world... so if that's mission accomplished to you than why don't you go blow Bush - fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34Just reverse the timeline, and Iraq is a success.

*falls off chair* - opticalillusion, on 10/11/2007, -30/+6You can't stop Muslims killing Muslims. They have been at it for 1,400 years. Muslims are told that when they "meet the unbeliever" on the battlefield, they should "smite thee above the neck and cut off all their fingertips." The Sunnis see the Shiites as infidels, and the Shiites see the Sunnis as infidels. There will never be peace in the Middle East or the world so long as the presence of Islam is strong within humankind. Winston Churchill predicted this in his book River Wars.
- PATSCRU, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23same thing was said for catholics and protestants, and they've learned to live together.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14How about just "you can't stop people killing people"?
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Wait, wait, wait. We were TOLD that there was no history of sectarian violence in Iraq, so obviously this is all a big put-on by someone, right? Or was Wolfowitz full of ***** back then, too?

http://www.iraqbodycount.org/
Taking the minimum number, 63,929, into consideration, I'd say that's a lot more than the 3000 or so people who died in the September 2001 WTC attacks. 21 times more to be more precise. Not to mention the MILLIONS of Iraqi refugees who now live in other countries because of "Operation Enduring Iraqi Freedom" or whatever they called it. - SwissCamel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3They aren't fashionable Americans that's why. - Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16I think "blot" might be too weak a term, actually...
- Netrilix, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4I believe Bush put it best when he said that the Iraq War will be looked at as "just a comma" by historians in the future. So really, quite a bit less than a blot.
And thank you Jon Stewart for running with that one, as you always do. :-D - fredrated, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Bush prays to God it will be "just a comma" because otherwise his place is that of a reeking pile of feces; I go with the feces.
- lutefiski, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8No, the situation in Iraq is an ocean of blood, not just a blot on your history.
- smartass007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4maybe the people don't really want a unified iraq? maybe the sunnis, shia and kurds really don't want to share power and sovereignty? iraq's borders were created by the british anyway...maybe the iraqis need to redraw their own borders between themselves.
are there any iraqi diggers out there with an opinion on this?- Qenton, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Yes... they way it works is the Sunnis would draw the entire border of Iraq, thats what they want.
The Shia would draw the entire border of Iraq, thats what they want.
And the Kurds, well they would probably be happy with just the top part of Iraq including a few areas where the some of the Shia and Sunnis are.
And anyone who is smart enough to see that making three states won't ever work will just get out and go someplace else in the world where they don't have a bunch of squabbling tribes trying to get the upper hand for the last 4000 years.
- Qenton, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Yes... they way it works is the Sunnis would draw the entire border of Iraq, thats what they want.

- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7You must really miss the days before 70% of the public realized Bush couldn't form a coherent policy on what to have for lunch, much less what to do in the Middle East.
- geoboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Why do I need a tin foil hat to hate Bush? It's plenty easy to do that without one.
- Calann, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7It was the Bush administration that got us into this mess and it's very clear that they have no clue how to get us out. They set up the Iraq Study Group and then ignored them when they didn't like the results.
We need new leadership in Washington. Things are so bad in Iraq that this new leadership might not be able to solve it, but it is obvious that the current administration is only making things worse and worse. - UrbanVoyeur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"It can be argued that Iraq is on the verge of being a failed state.."
What exactly is the definition of a failed state? How bad does it have to get?- salinemist, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6California?
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Hey, it takes American know-how to build a verge that lasts THIS long! Show some respect!
- skyfire1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+760 killed? God that's horrible.
- dzorz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7You might want to look up Peter Galbraith's (the former US ambassador in Croatia) book called "The End of Iraq: How American Incompetence Created a War Without End".
By comparing Iraq to former Yugoslavia he concluded that Iraq should be split up in 3 states:
- Kurdistan
- Shiite state
- Sunnite state
The *major* difference between ex-Yugoslavia and Iraq is that Yugoslavia was a federation of 6 republics. In Iraq only Kurdistan would have clear borders, but Shiites and Sunnis are mixed up just like Muslims, Serbs and Croatians are in Bosnia. His solution would require *major* ethnic cleansing / "peaceful" removal (Volksdeutsche exodus anyone?) for Shiite-Sunni part, but Kurds are (arguably) already running a separate state...- salinemist, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6The problem is Islam. If they're not killing the infidels they're killing each other; the state of their religion is analogous to Christianity in the middle ages.
- nycmac247, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16
when will people admit that we were _better off_ with Saddam there?
that is the day people will really understand the extent of the damage we have done- liv3fr33ordi3, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1You're a ***** moron. There was just as much killing when Saddam was in power. You just didn't hear about it because there were less journalists in Iraq back then.

- hcl40u, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13And the chemical weapons he used were provided by the US, how nice of Saddam.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@wintermd: Actually, the Kurds had it great under the no-fly zone. Turkey left them alone, Saddam couldn't touch them, and for once in their history, they weren't screwing or being screwed by other Kurdish factions. The PKK is going to louse things up for them soon enough, and Bush will have to pick between supporting the Kurds (and, by proxy, the terrorism of the PKK) or the Turks (who want to wipe out the most stable and democratic part of Iraq, Kurdistan).
- rockinjoe, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0Are you for real?T The man was a murdering torturing rapist who spawned two other murdering, torturing rapists. He had to be put down along with his ***** family. I don't like the situation we're in over there, but to say that Iraq was better off with Saddam in power is ludicrous.
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Do some research, Sadam's did a lot for Iraq.

If they ever are, I'll put my money where my mouth is and make a $100 donation to whomever is the Democrat front runner.
- Leviathan777, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Look, just cause you're scared ***** to live in NYC and scared ***** to set foot in Baghdad doesn't mean they resemble each other, you ***** hayseed.
In NYC, or indeed, even in the American cities with really bad murder rates, your chance of being murdered isn't that great unless you are cheating your bookie, smoking up the last of the crack with your drug buddies, or fighting for drug dealing turf.
In Baghdad, your offense is just having the wrong name. Your offense is being a woman and daring to be out of doors. Your offense is not belonging to a militia and having something worth stealing. Or working for the government. Or the police. Or the army - unless you are in one of those units that's really just the day job for the militia (we train them by day, they shoot us at night). And in Baghdad, they don't just get killed, they get drill holes all over their bodies, they get burned with cigarettes and have their eyes plucked out, they get shot execution style, and dumped in the middle of the street. And if you go to collect the body from the morgue, they'll ***** kill you too. And in Baghdad, more people are murdered every 10 days than there are in NYC all year.
Take your tired wingut talking point and shove it up your ass. - SuckItUp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Leviathan777 Gee another pawn of Soros and friends... what a surprise.

- weblockr, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Get out of IRAQ and Muslims will control themselves... USA is not the world's police, USA don't control the crime in their country and crimes there are at a very high rate compared to middle eastern countries... so just get out of there.
- bubbadoo989, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Dear GW:
you have succeeded in:
1. destabilizing an entire nation
2. spending billions upon billions (it will cost $90 billion to keep troop levels up for just three months) on the liberation of a country that doesn't want liberation
3. making a mockery of the US Constitution
4. making the US an international joke
And now you say you're anxious to sign an immigration bill that all but opens the borders...
Please stop the madness and resign.
Thank you.

- mlarsen, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Ok, for over 2 years we have been hearing the "Bring of civil war" drum beat over and over and over. Why does everyone want us to fail so bad? The media needs to realise that they can try to change reality by reporting what they wish would happen, but when it doesn't it make them less and less credible. I rarely believe what the media says about the war at all. I prefer to actually talk to returning soldiers and get their opinions, and they tend to be very different from the medias. Just my $.02
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I don't know. Why did Bush and his cronies want us to fail so bad? Not only was sending only 200k troops to secure an entire country a stupid idea, but sending in contractors to whom "corruption" was part of their mission statement was a stupid idea of an order so high that it should be isolated and studied for use as a weapon.
Nobody here wants America to "fail." A lot of us saw this war as a dumb idea that was doomed from the start, and it's only now that the people behind it are starting to wake up to that reality.

(for those lacking in ability to see sarcasm for what it is, the afore mentioned surprise at the referenced statement about the failure of Iraq is just that, sarcasm. To be even more clear on the issue, the first sixteen(16) words of this comment are sarcasm. Thank you, that is all.) - lopla, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well look at it this way. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Are we (as a whole world) ready to say that the War in Iraq failed? I'm not calling it a mistake, I'm just saying that it was terribly handled. It's a lost cause, we might as well just leave now.
