- Alfdog, on 10/12/2007, -9/+48I think that they're actually Mexican internet tubes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35@Ulisses:
They are illegal aliens. They are not Americans. They have no right to work in the U.S. They have no right to enter the U.S. They are entering the U.S. illegally. They need to leave and go back to whatever country they are from.
What part of that do you not understand, dumbass?
Try to sneaking in to Mexico illegally, try to get a job, and demand welfare without speaking spanish. After you are arrested, convicted of a felony, and have spent your time in a Mexican prison, then come talk to me. - TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28If we build a 40 ft wall they'll build a 41 foot ladder.
Now if we really want to solve this, what we really need is a moat. A moat with crocodiles. - inurb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26"All we need to do is to fine the snot out of people who employ ILLEGALs. When the jobs dry up they will go home of their own accord"
That's actually not that bad of an idea. - ohearn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24@Ulisses: I don't think he was being a bigot at all. He never said that legal aliens need to leave, just that we have a problem with illegal aliens in this country. Guess what he's right, we do. I can't speak for Danno, but for me I have no problem with people wanting to come here looking for a better life, I just want them to obey the immigration laws and come here legally. Since the parent post seems to agree with that view point, I think you need to quit being an ass.
- DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Can someone explain to me how wanting to stop illegal immigration is being a bigot?
I am all for the "Give me your tired, your poor, your weak.", but there is a process to it. It does not matter what country you are coming from, there is a legal way to do it. I cannot imagine why anyone would be in favor of allowing people to enter the country illegally. Since when was any sovereign nation not allowed to protect its borders? If you want to talk about changing immigration law, then thats fine, debate that all you want. Is anyone here aware of how tough Mexico's illegal immigration policy is? If you enter into Mexico illegally, you are handled in a very harsh manner. You will spend time in a Mexican jail before being deported. Most people on both sides of the argument just demonize the other side on this issue. People who are ok witlh illegal immigration call those that want to stop illegal immigration bigots. People who want to stop illegal immigration call those that are ok with it terrorist supporters. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23@dedeSwiss:
Tell that to the American citizens and legal immigrants who lined up for the jobs that became available when ICE raided the meat packing plants in Nebraska.
Jobs those same people couldn't get because the jobs were held by illegal aliens. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+39All we need to do is to fine the snot out of people who employ ILLEGALs. When the jobs dry up they will go home of their own accord.
Mexico, a major contributor to the ILLEGAL Alien Invasion, refuses to help its people. Someone should suggest to them that they would be better off if Mexico became part of the U.S. as that is true. - edstate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18You couldn't be more right... I consider myself a very middle-of-the-road guy, and legal immigrants are some of the best "Americans" we have... but on this one I just want the laws to be enforced. If it were 13 million caucasian Canadians or Brits sneaking in here, I'd feel the exact same way.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+25why not build a huge wall, oh wait china tried that.
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@Ulysses,
Just because a lot of people have circular reasoning with respect to illegal aliens doesn't mean there isn't a good reason why they are illegal. The US has quotas on how many people can come into the US from every country on the planet. The purpose of this is to limit shock to our economy and our culture caused by large numbers of immigrants. Illegal immigrants are line jumpers, they're jumping ahead of everyone else who it waiting to legally enter the country.
Imagine how many people would come here if we had no restrictions at all. It would soon become unmanageable and the US would soon become something not-US. Eventually one of the incoming groups would gain dominance, and then they would clamp down on further immigration to maintain their own culture throughout the land.
When the German State expanded into the rest of Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, they were only looking for Lebensraum, room to live, a better life. Imagine if 1.3 billion Chinese decided they wanted a better life in the US. If we had no restrictions on immigration, even just the number of Chinese to the right of the decimal point could double the population of the US.
Most people haven't really thought it all out, so they just parrot the "it's illegal because it's illegal" thing. But there's a good reason why it's illegal, and it's important for the US to enforce quotas out of respect for all those who abide by US laws. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Yeah, but it will still be against the law for you to own waterfront property. And, you had better learn Spanish. Oh, and do it legally, because illegal immigration is a felony in Mexico.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Maybe they should do something about the crime and corruption in their own countries instead of bringing it here. They don't have to come here. They don't have to break U.S. law. They choose to do it.
Also, these tunnels are used for drug smuggling. Sounds like a good way to stop that to me. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@oiarbovnb:
Mexico is a Democracy. The Mexican people are responsible for the Mexican government. They elect and re-elect corrupt politicians. They do nothing about the corrupt police. They do nothing about the bribery. They do nothing about their schools. They do not organize for better wages. They do not innovate.
See the thing with a Democracy is that it is the citizens' fault if the government sucks. - mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"Among the unfilled tunnels, created to ferry people and drugs, is the longest one yet found — extending nearly half a mile from San Diego to Tijuana."
"Mexican authorities have told their U.S. counterparts that they've filled their end of the tunnels. But U.S. officials express doubt, citing the high costs and examples of tunnels being compromised."
"Express doubt"? Why doesn't someone go and walk the length of the tunnel? The longest is only a half mile long!
And maybe they should use that expanding foam to fill the tunnels. Have fun cutting through a half mile of that stuff. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Why fill in the tunnels? Sounds to me like a perfect opportunity for law enforcement to catch drug traffickers.
Just put some motion sensors on the Mexico-end of the tunnels, and by the time they reach the US, the Feds are already waiting for them.
@avalenci
Just because the Mexican government says that they capped the tunnels on their end means that they did or that they did it right. The Mexican government encourages illegal immigration. One of the biggest sources of cash flowing into Mexico is from immigrant workers in the US sending money back home. - baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12when all the mexicans move up here i am moving down to mexico and have the whole place to myself...
- Phearce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9O.K. Filling the tunnels is really costly. So why even bother? Why not dig a trench along the border, lay a modestly thick concrete wall -- 12 inches should do -- and embed sensors in it. Try and go through it, sensors go off. Try to go under it, sensors detect digging activity and alert authorities. Kinda an underground fence.
- Palmetto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Yeah, I heard that the problem was that it costs too much money to fill in the tunnels.. How much do explosives cost?
I say, pull all 120,000+ troops from Iraq and put them to use deporting the Illegals from this country. At the same time, ratify a constitutional amendment against naturalization (kids born to illegals aren't citizens). Next, build a wall. - sendakseuss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think the financially smart thing to do would be to use the tunnels for something we need, like say, a sewer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8All i can say is that the illegals are lucky we have put up with thier ***** for so long. Most countries with this bad of a problem would have already had shoot on site orders.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Danno hit the nail on the head. I am very upset about the problem of illegal immigration, but I don't blame the illegal immigrants themselves. If I were in their situation, I'd probably do the same thing.
To me, the blame falls on the companies that use illegal labor because it can save them a buck, the US lawmakers that refuse to take them on, and the Mexican government that can't get its own house in order.
and to DedeSwiss - the myth of "illegals doing jobs Americans won't do" is just that, a MYTH. I've been a dishwasher, I've worked on farms, I've cleaned hotel rooms. The only difference is, I was protected by minimum wage laws and labor laws. - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@DannoJyD - I agree with you except for the part about Mexico becoming part of the US. MEXICO would be better off, the US would be much much worse. The illegals are already trying to turn Mesa, AZ (suburb of Phoenix, just north of me) into a little Mexico. They want to bring Mexico here with all of its problems. I have no problem if someone comes to the US legally and wants to bring their culture with them. What I do have a problem with is them coming in illegally and trying to turn my country into theirs. If you love the life in Mexico that much, go back to it, don't bring it here. What they want is the ability to go to a hospital when they get sick or injured and then not have to pay for it. They also want to be able to do what ever they want without repercussions because that's how it is in Mexico. Sorry, that's not how it works here.
- avalenci, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Have you read the article, It seems more a problem of bureaucracy in the US side. In the article says that Mexico claims that the tunnels are closed in its side. And in the US "Because of overlapping jurisdictions among federal border agencies, the responsibility for subterranean work was unclear for years.".
And yes, this is about the known tunnels. - repins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9sounds like a good place to store toxic and nuclear waste.
- ohearn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Because technically once you cross the point in the tunnel that lines up with the border, they can't do anything to it. That doesn't mean we can't just throw a stick of dynomite or two down the tunnels to collapse them however.
- sdsurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Ulisses: The 'bigot' argument is so tired, and is the usual mantra of the misguided liberal. Let's see who is the 'dumbass' here? Allow me to clue you in on something: protecting one's borders is NOT racist, draconian, bigoted, [insert your talking point catchphrase of the day here]. It is simply prudent security. The United States, like Mexico, is a sovereign nation that not only has a right to protect its borders from ALL invaders (and that's what people who sneak under the border in tunnels are), regardless of where they are from. (FYI... if you think you've seen draconian, check out the hypocrisy with which the Mexican gov't secures it's own Southern border with Guatemala - very amusing and certainly not well publicized in the mainstream media)
The Minutemen, for example, are not racists - the race card is just something liberals like to throw out because it instantly shuts down the debate and allows them to fly in the face of logic. People who want our government to control our borders don't want ANYONE coming here by illegal means, not just Mexicans. The fact that we share a border with Mexico obviously makes it highly likely that the majority of people coming across our Southern border illegally are of Mexican heritage. I don't particularly care - I just don't want any illegals here. Period. There is a system by which one can come to this country legally. Use it.
Until the laws change (which they will, if the current 'open-borders' administration has any say in it), calling someone who is here in this country illegally an 'undocumented migrant' is about as ludicrous as calling a bank robber someone who makes 'undocumented withdrawals'. The 'immigrant rights activists' (they always seem to drop the 'illegal' part) are always spouting about how, 'These are honest people who are just here to make a living - they obey the law and simply work'. I'm sorry, but am I the only one who realizes just how idiotic that sounds? The very nature of their being here illegally dictates that they are, in fact, NOT honest, law-abiding people from the get-go. And if you need further proof, check out the results of a recent Justice Dept report that states that the AVERAGE illegal alien in the US today has been arrested SIX TIMES. Law-abiding folks, my ass. Where I come from, that's called a career criminal.
Until there is not a single unemployed US Citizen that is willing to work remaining in this country, we have absolutely zero need for a guest worker program, thank you very little. Go ahead, let the moronic 'racist' commentary fly. It only makes my argument for me. - jasper976, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8sure thing rambo
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here's an idea:
Tunnels == instant landfile site! Just pack it with garbage or trash. - repins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Unless you are an immigrant, even a legal immigrant to Mexico cannot vote or own land you are stuck with the Government the native Mexicans give you.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13put landmines in the tunnels, that will stop 'em
- BassJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I do feel sorry for you americans with these tunnels, at least over here in the UK we only have one tunnel that all the illegal immigraintsget in by - the channel tunnel!
- HappyMax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6We got a problem with all the landfills being full and we're always trying to find places to dump our trash. Just fill up the tunnels with garbage.
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@sfacets
No one asked you to come and read this article. You could have easily scrolled on by & not have commented.
And as for the story being on Digg: some of us actually don't mind reading news stories about something other than technology every once and awhile. - edstate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Can we please do any LESS to prevent illegal entry into this country? Jeesh.
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Charlotte_Web
I was thinking along the same lines. They could easily setup low cost traps (a couple motion sensors?) that could inform the local border patrol. Within minutes, the border patrol could have the end of the tunnel gaurded, waiting for the trafficers (human + drug alike). - joe122370, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely.
Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors.
I've done all the things you don't like to do.
I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters:
* You are Required to let me stay in your house
* You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
* You are Required to Educate my kids
* You are Required to Provide other benefits to me and to my family
* (my husband will do all of your yard work because he is also hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part).
* If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my RIGHT to be there.
* It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself.
* I'm a hard-working and honest, person, except for well, you know, I did break into your house.
* And what a deal it is for me!!!
* I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of cold, uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and bigoted behavior.
* Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can communicate with me.
Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America ...if you agree, pass it on (in English). Share it if you see the value of it.
If not blow it off......... along with your future Social Security funds, and a lot of other things. - Hockey37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Call Bill Murray and tell him there's gophers in the tunnels.

"Though concrete plugs usually close off the tunnels where they cross under the border and at main entrance and exit points, the areas in between remain largely intact."
The reason they don't "walk the length of the tunnel" is that there is a big concrete wall where it crosses the border. Try reading the whole article next time. That or take a reading comprehension class. - BuddyDoQ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8@dedeSwiss
