50 People Looking for Virgin Mary in the Sun Go Blind
dnaindia.com — At least 50 people in Kottayam district have reportedly lost their vision after gazing at the sun looking for an image of Virgin Mary. Though alarmed health authorities have installed a signboard to counter the rumor that a solar image of Virgin Mary appeared to the believers, curious onlookers, including foreign travelers, have been thronging...

You can not force someone to believe. You may push them to say it or even doubt things. You may put ideas in their head and make it easy to follow them. But you can never force their mind to accept it.
You people brainwash yourselves with your anti-religious bias.- altf13, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5So to sum up: brainwashing does not work/exist, yet the anit-religious are brainwashing themselves with information they don't believe in?

So let me get this straight, they put up a sign that said "Do not look into the sun! There is not an image of the virgin mary in the sun. Nope, definitely no virgin mary in the sun." And now they are surprised people are looking for virgin mary in the sun? - dwcharn, on 03/10/2008, -3/+2They might have let their religious beliefs overtake logical thinking, but one thing is for sure... they sure didn't half-ass stupidity. - tyywebb, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I'm pretty sure you can't see anything the _instant_ you look towards the sun. It's only after you look away and realize your vision isn't returning that it would dawn on you that you have just made a huge mistake.

- captainboog, on 03/10/2008, -5/+3actually, there are people around the world, but especially in india, who stare at the sun for long periods of time. There is a yogic trick to it. If you just start staring at it, chances are you're going to go blind. But if you learn the methods, well, some people do it. I, myself, have stared at the sun quite a bit, but only for a little bit at a time. I ramped up the time too fast though and quit when I started having vision problems.
There is a guy, an Indian guy, who has been tested by a few institutions (schools and hospitals), who has been shown to get his sustenance from staring at the sun for about an hour a day. It's not made up *****, this really happens. But again, it is definitely a yoga. Ie. a power that one has to develop.- norman619, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2The first step along the fath to star staring is to pull my finger.

And don't give me this "It's not them....it's religion. It has corrupted their minds" crap, because anyone with half a brain would be able to use critical thinking and realize that looking at the sun is just ***** ridiculous.

- metapop, on 03/10/2008, -22/+10this happened in india- the place where they don't kill/eat cows because they're holy, resulting in huge piles of ***** on the street, rampant disease, and hunger. this story probably isn't the most incriminating strike against religion in india, considering their entire way of life is based around blatantly terrible beliefs. if you want to pick on a destructive religion, hinduism is far worse than even the worst examples of christianity.

- carpespasm, on 03/10/2008, -0/+11-- The Thirty Years' War produced the largest religious death toll of
all time. It began in 1618 when Protestant leaders threw two Catholic emissaries out of a Prague
window into a dung heap. War flared between Catholic and Protestant princedoms, drawing in supportive religious
armies from Germany, Spain, England, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, France and Italy. Sweden's Protestant
soldiers sang Martin Luther's "Ein 'Feste Burg" in battle. Three decades of combat turned central Europe into a
wasteland of misery. One estimate states that Germany's population dropped from 18 million to 4 million.
In the end nothing was settled, and too few people remained to rebuild cities, plant fields, or conduct education.
(Death Toll: 14 Million)- DonTazeMeBro, on 03/10/2008, -2/+2Stalin starved 7 million Ukranians in 1932 by taking their farmland and putting them on Siberian gulags. Then add the the concentration camps after WWII that killed millions of Christians.
- talonstriker, on 03/10/2008, -1/+8Actually, that would be the best way to "find" the VM. When you stare at things for a long time, your eyes /mind goes batty and you start seeing things. I can't imagine the things you'll be able to see if you're staring at the sun.
- jankind, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6It's a schooner!
- Frejesal, on 03/10/2008, -19/+2Haha you dumbass. XD
First of all this isn't a religious belief, because if you actually bothered to read or even skim the article before spewing anti-religion garbage you'd see that the church disowned the miracle, and the whole miracle was a RUMOR.
Buried, you and the article.- Kronos6948, on 03/10/2008, -2/+15Just because the Church denied it doesn't take away the fact that the BELIEVERS were dumb enough to do it anyway.
- Frejesal, on 03/10/2008, -9/+1So wait, now random people who are part of a faith determine that faith's beliefs?
You might want to work on your simple reasoning skills.

- alienunknown, on 03/10/2008, -2/+9oh yes and what the church teaches is highly intelligent!
There is only one TRUE god, and that is the FSM - frazw, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4I'm pretty sure those religious people in the article believed it enough to damage their eyesight. To my mind that makes it a religious belief.
The Church does not own all religion and religious beliefs.

lolwut? We used to say that? - drjones78, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6Look into events of Medjugorje. Supposedly the virgin mary has been appearing there for years, and catholics and christians make pilgrimages there to hopefully see "miracles".
Many of them say one of the things that happens is that they are able to stare at the sun and "watch it dance", and not suffer any eye damage. Its commonly believed to be true by many a christian, and they flock to this town in droves to actually do it. Meanwhile, the poor war torn town rakes in the tourist dollars.
Idiots. - OrangeTide, on 03/10/2008, -2/+6It's not really religion, it's the crazy superstitions around Mary that some Catholics have.
- frazw, on 03/10/2008, -1/+10Um crazy superstitions are not religion? Ok, news to me.
- PxCxG, on 03/10/2008, -7/+1To be fair, I'm sure many people over the years have gone blind from looking at the sun in the name of astronomy.
- Waterrat, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6 No they don't,cause they have special filters to protect their vision.
- PxCxG, on 03/10/2008, -4/+1Thanks for that nugget of wisdom, sherlock. Obviously I'm not saying *all* astronomers have gone blind. Remember, "special filters" are relatively new innovations to the field of astronomy.
- frazw, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4I seriously doubt that someone educated enough to have been an astronomer would know better than to look at the sun.
Even the Astrologers of old were highly educated people and probably wouldn't.
Unless of course you consider the village idiot who stared at the sun to study it an astronomer. I know I don't. - fmaxwell, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2No, PxCxG. they are not "relatively new innovations." The use of filters for observing the sun was described by Petrus Apianus in the 'Astronomicum Caesareum' of 1540. Galileo used them in the early 1600s. I don't consider something used by Galileo as a "relatively new [innovation] to the field of astronomy."

- captainboog, on 03/10/2008, -8/+2keyword: sun gazing
people do this and don't go blind. you just have to pace yourself so that you build up a tolerance and "skill" for it. personally, i've probably stared at the sun for a total of an hour or two, spread out over a month. i still have near perfect vision. i went too fast though and had to quit, so my eyes would heal.- jparkinson, on 03/11/2008, -0/+7If i could, I would give your eyes to a blind person (preferably not one whose blindness was caused by pure stupidity like the people in the article) because you are clearly stupid and don't deserve them.

- jesuswuzanalien, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2You've obviously never met a Catholic before...
- jim1977, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2Before you get too scornful, remember that right here in the west we have to be reminded not to stare at the sun every single time there's an eclipse or any other type of solar event. The warnings turn up everywhere from papers to kids' TV shows where they show you how to make a 'solar viewer' - which is usually a pinhole in thick card - to news reports and morning TV talking about blinded kids and their families.
In short: shut up, you dense bastard.
- theYevvin, on 03/10/2008, -23/+3Yeah..staring at a bright light looking for a deity...what a silly idea.
- metapop, on 03/10/2008, -3/+153i was in india several years back, and saw an english newspaper- one of the articles talked about a hindu ritual involving a very large statue surrounded by scaffolding so that followers could climb to its head several stories high and pour milk on its head. after multiple dousings of milk on the statue's head, milk flooded the area and electrocuted several people standing in line who were near floodlights. everyone thought the god was angry, jumped off the scaffolding and stampeded out of the temple, trampling many other people. i still don't really know what to think about that- whether to feel sorry for them, or to think they deserve the lies they've accepted as truth... the newspaper itself supported the angle that the god had something to do with its followers' deaths.
- postitnote, on 03/10/2008, -1/+60Remember when Ned Flanders had a statue of Maude and people thought they saw heaven when they were in front of it? And remember how it was all due to a gas leak?

- Otto, on 03/10/2008, -4/+17Not murdering people is a matter of self-preservation instinct. You don't need to have religion to know that it might not be a great idea.

- Chassit, on 03/10/2008, -3/+12Except, history shows that if any religion is guilty of murder it is the Catholic one!
- lewscroo, on 03/10/2008, -3/+4The murder thing may be legitimate if it was actually followed but the murder thing isn't exactly crystal clear in the bible. The bible is full of instances of murder for many reasons (adultery, conquering other people, etc, and not counting what god even does as murder) and since its printing murdering in its name is pretty common (And Im not saying there aren't plenty of other reasons or religions that people murder for)
- PixelMagic, on 03/10/2008, -8/+3Yes there is. Butt sex with little boys. Duh.
- computrius, on 03/10/2008, -3/+2"but the murder thing isn't exactly crystal clear in the bible".
It says "thou shalt not kill".. how exactly is that not crystal clear? Seems pretty damn clear to me.. lol- Nevarius, on 03/10/2008, -1/+4Seems clear but there is exceptions made that make it a bit unclear. Plus add on wishful thinking of some people that use the bible to justify anything. Sit back and watch as insanity ensues.
- Vindexus, on 03/10/2008, -1/+5It also says to kill people.
- Otto, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1You know, even though god said "thou shalt not kill", when you actually read the rest of bible, god seems to be the leading cause of death. I mean, when you have him making bears eat children for making fun of a bald guy, then I kinda gotta wonder how committed god is to the whole commandment thing.
- tacroy, on 03/10/2008, -15/+7What about the rule to not murder people? Illegitimate? Or are you just being a sheep and hating things cause its cool to? I'm not a fan of catholicism, the bad definitely out weighs the good, but seems ignorant to claim that nothing it offers is good.
- alienunknown, on 03/10/2008, -3/+9Your right. Only murder, prejudice and hatred are legitimate aspects of the catholic religion.
- Ghiren, on 03/10/2008, -2/+4Staring at the sun? no... Searching for a Jewish woman who gave birth to a fatherless man then was raised to demi-goddess status (kinda strange for a fiercely monotheistic religion) in the hopes of an insanely unlikely event working in their favor (i.e. a "miracle")? Yeah... I think ImmortalAzrael got it right. Searching for that woman/demi-goddess in the sun was just the stupidity of people compounding the problem.
- Waterrat, on 03/10/2008, -1/+4 No,under normal circumstances,a person would never stare at the sun.but their religious fantasy's
caused them to do this.
- Waterrat, on 03/10/2008, -1/+4 No,under normal circumstances,a person would never stare at the sun.but their religious fantasy's
- one1plus1one, on 03/10/2008, -3/+2If your only experience with Catholicism is of the "perverted priest" kind, then yes no one could blame you for feeling there is nothing legitimate about Catholicism.
But the priests I have known have all done tremendous and great things in the community -- I can't even describe how much of themselves they have given to helping others, including how they helped abused single Mothers seeking refuge from violent husbands, drug addicts who wanted to turn their life around etc...
I have also had what I could only describe as very intense spiritual and sacred moments in Catholicism, including one very intense moment in confession when I felt the weight the of world lifted my shoulders.
Confession is often portrayed in movies for comedic purposes, or to stereotype priesthood as in the "perverted priest" motif. But it is nothing like that in real life. At least not for me.- Gunegune, on 03/10/2008, -2/+1While on the subject of confession in Hollywood movies, one of the best examples of a real confession I've ever seen would have to be in "The Godfather III".
- Otto, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Doing lots of good deeds does not make up for doing bad deeds as well. I mean, what if somebody was a good family man, went to church every day, helped out in the community, but then also killed somebody? Or maybe not killed somebody, but just did something to them that was pretty darned evil? Would you let him off because he's a good guy?
Brainwashing people into believing in fairy tales about heaven and hell and saints and sinners and angels and demons... I do not consider this to be forgivable just because "he's a good guy". When you do bad things, then you are a bad person. Priests are bad people. All of them. Look, they may mean well, but what you intend to do really doesn't count when you're still doing bad things.
- DarkSamus, on 03/10/2008, -9/+53however, staring straight into a priest's ***** is

- Sinistocrat, on 03/10/2008, -0/+8I think many people are overlooking the fact that tourists now visit the site specifically to discover this miracle. As if from that particular location, the sun looks different than from anywhere else. I find this potentially more retarded than actually staring into the sun.
- Jpotts12, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0This just goes to show that even silly little superstitions can be harmful.
- tacroy, on 03/10/2008, -14/+31Stupidity of PEOPLE strike again. I seriously doubt "staring at the sun" is a legitimate aspect of catholic religion.

Oh that's right, you're just talking out of your ass again. - Edrick, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3If the child was raised to believe orthodox Marxism was the ONLY legitimate ideology and encouraged to believe it dogmatically, then yes, it would be indoctrination.
- commernie, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5@Edrick
While mostly I agree with you, I have to say that, even then, it's not the same as religious indoctrination. Political ideologies can be questioned and one can attempt to prove them wrong or invalid. This is not true of religion, which is why it is so dangerous. - andrew1193, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1"What deity is involved there?"
To paraphrase R.J. Rummel, communism has a priesthood, holy books, its view of heaven and hell, its religious certitude, and the faith of its adherents.

Yeah.. Christianity is the only one where people did stupid things..
Just because someone who calls them self a christian goes out and shoots someone, or brings their country to war in the name of god doesn't mean that murder is ok and that person represents all of Christianity. Just like suicide bombing, and burning oneself alive doesn't represent all Muslims or Hindus
