4 swimmers dead, 3 missing in N.Y. ocean waters

news.yahoo.com — Four swimmers drowned and three were missing Saturday in two days of treacherous ocean currents at Long Island and New York City beaches, authorities said. At least three more had been rescued.

  • zadadka, on 07/27/2008, -0/+6Reading the article, it seems that these waters can be frequently treacherous.
    Why aren't breakwaters built if this is a high risk?
    If breakwaters are unrealistic, how about floating "shark nets" that those caught in a surge can cling to?
    Easy for me to say from 5000 miles away, I agree, but it seems odd that this sad and needless loss of life is "allowed" on an ongoing basis.
