- browwiw, on 04/09/2009, -4/+27An armed society is polite. An unarmed society with only armed deranged individuals is a shooting gallery.
If this individual hadn't had access to a gun then he would have just used an axe or knife. Would you register or ban all axes and knives, then? - Sloi, on 04/09/2009, -3/+24The frequency of shootings hasn't changed, they're just being reported more often. I'm thinking the mass media puppeteers are on a tight schedule and need to brainwash the masses so their gun control agenda passes without incident.
/tinfoil hat - HurricaneDC, on 04/09/2009, -3/+22What the hell is with the shootings
- MacEnvy, on 04/09/2009, -4/+22@Shiftgood
Your argument falls apart when you try to actually come up with a workable solution. I assure you, even something drastic like banning all gun sales wouldn't stop such things from happening.
Or do you think that criminals and sociopaths are such lawful citizens that they would refrain from using the black market? And if there's anything that the War on Drugs has shown, it's that if there's a demand for a good, there WILL be someone willing to supply, laws be damned.
I'm as liberal as they come, but the fact remains: criminals don't particularly care what laws you pass. Strict gun control only places limits on *law-abiding* citizens.
I believe that waiting periods are reasonable. I believe that the National Firearms Act of 1934 (which banned automatic weapons) is reasonable. However, the Assault Weapons Ban is a farce that bans guns based on how they look, and there's nothing wrong with semi-automatic weapons (self-loaders). Semi-autos are commonly used for hunting and sport shooting, and have nothing to do with machine guns, despite what many people apparently think. - diggduggjoe, on 04/09/2009, -2/+15Or, hammers. Some guy two blocks from my work was murdered by a co-worker with a hammer.
We need better hammer licensing.
All gun control does is make regular people jump through hoops. Every scumbag or nutjob will not abide with any of those laws. Gun control simply cannot succeed. - tyeddingston, on 04/09/2009, -2/+14That logic is just silly. I am in no way shape or form religious, and never intend to be. AND, I never intend on going on a killing spree. It doesn't take a massive fairy tale for me to have good, even decent judgment.
- zombie210, on 04/09/2009, -6/+17Yeah, just like the westborough baptist church with fred phelps
- spritom, on 04/09/2009, -4/+14Columbine?
Dillon and Klebold were trying to set off a firebomb, which would have likely resulted in many more murders that day.
Knives?
Like the 19 highjackers 7 1/2 years ago.
Officers?
Like Officer Tueller who proved in a court that a knife is every bit as deadly from an attacker 30 feet away than a firearm.
Another option?
Such as Australia where they're calling it a crime scene...173 dead...without firearms.
We can play this all day, but the plural of "anecdotes" is not "data" - EarlOfLade, on 04/09/2009, -1/+11Here is another one, the lady in Florida who first shot her son then herself at a gun range. Now they have released the audio tapes of her.
http://digg.com/world_news/Marie_Moore_audio_tapes ...
From the article:
"I'm so sorry," Marie Moore wrote in one note. "I had to send my son to heaven and myself to Hell."
"You have a gun, you can do it," she said God told her while she was in a mental hospital. "I have to die and go to hell so there can be a thousand years peace on Earth." - spritom, on 04/09/2009, -5/+14Uh...it's California. It's an unarmed society.
- yocouchdigga, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9he's not a troll, see his history. bask in its awesomeness.
- browwiw, on 04/09/2009, -2/+11The economy and the alarmist media. People who flip out and do this stuff tend to be individuals who are inflexible and react poorly to stress and disappointment. With so much actual and perceived stress coming at them from all directions they snap and attempt to punish those who symbolize their anxieties.
- angel.wardriver, on 04/08/2009, -5/+14Happy Easter to you too shooter jerk.
- diggduggjoe, on 04/09/2009, -2/+10I am sure you could kill just as many with your car, if you were so inclined.
The poor economy doesn't help and too many people are just plain stupid or unbalanced.
Plus, keep in mind that around 80 million gun owners didn't shoot at anybody today with any of their 200 million guns. - Sloi, on 04/09/2009, -4/+12Again, just being reported more often. The actual frequency hasn't changed much...
Check the stats :-) - spritom, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7I'm not aware of a rise in the data over previous years. In fact, homicides are quite a bit down from a decade+ ago. However, there is definitely increased reporting on the subject.
The news cycle has done it countless times before such as "black churches" burning in the South. The same amount of churches have caught fire before and after the news cycle, but during that time, it seemed like everybody was reporting it. El Nino is another example as it still occurs, but it only caught major attention for a short while.
If the news cycle focused on automobile accidents and did each one as a major story, that would be 135 major stories a day. Of course, complete with a fancy logo-graphic of some sort. - PhillyMJS, on 04/09/2009, -3/+10The Crusades. The Holocaust. Centuries of strife in the middle east. 9/11. All brought to you by religion. Religion is a plague, not a beacon.
- HurricaneDC, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7he's a troll
- Kinsbane, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7Sounds like there should be an investigation on why someone who spent time in the nut house ended up with a firearm.
- GREEDOnvrFIRED, on 04/09/2009, -4/+10Are you refferring to the fact that there are so few lately that people resort to calling 4 gunshot wounds (1 wound belonging to the shooter) and one death a "mass shooting."
- hominidx, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6I'm so confused by your reply I don't know whether to Digg Up or Down!
*shoots everyone* - poesprogeny, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6I think we're talking about a legally armed society. Not sure Compton qualifies.
- Garlik, on 04/09/2009, -4/+9Wow, these comments really show how stupid some people are.

- diggduggjoe, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5If, we follow the data, we will find once drug crime and crimes of passion are eliminated guns are safer to society on whole than doctors, cars and even water.
I suggest ignoring crimes of passion for those usually are done anyway, with or without guns. Care for some OJ? - vault, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4The fact they're Korean is relevant in the same way it's relevant that they're elderly. It's just the story.
- mbm1512, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4cool you noticed a pattern. thats it. dont make any of us list a 1000 middle aged white serial killers that exist.
- DirtPile, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6I do.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I would prove I exist to the billions of people praying to me.

Im not for banning guns. Its a personal freedom, and im all for those. But to say that the world would be just as dangerous because someone could use a knife is just a ridiculous statement. Guns are disproportionately more powerful than any other hand held weapon on earth. Thats why they are the primary tool in wars... thats why you only run with your knife out in CS 1.6 and then pull out your AK when you get to the tunnel.
The way to lower gun violence is to shift our culture away from one that accepts guns, gun violence and usage as acceptable. Banning them certainly doesn't work because it doesn't make people want to use them any less.
The second half of that is to make people value what they have and where they are. This comes from things like a solid education, parenting support, media and architecture (I know that last one sounds crazy but its the power of context)
The plan would take roughly 15-25 years to see the results as a generation needs to be brought up in a culture that looks past gun use.
But if you really want to own one, you can. Im not here to take away your freedom. Just here to try and work with you for the betterment of our species. - joel8x, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4What the heck are you talking about??
- zyklon, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6I hate you so, so much.
- Shiftgood, on 04/09/2009, -9/+12I know you're getting buried. But its a great comment in that it holds a mirror up.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3copycat killings.
advice to media: stop giving these murderers attention and the top-news spots. Keep the coverage to a minimum and on a local level if possible. Don't show any photos of the goddam killer, and don't give a death count. This especially goes for television coverage. these "mass killings" are a self-perpetual machine, and the media keeps the cogs oiled up.
maybe these coward killers won't be so inspired to do this pathetic *****... - dododohead, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3im asian and i've realized this trend.
its probably politically incorrect, but politics isn't right anyways.
and its not just this incident.
in my area two asian kids already have been on random shooting sprees in the last 2 years, right next to vtech incident which was coincidentally by an asian kid.
it could be a whole *****, but the asian community needs to wake up. the bottom line is Asians don't tolerate or represent this behavior.
wack jobs are. - Chairboy, on 04/09/2009, -6/+9My only regret is that I have but one account to be downmodded-into-oblivion for.
- mhearne, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4If everyone over the age of 21 was required to be armed, there might be a few accidents, but the idiots, nutjobs and bad guys would be eliminated in about a month.
These shootings are all remarkably similar, and I am inclined to believe that some people just can't deal with the propaganda, mind control and especially the permanent crisis that has been going on since the Cold War. - Elranzer, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4"the Holocost and 9/11 were not caused by religion."
I think the Jews and Muslims would like a word with you. - spritom, on 04/09/2009, -3/+6I'm not aware of statistics rising, either in homicides in total or mass homicides. However, I would say that the news coverage cycle is definitely in full swing.
- saladdays, on 04/09/2009, -2/+5show them to me.
- andrewtheart, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Overwhelmingly though, the message of *modern* Christianity is peace. You can't really deny that. Christianity hasn't really led to any significant individual or group violence in recent years -- there are simply not enough inflammatory passages in the Bible to justify violent or disruptive behavior to a sane Christian. The number of passages that a layman thinks speak of a violent or bitter God is irrelevant -- in context of the entire message of the Gospels, a knowledgeable Christian knows violence is not the theme of their holy book. The only way a Christian could reasonably derive such a violent interpretation from the Bible is if they were to deliberately take passages out of context of the entire book and apply an overly literal lens to every passage (what your "reputable" website does). Non-religious laymen love doing this kind of stuff, but Biblical scholars have a counterargument to any example on that "reputable" website you posted, and Christians with a basic understanding of Jesus's message know that violence is not the answer.
The Quran, however, can't seem to say the same. There seem to be plenty of extremists using the Quran to justify themselves in ways they could never justify themselves if they picked up the Christian Bibie. - spritom, on 04/09/2009, -2/+5@saladdays
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=fbi+stats - Hillsfar, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2You can take this logically and remember that because it's so rare, it sticks in your mind. Historically it's mostly been Whites, Blacks, and Latinos when it comes to gun violence. Asian Americans only make up 3% of the U.S. population and we make up an even smaller percentage of the prison population (and a higher rate of wealth and education level attained).
Or you can take all this irrationally and keep in mind: never ***** with an Asian American or we'll get you back.
:-) - SPECOPS, on 04/09/2009, -6/+8Like it was said above, if there were no guns, a car would kill just as many people if used to do so. Shall we outlaw cars? Forks? hell lets just outlaw being within a mile of each other, that would fix it right?
