- Samurai77, on 11/07/2008, -5/+587Speaking as a former Marine, the D.I.'s don't have enough power to weed out those that should not be Marines.
I saw a lot of scumbags that should never have been Marines. This sickens me, and I feel for the families.
Semper Fi - Acrinimiril, on 11/07/2008, -21/+402I'm a Marine too. And I served on recruiting duty at one point.
Overall, I would say the major problem with recruiting quality Marines, is the United States getting involved in too many wars, policing the world, and nation building. This puts a huge strain on not only the military and recruiting overall, but the Marines themselves.
As a career Marine, the Marine Corps is your job and much of your life, yet if you don't meet your recruiting quotas every month, your career can be over. Most recruiters would rather work on getting waivers for recruits than risking their career.
Currently we have 700 military bases in 130 of the world's 190 countries. We have an additional 6,000 military bases within the United States and territories.
America needs to stop trying to be an empire. Our founding fathers advised us against this and the Constitution was designed to prohibit it. Unfortunately, most our representatives in Congress, including the President are ignoring the Constitution and getting us invovled in unconstitutional undeclared wars. - americanhelot, on 11/07/2008, -32/+381If these men were white, this would be a hate crime, and you would never stop hearing about it.
- Acrinimiril, on 11/07/2008, -101/+378Please be respectful.
Most the mainstream media is covering up the details of this story, which is bias and negligent journalism.
The people deserve to know the facts, thanks to Digg this is possible. - 4libertyy, on 11/07/2008, -2/+264This is a horrible crime. I hope that justice is served.
- PuterPrsn, on 11/07/2008, -7/+220I see most of the posts here blame the war, blame the marines, blame Bush. No one blames the participants of this horrendous crime. That, alone, should tell you the direction of the country - it's everyone's fault EXCEPT the perpetrators. Unbelievable.
People, these were adult men. There is NO excuse whatsoever, and no one to blame but themselves and their sick confederacy. A one-person crime could be an abberation. When four collude, it's premeditated evil. The whole point of being a civilized adult is that you can quell the inner ape and be reasonable, superceding your childhood and anything else. If not, you are not a thinking being.
Quit excusing bad behavior as "someone or something else caused this" - the four men, and they alone, are to blame. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -26/+177So tragic. According to the New York Daily News article (which unfortunately was submitted to digg with a headline that assigned blame to President Bush for the murders) both mothers dispute the investigator's claims that the motive for this crime was robbery. This was personal. My guess is they were mad their white sergeant had married one of their women.
http://digg.com/world_news/Four_Bush_Marines_tortu ... - platypusREX, on 11/07/2008, -32/+165Media blackout is always given to black on white crime.
- Necoras, on 11/07/2008, -19/+147Dude... they sexually assaulted one or both of them, tortured them, shot them execution style and torched the house. You really think that 4 black men just happened to find an interracial couple, who weren't wealthy, to rob and then decided to go overboard? That's kind of selective blindness.
- foxtrot3, on 11/07/2008, -37/+151This crime took place on Oct. 15th, yet we're just hearing about it now that the election is over. Think about it folks.
- sphira, on 11/07/2008, -8/+113"Please be respectful."
Always - the farther we move from that, the closer we move towards being like one of these United States Marine Privates. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -2/+96Yeah, we've been reading a lot about how the lowered standards means that gang members and other criminals have become a large minority in the military, not only endangering the soldiers and the nearby civilians, but also their neighborhoods when they get out -- having been trained in military tactics.
- rolf, on 11/07/2008, -9/+99FTA:
******************************
The couple's home was ransacked and jewelry and other items were taken. A fire was set, apparently in an effort to destroy evidence. The Camp Pendleton-based Marine sergeant and his wife were tortured before they were shot execution-style, according to a published report.
Investigators said they believe the motive was financial in nature.
******************************
Those two paragraphs are absolute contradictions. Motive was financial? Yet the shooting was execution style and they both were tortured, woman was sexually assaulted from what I gather?
That's a hate crime. - Disregard, on 11/07/2008, -7/+93Yep, there'd be six months of "Nazi Skinhead White racist Marines murder black hero sergeant and his loving white wife" specials on every other channel.
A racial motive would also be the default suspicion unless proven otherwise. Something that is reversed here. - mycutepetpics, on 11/07/2008, -5/+74Amen. They are playing a dangerous game and leading us down a very dangerous road. They have forgotten what everything our Constitution stands for.
This is so sad and my hearts and prayers go out to their families. - captainbethany, on 11/07/2008, -8/+72If it was simply a matter of financial motivation, don't you think they would have foregone the whole torturing the couple part?
Yeah, the title is taking it to the extreme, but read the whole article before screaming about THE FACTS. - PennFarmer, on 11/07/2008, -0/+61What you may not have heard is that gangs actively try to get their members to join for the very training you reference.
- lsatkins, on 11/07/2008, -11/+67So when whites do this to a blacks it's because they're racist but when blacks do it to whites it's for other reasons? Give me a ***** break. Black racists are just as bad as white ones. Yes blacks can be racist despite what some of them want you to believe.
- theNazz, on 11/07/2008, -41/+95"The Camp Pendleton-based Marine sergeant and his wife were tortured before they were shot execution-style, according to a published report."
Thanks for lowering the recruitment standards Bush Administration. You picked some real winners. - booyahbitch, on 11/07/2008, -3/+55Be they white or black, this was a horrible crime. There are bad people of every race, let's not forget that.
- cquinnd, on 11/07/2008, -2/+54If these men were civilians, it might be considered a hate crime; instead these men are enlisted soldiers, and subject to the more stringent uniform code of military justice, which can be even harsher in its assessment of such crimes.
- asaone, on 11/07/2008, -1/+52The Marine Corps and Army today are breading grounds for gang members, and the relaxation of educational and mental standards of recruits has been lowered way too far because of the desperate need for new troops. This is the sad tragic reality of what is getting into the Marine Corps and Army. The same thing happened during Nam. Under UCMJ as amended if they are convicted they are eligible for the firing squad and I support that. If a firing squad is to take place it needs to be open to the public and televised. Enough of this *****
- andburn1, on 11/07/2008, -86/+134THE FACTS? This is ridiculous; your title suggests two things of which I saw no evidence in the article: one, that the victim was in fact these four Marines' sergeant ("their sergeant"), and two, that the crime was motivated by the husband and wife being of different races ("interracial sergeant and wife"). Obviously he wasn't their sergeant; the article describes him as a veteran. In addition, the article suggests that the crime was "financially motivated," meaning that mentioning that the couple is inter-racial is completely unnecessary. This is another appalling instance of a digger sensationalizing a story that doesn't need it, and then bashing "mass-media" for covering it up.
- thecoolestguy, on 11/07/2008, -16/+64This is why Ron Paul was such a good candidate.
- cquinnd, on 11/07/2008, -6/+51And how many months passed before indication of what soldiers were doing at Abu Ghrahib prison started to surface?
Don't attribute to malice what seems consistent with standard military investigations. - PennFarmer, on 11/07/2008, -3/+48What's not a hate crime? I dislike that term as it is used mainly for thought police rather than actual crime. Agreed though that the method used suggests that there was a personal reason for the attack.
- Acrinimiril, on 11/07/2008, -5/+48Most withheld the publicly released photos in their articles.
This horrible crime happened last month, on October 15.
The local news story posted in this Digg is very rare, and was just published today.
Three weeks later. - psingl8715, on 11/07/2008, -2/+44Except for those individuals who are glad not to be in the USMC anymore. I once worked with the USMC as a contractor and I worked with a young marine in Iraq, training him with various Cisco devices and such. Well, instead of the commander allowing him to go back and help train the rest of his unit, they placed him on guard duty for a month or so. No biggie there I guess, it was probably his turn or something but he ended up being late once to his shift. The unit decided to take his rank, take his pay and keep him on guard duty for the rest of his tour in Iraq. The guy had a family back home that was having a hard time paying their bills and putting food on the table. It sounded a little harsh to me so I began asking around his unit to find out what really happened. Well, it turns out that the commander didn't really like this guy so he made an example out of him to keep other people from being late to their shift. He did as he was told and finished out his tour in Iraq and eventually ETS'd out of the Marine Corps. I helped get him a job with my company and he's been happy ever since. I'm almost certain if you'd ask him if he's still a Marine or a former Marine... well, he might just deny having ever been a marine and I for one, can't blame him.
- kemp34, on 11/07/2008, -4/+45The point is, straining the military to support empire makes it more likely that the military will accept turds in order to "make the quota". Clearly your belligerent response exposes your lack of insight.
- weeFred, on 11/07/2008, -0/+40andburn1 - "Obviously he wasn't their sergeant; the article describes him as a veteran."
If you bothered to read the linked article on nydaily.....
"Pietrzak was the suspects' sergeant at Camp Pendleton, Quiana's mother said Wednesday." - sphira, on 11/07/2008, -5/+44Agreed -
Unless thieves always select underpaid Marines that are trained to kill given the need and chance - as opposed to richer; easy pikins-
Surely personal, but not necessarily racial -
though if it were it would not surprise me a bit. - booksnmore4you, on 11/07/2008, -2/+39Regretfully dugg.
Sad, sad stuff. - foxtrot3, on 11/07/2008, -4/+40MSM not totally ignoring it. It was on the local TV news here in San Diego. It was also on Drudge.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -5/+39Agreed. If the military were used to serve its intended purpose -- protect the republic -- it wouldn't need to recruit gangstas and other low-lifes to fill the ranks. Using the military to protect a far-flung economic empire, on the other hand, requires so many soldiers that standards have to drastically be lowered.
Unfortunately, the R's and D's favor "democratic" imperialism and the smash-and-grab techniques of the Zionists. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -10/+41This was a HATE crime.
those marines really hated that guy and his wife.... - rolf, on 11/07/2008, -14/+42andburn1, shut up. The circumstance were clearly not financially motivated, the investigators are just being PC.
Here's another article to satisfy you:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/us_world/2008/11/0 ... - Acrinimiril, on 11/07/2008, -2/+29While this crime is terrible and must be addressed, you must understand the big picture and global causes.
The article also states, "Investigators said they believe the motive was financial in nature."
Either this is a cover up, or the truth. If it's true, you have to ask yourself why people would do this just to for some money?
Our country is $14 trillion dollars in debt, our Dollar has been inflated and devalued 96% to only 4 cents of it's original worth of $1. And this is perpetuated by maintaining a global empire around the world of over 6,700 military bases and invading other countries based upon lies and deceit.
To correct the local problems we must correct the cause.
We must do as our greatest Presidents did, and destroy the central banks controlling everything from the media and politicians to the wars we fight, once and for all. We have ignored the warnings of our country's greatest leaders in favor of the illusion of a quick buck. - Yazilliclick, on 11/07/2008, -1/+25You're only just hearing about it now if you're stupid enough to trust digg to be your only news source.
- vincebodie, on 11/07/2008, -3/+27Yeah, what Kemp said. Did you not notice that all of the parties to this story are/were Marines, as is the person who you replied to? Please try to show some compassion.
- rolf, on 11/07/2008, -3/+27Disgusting behavior. What a beautiful looking bride and handsome groom. What a tragic loss.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -4/+27With all due respect, I believe this is why there is an expression or two about taking care of your own problems before handling those of others. If the military has these kind of problems from within, that they haven't weeded out (these type of people), it's wrong to send the likes of such people into other countries to help them work out there problems, and shouldn't be done. I understand there are a lot of good marines out there and I've known a few, but with all the problems within the core, and the military itself, it's hard to respect an extension of the government that's so poorly managed. This shouldn't have happened, psychopaths can and must be rooted out. This is an outrageous consequence of trying to fill a recruiting quota...
- TheInformer, on 11/07/2008, -20/+43"Most the mainstream media is covering up the details of this story, which is bias and negligent journalism."
This is a surprise? After the largest and most obvious demonstration of media bias, during the election process, in the history of the United States? Please.
The media is no longer about objective journalism, critical thinking, and presenting just with facts without bias. It's about being cheerleaders and water carriers. It's all about subjective and not objective.
Finally, you're looking to Digg for facts? - empraptor, on 11/07/2008, -10/+33@Hecoras
We can try to guess at their motivation, but I think andburn1 is disputing the notion that the title was based on the contents of the article.
If the article does not state that the men were under the sergeant and it does not give us a motive except to say it may be financial in nature.
Four white men robbing, raping and murdering a black sergeant and his white wife would not automatically be equated with the men serving under him and doing the crime because they hate interracial couples. You'd hope, if you are reading title/description like the one OP wrote, that the article about such a story would reference military records, confession, expert opinion, or history/nature of the men ... any evidence at all really ... that points to such conclusions. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -5/+27And to think, Bush personally recruited these people and this problem is so huge that this is...erm...the first time in 8 years I've heard of it. Yeah, it's Bush's fault, again!
- pintomp3, on 11/07/2008, -4/+26i don't think people are excusing the four men, but trying to put things in context and trying to understand how four marines could do this to a fellow marine. when you lower your recruiting standards because of a war and start training thugs and criminals to fight, expect problem when you unleash them back into society.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -6/+28What's really sad is that by trying to cover up certain race crimes while at the same time hyping others, the media's bias perpetuates the very racism they claim to want to prevent, when simple honesty & straightforward journalism probably would not play into racists' hands. It seems clear in this case the motive probably wasn't financial, because the victims simply weren't paid all that much. That leaves other motives...
- sparsely, on 11/07/2008, -8/+30Make everything into a racial conflict?
Apparently so. - Notasheeple, on 11/07/2008, -1/+22Finally a soldier that gets it.
I wish there were more like you sir. - kemp34, on 11/07/2008, -8/+29Among a number of very solid reasons.
- blah247, on 11/07/2008, -0/+20While I was in the service under Clinton a couple Marines raped some underage girls in Japan. You want to blame Clinton for that?
