"Update at 7:44 p.m. ET: The first 74 miners have been rescued, the union tells AP."
Good to hear. - ThinkBox, on 10/13/2007, -28/+53Hey, Baby... wanna join the mile below club?
(sorry, sorry) - dtele, on 10/10/2007, -1/+241650 trapped gold miners rescued so far, with around 1500 miners still trapped :
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,2204 ... - DeskFlyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21AFP is reporting over 1000 are out safely so far, no major injuries reported as of yet. Looking promising. :)
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -6/+26Kinda puts that.. "omg there are 5 miners trapped.. what a horrid accident!" thing into perspective ..
Doesn't it? - norcal311, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24Who's there? who's there?
Look who it is! Hey everybody, eyes and teeth! Eyes and teeth!
It's like a train comin down the tracks....
Chugga-chugga-chugga-chigga CHARLIE MURPHY!

-rick james - Treshnell, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17It's your job to give the rest of us a bad name? People like that are why the world hates the U.S.A.
- blubberlump, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11If you actually *read the article*, it isn't nearly as bad as the alarmist headline. Sure, it is probably scary, but the mine didn't collapse on them and they are all being rescued.
- psyjoniz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10exactly the type of American trash that the whole world justifiably hates.
- jspegele, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I think you mean "Hey, Butch". We're taling about miners here . . . miners.
- saggygrandma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9thats soooo bad man....
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Only 3126 to go!
- azurechaos, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11well then get the ***** out of here. why are you even posting?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12That was so wrong... you need a personal sub for that...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+19How is this Bush's fault and how can the democrats create a tax around it?
- DeFex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7actually if there were 5 AMERICAN miners trapped it would receive more attention, there lives, although not worth much to the government, are still newsworthy.
- reyalp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Never forget 10/3
10/3 was an inside job. - Sinudeity, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6As a local, I can say, that its not a life-threatening situation.
The only real threat, is that many folks missing dinner. - AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Safety regulations are a bit different from Africa to the U.S.
- PeauxBoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Don't worry, Ron Paul will make this all better!
- RichLatherX23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There -is- a movie about miners trapped in a flooded mine. It's called "Gold".
http://imdb.com/title/tt0071566/ - modelcadet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Diamonds are forever...
Just remember, a diamond is the only way to show a woman you love her by:
Sacrificing two months of your salary; Exploiting South Africans laborers; Financing warlords' arms purchases; Continuing the tradition of buying women.
And no... the flawless synthetic diamonds just won't cut it (sorry bout the pun). - thesandbender, on 10/10/2007, -5/+91. This story is almost 24 hours old (alright digg!)
2. Miners were "trapped" because of an equipment malfunction. Their lives were never in danger.
3. Miners are currently being safely brought to the surface.
It was a apparently a slow news day and drudge and cnn didn't have anything to run in bold red letters. - HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This was yesterday, and they were not trapped. It's just the elevator isn't working so they have to use another. They have access to water and air and they can get 300 people an hour to the surface in the other elevator.
The primary elevator was even broken for hours and no one noticed it until the end of the shift!
Move along, nothing to see here. - Boondoggle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Actually, they get the mines because that is where the gold is. you can't just decide to start mining randomly someplace because the labor laws are favorable. Well.. and expect to actually find some gold.
- sdcarter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is a different situation entirely from ours. In our "omg there are 5 miners trapped... what a horrid accident!" situations the mines have actually collapsed on people. In this situation the main exit routes have been obstructed; but the miners are all safe. Still, I won't lie, if I was working in a mine and someone told me that the only exit is obstructed and we're all trapped... I'd crap myself.
- riverstyx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Amen, I was worried there for a second :)
Go south africa! - azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And there are no Loonie Righty's? Ha what a crock!
- fires, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You guys don't know what the ***** you're talking about. SA has minimum wage and a huge modern mining industry with the biggest gold deposits in the world. There is nothing wrong with their standards, mining accidents happen.
- RajS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3As of 8:20 AM (Eastern Standard Time - New York, NY) more than 2,000 have been rescued as per the NY Times who also reported at 7:00 AM it was 1,700 rescued...so its growing by the hour. Hopefully, the will ALL be out by the end of the day.
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/world/AP-South-Afr ... - unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Indulging in the comfort of our monkeysphere aren't we?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkeysphere - picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They're almost all out last time I heard.
- apetrie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Do you really need to make everything about yourselves?
- Snaieke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Aziz Light!
- boerseun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow, what ignorance. All countries outside the US have sub-par "_____". I grew up in South Africa in one of the largest, and at the time only petroleum from Coal plant in the world. The safety records of the mines in the surrounding areas were very good, and it is such a big deal that at the gate of all mines and factories, the number of days since the last accident is displayed for all to see. I don't want to start a pissing contest with you glenneroo, but you don't have a clue what you area talking about.
As a side note. There is an annual marathon held in one of the mines in my hometown. I don't think they would risk it if this was so much more dangerous than the USA. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Trapped SA miners emerge slowly
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/7027122.st ... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Right, so people can stop digging it now.
- EmperorAnton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wow over 3000 miners a mile under ground. That is like a small town underground.
- apetrie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Some of us don't.
- goerg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2the falling pipes just cut the electricity of the only person elevator...they are evacuating the guys with a smaller material elevator...noone hurt...
- ronaldinho, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3huh? This has nothing to do with this article. Go post your hybrid comments somewhere else bitch, even if I do support cheaper hybrids
- unitedstatians, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do matter how fast diggers can submit the stories it's never "BREAKING!", Broken maybe.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Nobody fart.
- iainc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@foxhaze: Oh my god! It's true: sick ***** like you really do exist. Most decent Americans would probably disown you.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey Enus, I gave you mom a quarter for her services last night. Tell her she can keep the change.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A few examples of women who don't don't prove me wrong. Women like stupid useless jewels just like men like stupid big cars and flat screen TVs.
- seraph582, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd hate to be the only female trapped down there...
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Hey Cletus, is your sheet ready for the rally tonight? Did you and your cousin tie the knot yet?
- Empyrean, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Well Im glad some countries know how to effectively rescue trapped miners then...
- kilps, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If I remember correctly I heard on the news that there are woman miners down there aswell...
