- GGzah, on 04/01/2008, -1/+20Stepping down peacefully? Of all the possible outcomes, I would have thought this the least likely.
Hopefully it's true... - Ransomowris, on 04/01/2008, -0/+13April Fools!!!
-Mugabe - kjax82, on 04/01/2008, -0/+11Wow. I need to get myself checked. At a glance, the title looked like "28 Years of Tranny..."
- Bassett, on 04/01/2008, -3/+14A great day for democracy and freedom! Down with all tyrants!
- rz8472, on 04/01/2008, -3/+11This sounds great - even under an oppressive regime, Zimbabweans are expressing who's responsible for the country being in the state it is without fear.
Hopefully this isn't some sick April Fool's ploy by the BBC. That would be on the level of FOX News. - InspectorGadget, on 04/01/2008, -0/+7Good, and I hope they hang him on the way out.
- sublimer, on 04/01/2008, -1/+7nah nah nah nah
nah nah nah nah
hey hey hey, goodbye! - duncan91, on 04/01/2008, -0/+6Great day for democracy or world's worst April fools joke?
- inactive, on 04/01/2008, -0/+6Exactly. I mean, whats tyrannous about political executions and mass starvation?
- Sifter, on 04/01/2008, -0/+5Like he deserves a deal. He just needs to go.
- petewhite, on 04/01/2008, -0/+5about time
- chochazel, on 04/01/2008, -1/+5Actually he has been accused of mass murder of tribespeople in the early years of his regime.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/panorama/184 ...
Then he abolished the position of Prime Minister and declared himself president in 1987 with all the powers that go with it.
He's been in power ever since.
Not that decent then. At least not for the people he was slaughtering.
Life lesson re insane tyrants:
Just because insane tyrants aren't focusing their ire on you, it doesn't mean
a) that they're decent rulers
b) that you won't be on the wrong side of their brutality somewhere down the line. - ozymandias2012, on 04/01/2008, -0/+4Hard to believe....I thought for sure he would die in office.
- bentman78, on 04/01/2008, -1/+5Name one accomplishment other than driving his country into starvation please.
He and his Marxist cronies were no good for that country. Zimbabwe went from breadbasket to *****-basket in less than a decade... - Derex, on 04/01/2008, -0/+4That would be sick! but I highly doubt it. It's all over the wires.
- Quaoar, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3That Mugabe might step down peacefully will be good for all of Africa. Zimbabwe was once the breadbasket of Africa with thousands of farms producing needed food products. Mugabe has reduced Zimbabwe to a beggar nation, producing nothing of value compared to what its citizens once produced. It might take ten years to restore Zimbabwe to its once glorious status. I certainly hope that the new regime can operate as the savior of the nation, rather than the next rapist of this nation.
- inactive, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3I want to see another (african) leader do anything better. Is there one country in Africa that has any stability?
- Easty, on 04/01/2008, -1/+4APRIL FOOL'S!
*totalitarianises* - Frnnkdlxx, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3My initial reaction was: "My Ass".... But, we'll see....
- Vorpallion, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3Good, and high time. Mugabe is one of the worst dictators still around and arguably has had far the worst effect on the country he tyrannizes.
When he seized control, Zimbabwe was the shining jewel of Africa, almost the model state there, extremely prosperous, orderly, and wealthy. Then Mugabe implemented his racist seizure and divvying up of the farms and Zimbabwe went from being the bread basket of Africa to facing starvation.
He's pretty thoroughly and systematically pillaged it. - Cattywampus, on 04/01/2008, -1/+4Maybe we have different definitions of "tyrant," but this excerpt from the article you link to is telling...
"Mugabe unleashed his notorious North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade, dominated by his own majority Shona tribe, on Matebeleland, where 30,000 people were killed and thousands more raped and maimed."
That alone fits my definition, and there's much much that he did over the decades, including seizing white-owned farms. Yes, he was a hero when first gained power, but those days are long gone. - 3rdDay, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3If Mugabe goes quietly (and it's not clear yet that he will) then this is great news for Zimbabwe and for African democracy. Long live freedom.
- nydwarf, on 04/01/2008, -0/+3This is 28 years too late.
- protossss, on 04/01/2008, -1/+3I agree it could be a great day, but not for democracy. In a democracy there is no need to "outline a deal". Same thing happened here in Kenya - the people voted out an incumbent, but instead a "deal" was made. The old regime is still in power :(
- InspectorGadget, on 04/02/2008, -1/+3VinceNoir, if you actually compared living conditions in the United States (still a net grain exporter) to Zimbabwe (went from the highest grain exports in Africa to importing 90+% of its grain) you need to get your head examined. Marxist economic systems fail - this is the perfect example. The "proletariat" is given land in a land grab, cronies set up industry backed by state power, and everything goes to *****. Until you can point to an equal problem caused by "capitalism", and not a strawman version of it, shut the ***** up. Railing against Marxists is what reasonable people do. The most civilian deaths at the machinery of the state in the 20th century took place in its two most notable Marxist governments - China and the USSR. Cuba had a higher GDP than Japan before Castro and now has the lowest in Latin America. Your steadfast denial of economic facts boggles the mind. Anyone defending Mugabe by distorting the historical record needs a bullet to the brain stem and a hasty burial. Sic semper tyrannis.
- ashwinmudigonda, on 04/01/2008, -2/+4I read it as 28 year old Tranny
- inactive, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2Mugabe is enough to make me be able to say confidently that Zimbabweans would have been better off under white rule in Rhodesia. That makes him a tyrant in my book.
- chochazel, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2I think you missed the mass murder thing there.
- SilverBadger, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2Sic semper tyrannus!
- jsgill, on 04/01/2008, -1/+3He was actually a decent (and democratically elected) ruler (especially compared with a lot of other African rulers) for several years, he went farily mental in the mid 1990's and everything has gone down hill since. I know this because my parents emigrated there in the early 1980s for several years. Anyone who says he has always been as bad as he is know doesn't know *****
- cgomez, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2Inaccurate: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7325524.stm
- zadadka, on 04/01/2008, -0/+2If Robert Mugabe accepts defeat graciously then it IS a great day for Zimbabwe, without doubt.
It should be noted, however begrudgingly, that Mugabe does earn respect points if he does so...a real tyrant would have simply refused to accept, and so reject, any poll that saw him "out of favour"...the International Community would then be back to square one, and the people of Zimbabwe would be left with little alternative but to perform a "popular uprising" as the only available option towards giving their own lives and country back to themselves.
Personally, I know little of Tsvangirai and his political capabilities, but frankly, he can be a purple creature with 19 arms and four legs for all I care, it has reached the point when ANY sort of creature in charge will be better for the Zimbabwean people than Mugabe.
There's an absolute FLOOD of solid-economy proposals waiting patiently at the door that will truly benefit the Zimbabwean people, and ALL they are waiting for is Mugabe to leave.
I look forward to reading in the (now) not-too-distant future, of the prosperity and happiness of the Zimbabwean people, many have whom have simply endured for the last couple of decades.
All The Best Zimbabwe.....Good Luck !! :) - inactive, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Freudian Slip FTW.....
- zadadka, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Put your analyst on danger-money and we'll say no more about it... :)
- Cattywampus, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Some people would say that's the age when they're in their prime!
- inactive, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1In the end he didn't achieve his ultimate goal in life, sip tea with her majesty. The Brits must be a happy bunch.
- jeffiek, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1"good ruler" is a contradiction in terms
- Boggy1, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Official election sources contradict these preliminary results, and are stating that no party has won, and that a second poll may be needed. I hope they are mistaken; the last thing that this broken country needs is more civil strife.
- patch6, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1He doesn't deserve a peaceful exit.
- Sinudeity, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1I NEVER thought Robert Mugabe would give up power, if he lost the elections.
This is a FANTASTIC day for Southern Africa!
Good luck to the MDC in rebuilding the country. - Spies, on 04/01/2008, -1/+2Listed as number 7 on the "Who Is the World’s Worst Dictator?" Parade list http://www.parade.com/export/sites/default/article ...
- inactive, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Where do you get that checked?
- JanYpe, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Mugabe has probably been enticed by the health benefits of not being taken outside and shot in the face with an AK-47.
- bentman78, on 04/01/2008, -2/+3quite to the contrary, Zimbabwe as the lowest life expectancy in Africa, He has been a plague to that country and needs to step down or die so someone else can take his place.
The education was in place before he got there. - robEstyles, on 04/01/2008, -0/+1Who else read this headline real fast and thought a 28-year old tranny was leaving Mugabe
- Sinudeity, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Human rights violator = Mugabe
- bratpack8, on 04/01/2008, -5/+5You want an example of what can happen to the US dollar, look no further than here. Just another dictator who should have been hung long ago.
- genericcynic, on 04/01/2008, -0/+0Well, arguably it sounds more likely... :-)
- anntheman, on 04/05/2008, -0/+0Mugabe will not leave. He will stay in power or face a trial at the Hague for crimes against humanity along with his henchmen.
He wants another election so he can kill and intimidate voters.
