- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Perhaps we could simply merge the Dept of Education and the Bureau of Prisons. Sending children in armored buses with shotgun-wielding guards to a maximum-security educational facility seems like the logical thing to do to keep the children safe. American youth gulags FTW!
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17i think it was sarcasm...
- tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14That was something fancy I noticed about 9/11. Before 9/11, there were shark bite reports almost daily. Then apparently, after 9/11, sharks stopped biting people.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14462 out of how many millions? That's a pretty small number.
I wonder how many more students and faculty were killed while driving to school. But wait, that's not newsworthy shock journalism.
School shootings is just media hype. If it gets old, they'll revert back to reporting about shark attacks, like they did in the summer of 2001. - dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I just got back from my home at the bottom of the sea, so that's news to me! Has President Reagan commented on this terrible event?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And I guess yours only lets the criminals have them.
Good plan. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13If kids were taught how to be more nice to each other then maybe it would curb the bullying which leads to pissed off nerds with guns.
When school shootings are sexual in nature it just means one thing which is that those guys weren't getting any at the age in which their targets are. The solution to this is easy, teach safe sex and encourage girls to be sluts from an early age so guys won't grow up to want revenge. - graystar, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19When you have a government which solves problems using violence it is not surprising the children do the same now is it?
- MrLunar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Because it's the new 'hip' thing to do?
- PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@dshPls
One word of advice. Duck... - gormly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9it's called freedom
if that happens to hurt someone else, we then put yo ass in jail
until then you get the benefit of the doubt.. we live with it, we die with it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Many of these people are perfectly normal until this point. Many countries allow a person to own a gun.
- retasker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So the gun went into the school and discharged itself? Not likely. Oh my someones car ran a stop sign. It must not be the driver at fault. I prefer to have my guns. Than to have no security. In a country that has citizens without guns, then they become the prey for the criminals who do. But that could go back to the fact that gun control is being able to hit your target.
- Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11If you read the goddamned article, we wouldn't have to put up with your retarded video game blame. The shootings were done by a 53 y/o, a 32 y/o, a 27y/o, and one 15 y/o.
the 15 year old was too young to legitimately have GTA. The others are probably too old to be playing it (or Amish and therefore dont have GTA either).
Theres not much that gets me as mad as when someone blames video games for shootings and murder. people kill people, not guns, and not games, and thats how it will always be. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Another reason I advocate cutting school funding. Cut the overhead, put more in the hands of the teachers, and stop teaching outcome-based cirriculums. Stick to the math, sciences, and much needed language and skills. Schools and their costs continue to escalate but the results are getting worse. Yet, every year the answer is more money. I say it's less money. Ever wonder why kids from dirt-poor backwoods schools blow the national curve? Because all they have a books, limited budgets, and limited resources so they tend to maximize them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This reminds me of Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Tipping Point, where he discusses social memes. Here's an easily digestible snippet : http://www.since1968.com/index.php?id=68
Oops I actually didn't mean to thread hijack for once...stupid parenting. - Daunting, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Now just because the media likes to run amuck with these stories does not mean that is really not an issue at all. This growing amount of hopelessness is just an external example of many people that feel as if they fell off the bandwagon of the world. When a civilization has a growing rate of suicide it's a good indicator that there's something happening that's not giving the citizens the feeling of acceptance by the society. I dunno how there would be a cure for this, but it is a problem.
I just feel that there are a lot more important issues besides these but still, it is sad. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Last time I checked Walmart sells rifles...
The reason Americans have the right to bear arms is that should the need arise to overthrow our government we would have the arms to do so. ANY restrictions on weponary degrades our right and inhibits our ability to overthrow our government.
Does anyone have a Raptor I can have as well as some flying lessons? Maybe a couple of missles wouldn't hurt. - PuffyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In the US you're twice as likely to die from being struck by lightening and about 200 times more likely to die from food poisoning. Is it a terrible tragedy? Absolutely, but let's not panic and call this the next 'epidemic'.
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They need a pshycic detective, I heard Eric Cartman is pretty good. He can take on about 6 or so other pshycic detectives at once!
- jgzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And it is increasingly likely that we will have to do so. A sufficiently paranoid person might wonder if these attacks were staged, using some kind of Area 51 Mind control device. The Bush administration would then have an excuse to remove our 2nd amendment rights.
I'm not quite that paranoid yet. - jonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's a social meme :-/
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7America is a hellhole?
- thall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"...twice as likely to die from being struck by lightening..."
The difference in these stats is locality (and I don't just mean geography). What is newsworthy here is the sudden rise in *rate* of shootings over a period of time. A new trend has been revealed that, even though may appear rare when compared to the average person being struck by lightning doing an average thing on an average day, could stem from something that may trigger even more similar incidents in the near future. Focusing on these events now could help us prevent such tragedies. - shadydentist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"Most would agree that when it comes to children being killed at school, even one is too many."
No, I actually think that one is exactly the right number. WTF? - Guncrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm...I wonder how many school shootings there were before the creation of the Department of Education in 1979.
- gormly, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7>>"Why the Spike in School Shootings?"
it's all part of Bush, Chaney, and Halliburtons evil plan.
Muhahahahahahaha - kalisphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4What the flying ***** does this have to do with random middle-aged ***** killing schoolgirls?
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its pretty bad, I hope the shootings stop. But the reality is they wont. Its going to be difficult times ahead. I dont want to see them turning schools into jails either.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the guy who killed the Amish wasnt Amish. How would an Amish get a gun?
- shawgo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1go to a store and buy it like anyone else, I guess.
- jakatak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1just one more reason I am thankful for being a guy.
- SteveMitchell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's simply copycats who were inspired by the first shooting. Remember all the school shootings within a week after Columbine?
I hypothesize if the media played down the first incident, the majority of the other 24 would never had happened. Of course that would require a dictatorship-like control of a free society, and I am a fan of free-press. - Idealistic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"That was something fancy I noticed about 9/11. Before 9/11, there were shark bite reports almost daily. Then apparently, after 9/11, sharks stopped biting people."
Well they don't want to be labeled terrorist and have America start a "War on Sharks". Man your harpoon guns, get out the fishing boats, its time to show these damned extremist sharks what happens when they mess with The Greatest Country on Earth (TM)! - Ron77Rox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone's missing the point! If someone's hell bent on taking you and bunch of people, there's nothing that can be done to stop it. No changes in the law or school security would have stopped thses tragedies. Another issue is the fact that America has long history of violence. From what I read, it's clear that some would rather find the easy answer than find a long term solution.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hey the government loves these school shootings because that way they can federalize the schools and turn the schools into prisons even more than they already are, start ***** like "okay every gun owner has to have a psychological examination". "Oh what's that? You strongly believe in The Constitution and The Bill of Rights? No gun for you!"
The problem with these school shootings is how they help the government directly / indirectly, because it's a great excuse to go gun-grabbing. - wutthefuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 If he had grown up and been a Man!....We would not have idiots running around doing s*** like this. Yeah I know his baby's death screwed him up pretty good, but for Chirst's Sake.......move on!!!
Then the coward Kills him self cause he can't face the music of being in jail! I am sure there are plenty of people in Maximum that would loved to have met his acquaintance?
I vote for more punishment on Child Molesters!(ie LET ME DRAG THERE ASS BEHIND MY SEMI). Then send him to Maximum!! - asynctea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually this should be seen as a great success of the public education system. They've been trying to teach the eager young minds that they are in fact animals for years... Now poor souls are killing each other. Like animals... Why is it surprising that this is the outcome.
- dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I agree, stop teaching kids how to take tests. But this however doesn't solve the violence issue. Back in HS some of the kids just didn't get it, fashion or trends or whatever...these "dorks" always got ***** thrown at them, just because they didn't understand how to socialize. This is what causes the problem, combined with problems at home. Teachers don't pick up on it, cause they don't see it. Needless to say, I've smacked many nerds in the back of their afro's with a paperball or wasp, and got away with it.
- Suits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I wonder what nationality the shooters are, the majority?
- DrAvril, on 02/16/2008, -0/+0It's obvious men are going crazy....killing wives, killing pregnant girlfriends, killing teachers, colleagues and whoever else... go to an all girls school and college where men are not even allowed on the campus. I did! I never worried about getting raped or killed and was able to focus on getting my education. You'll get a wonderful education without getting killed first. Men are devoling into rabid animals so just try not even being around them except for one thing....then run like hell before you get killed!
- boytelep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not bragging....my father began his career
as a teacher and retired as a Director of
the biggest school board in the Capital city, of my country.
Never ever remember him mentioning any
kind of gun activity in any school at any time.
I'm sure it wasn't a matter of sheltering my siblings and I,it just NEVER happened! I'm sure he's watching and
shedding a tear or two with each horrible
TRAGEDY. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Monkey shootings don't make the news... only white people
- psyops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Shoot! It must be the terrorist's fault. Let's sick our kids on them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's obviously time to send in the US Army.
- happyMac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@spd998
-- guns make these attacks safer. Remember Columbine? If those boys had been denied guns they would have been more proficient at bomb making and the bombs they planted around the school would have worked killing many more people.
For the amount of fire power these gunmen have it is very fortunate that so few people are actually shot.
School shootings happen even in countries with gun control: many have happened in Canada, the UK and France. Why hasn't it stopped these kids? - Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Its because of video games! Thats an easy one!
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1i blame bush and global warming - bastards. both of them.
- sonick, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Yeah, Dick Cheney (and his hunting incident).
I mean, he's the VICE PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES... You'd think he'd be an ideal role model for the youth to look-up to and admire, right? - dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Of course we do... how else is the Army gonna meet its recruiting goals?
