- 10001110101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+45I wish Canada's logo had a beaver on it. That would be truly fear inspiring.
- lostradamus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36Canada's got Lightsabers!
- profOblivion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35C'mon, don't be so harsh. It's got a dragon. A freaking DRAGON. Would you argue with a dragon?
- skjede, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34Ireland: We've got fat green men with glaives, possibly drunk. GTFO
- mdjohnson1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28Nothing is scarier than an eagle attack when that eagle is carrying swords.
- kitchung, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I think the Japanese one needs to have ninjas on it. And swords. Lots of swords.
- twrife, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20Why did you say 17? There are 23...
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Iran gets bonus points for using CG in their logo. But can anybody top Russia's special forces (OMON) motto: "OMON knows no mercy and forgives none. This is the way it is, was, and always will be."
- Cyhwuhx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19.::: OK, I'm biased, sue me. But I was actually surprised at how 'modern' the Dutch one is in comparison to the others...
- kippa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16That would be because they were all part of the British Empire and took their logos from the British one originally.
- monkeyrun, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18lol, The Japanese one looks like a bad web 2.0 logo.
- WarpFox, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Possibly?
- Antitheft, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Ireland's looks like a logo for the World Cup. Portugal has the most bad-ass.
- Rfriaz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15How many of them employ attack eagles?
- Racerx52, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14I liked Portugal more than the others.
Lithuania a close second. - ncdave101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14It does have ninjas....you just can't see them
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17Fearsome? The japanese one doesn't look fearsome at all neither does the irish harp
And the indian one maybe fearsome in the outset with the lions.. but the text says "satyameva jayathe" which means let truth truimph. less than fearsome. - 10001110101, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Damn right we do.. And if we're putting it on our logo, you don't want to know what we're keeping under wraps. (think "moon sized laser").
- fatbert, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I think it's some sort of bear-wolf hybrid. And definitely the coolest logo on that list.
Lithuania: We might be small, but our army of bear-wolves will ***** you up big time. - venom8599, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The Iron Cross wasn't a Nazi symbol. It dates back to Prussia in the 1800s, and has been used by Germany's armed forces since before even the First World War.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Netherlands wins hands down. That logo scares the ***** out of me.
- cptnjack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I may be nitpicking. It actually says "seva paramo dharma" -- serving is the supreme duty. Still not very fearsome.
"satyameva jayate" is the national motto of India, but definitely was not on the logo.
Why is the eagle and crossed blades so prominent in all ex-british colonies' logos? did British have different logos for their colonies, and the colonies kept the logs afterwards? - monkeyrun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah, it's actually so bad that you didn't notice it.
- sum4me, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8do you know how to read Sanskrit? because you got the text on the Indian logo wrong. it says "seva parmo dharma" which means loosely " service is the highest duty"
- kitchung, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6actually, Godzilla would be cool too.
- 808kick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know that we're all Commonwealth countries.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah...especially if it was Celine Dion's beaver.
/runs - SteelChicken, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10The USA is the only country in the world who can spell stuff any way they want and THERES NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT
RAWR - chrsgo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You can really tell all of the former UK colonies by their logo. The crossed-swords are all over the place. UK, Australia, India, New Zealand, Canada.
- gnazzah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think it's the other way around. The golden lion dates back to 1103: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norges_riksvåpen
To my knowledge Peugeot did not manufacture cars back then. - tjanson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The Dutch are pretty damn modern regarding a lot of things: They're very liberal/progressive, they have the highest broadband coverage rate of the EU and are something like #3 in speed. The government does a LOT for the environment (in contrast to most of the other nations that have somewhat halfassed policies to protect their economy), the cities are extremely bicycle-friendly (google "dutch bicycle" - be surprised O.O). They are always in the top five in European statistics, along with the Scandinavian nations: "In 2003, the countries where press was the most free were Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands and Norway.", (Wikipedia, just one example, it's always those four countries...)
- shinythingy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I wasn't aware that so many countries would use swords in modern warfare
- gnazzah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5And here I was thinking the defense of a country should be pleasant and comforting act for a nation. Portugal has a dragon. I defenately want a dragon on my team! Way more intelligent than eagles and lions and whatnot too.
- Bolarg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Eagle+Anchor+Sword=Defense
- WarpFox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yea, but doesn't it remind you of something?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Peacekeeper-missile-testing.jpg - drummerjed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Portugal. Who would ***** with a country with dragons in their defense Ministry logo?
- merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Note that that history starts 100 years *before* Hitler. So while kids these days may look at that symbol and think Nazism, the symbol's actually far older.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences#-ce_.2F_-se
- SimianSamurai, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7The Ireland logo isn't supposed to be a harp, although it does come across as one. It's supposed to be a soldier standing guard with a shield and a spear.
- kitchung, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4um, japan is the first one.
- Arbus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4W**t's wrong, Charlie Br**n? The little ***-headed girl ***l you to go C***ey yourself?
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Maybe because defensive deparment is defensive? ;-)
- brugger1982, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Portugal's is ballah!
The only thing cooler would be a Trogdor logo - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What about BEARS WITH SWORDS?!?
- t1m1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Actually, according to German Wikipedia, the German one is *NOT* the logo of the defense ministry, see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:BMVG_Logo.svg - the logo in poll belongs to the German Bundeswehr.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What's wrong, Charlie Brown? The little red-headed girl tell you to go Cheney yourself?
- Jugalator, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You read my mind :) And it seems to try embrace the Earth or something. "Can't we all just get along?" Hehe :)
- merreborn, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Note that India, Canada, Australia, New Zeland and the UK are all sporting the same basic design -- Crossed swords and an anchor behind an eagle with its head turned to the right.
Ask yourself this: Why? Who copied who?
If you can't answer that, then please, enroll in a remedial history course, immediately.
Sadly, this is the sort of question that I'd expect your average American couldn't answer (although I bet Digg'll do just fine). If there's anything we're worse at (on average) than geography, it's history. - Fant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What you are calling the "Iron Cross" is actually called a "Cross Patée" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_pattée). The cross is the symbol of the Teutonic Order (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teutonic_Knights) which goes back to the late 12th century. During the shortest 1000 years in history (i.e. the Nazi era...) the symbol of the German forces was a modified, more rectangular version (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht). Just in case someone cares and really wants to know this stuff ;-)
- harteLK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3and Ireland is top, by a ratio of nearly 2:1
