- oteque, on 04/02/2009, -2/+11R.I.P ..I wonder why we got so many air transports crashes recently. hmmm..
- ddogfilm, on 04/02/2009, -1/+9horribel news
- absolutelytrue, on 05/26/2009, -2/+10:( so sad.
- Foliot, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6All... Flying and *****, thinking their so hot. Douches.
- dcramps, on 04/02/2009, -1/+6ppl? Is it too much to ask to have proper spelling in story descriptions? You didn't have to change anything when you copy and pasted. I'm sorry..it just irks me a bit.
On topic now...is this not the second helicopter crash involved with the oil rigs recently? What's going on here? - Zippo, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Wow... this is all too reminiscent of the helicopter crash off the coast of Newfoundland just a few weeks ago.
Transporting to an offshore oil field... ditched in the ocean. 17 dead.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cougar_Helicopters_Fl ... - uzair21, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4So horrible. I feel bad for their Family members.
- slugpellet63, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4That's 3 different types of Puma crashed in 3-4 weeks, the latest in perfect conditions. 17 dead in Newfoundland and 8 confirmed so far in the latest with little hope for the other 8 missing. Something seriously wrong or just major coincidence - the Puma had only three crashes prior to this series of incidents with loss of life in only one of these. Either way wouldn't like to be an oil worker anywhere in the world having to fly offshore at this moment or when the Pumas are brought back into service.
Minor point - zero points for placement of Edinburgh on the AFP/Graphic map - I know we're a small insignificant country that barely registers on Yahoos collective brain but how difficult is it to get it right? It's in the same place its always been - pre-digitisation maps always got it right - is someone trying to take the piss? - waydee, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Horrible tragedy, I've done the offshore survival helicopter ditch training and found it traumatic enough - the thought of it happening for real is terrifying, from the sound of it this chopper must have came down at some speed though judging by the debris that has washed up in the Aberdeen area and the fact 8 bodies are still missing.
I believe this is the second worse fatal chopper crash in the history of North Sea oil, terrible way to go and my condolences towards the families. A sad reminder that offshore oil and gas workers do one of the most dangerous jobs out there. - dvsbastard, on 04/02/2009, -1/+5Horrible speeling!
- krytz86, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4RIP - scary stuff, i've been offshore in the north sea a few times...
- Ogedei, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Yep, was just about to post just that.
From "times colonist"
"First officer Tim Lanouette, 48, was one of two men operating the Sikorsky S-92, which was forced to ditch in the Atlantic Thursday after mechanical problems." http://www.timescolonist.com/news/Comox+pilot+amon ...

Not the same chopper. - KMartSheriff, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3There's a lot of scary ***** out there, but being left alone in the ocean is one of my biggest personal fears. Ugh, ***** that.
My prayers go out to those missing and their families. - insanebrain, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3>"What's going on here?"
They are buying bad helicopters. - kevgallacher, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Actually statistically speaking offshore jobs are some of the safest jobs out there. Safety is high priority more so than other jobs. Y
ou have a greater chance of a fatal accident driving to work onshore than you have whilst working offshore. Trips and falls around offices are of higher frequency than on offshore installations. - kevgallacher, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3The one in Newfoundland isn't a Puma, it's a Sikorsky S-92
- toastgodsupreme, on 04/02/2009, -5/+8Over 150,000 people you didn't know die every day (http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/ipc/pcwe). I'm sorry, but I just can't be bothered to get all sad panda over 16 people I didn't know. Wouldn't be fair to the other ~150,000.
I just don't get how:
1. Most of you can fake sadness and emo'ness over this kind of stuff on a regular basis.
and
2. If you do actually care and are saddened, how you can justify not feeling the same way every day, all day because of all the others constantly dying. It's too much.
I'm not saying this event wasn't sad. Of course it is. Just not for us because it doesn't touch us. So please don't pretend to be sad, or outraged, or whatever, when you can just not say anything at all and leave it at that. If anything, it just insults their memory by you paying them your platitudes. - slugpellet63, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Apologies, had been reported on the radio as three different types of Puma - maybe I misheard.
Makes coincidence more likely as the Feb crash in the North Sea had apparently been at least partly due to a faulty Terrain Avoidance Warning System and the Puma landing in the wrong place (the sea) in thick fog.
Here's where I got the info on Puma safety record:-
http://www.inquisitr.com/18368/18-survive-uk-helic ...
And here's where you can access a pdf of the interim safety report on the Feb Puma crash:-
http://www.aaib.gov.uk/publications/special_bullet ...
Again, apologies for misinformation. - peters1023, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Stupid comment....
I've done it too. But damn... - lennybird, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Because, unfortunately for most of us, ignorance is bliss. Any article epitomizing your statement of 150,000 deaths/day smacks that person back into reality; and not only mourns those who died there, but all deaths that do occur on a daily basis. Consider these sixteen people representatives to all the others...
- barc0de, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2I heard on the radio this morning that Bond helicopters have suspended all flights. After all thats three super-puma crashes in the last few weeks.
- max1018, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2There was that one that did successfully ditch a few weeks ago in the North Sea and everyone survived.
- kevgallacher, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Yeah the placement of all three Crimond, Edinburgh and Glasgow are all off, bad Geography.
They have put Edinburgh were Falkirk is, Glasgow where Paisley is and Crimond where Fraserburgh is. - phosphite, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2One person survived that crash miraculously, and another might have survived if the SAR hadn't taken an hour to reach the crash site.
- LingNoi, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Green peace heat seeking missiles
- kickingback77, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2My sympathies go out to the familes of those that are affected. Everyone knows the dangers when they drive a car, fly a plane, & fly in a helicopter. We just never expect to be the statistic that doesn't come home. I hope that Puma researches it helis to make sure they are not at fault in any form in these tragedies.
http://www.helinet.com - warriorscot, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2The helicopters they use are getting on and they are getting a lot of use in hard conditions. When we are talking about machines that complicated accidents are going to happen.
To be honest the Puma is a great bird but its not the best one for use in rig transfers. It is top heavy and has no adaptations for ditching in water. Older Sea Kings would be better to me they aren't as capable but they can survive a ditch in the water better than a Puma as they are designed for it. - Foliot, on 04/02/2009, -2/+3What is, your use of contractions?
- kevgallacher, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1It's the second crash involving the same company Bond Helicopters and their super puma range of helciopters
- Foliot, on 04/02/2009, -1/+2http://www.epiconeliner.com/
- VBTech, on 04/02/2009, -1/+2I wonder the same, oteque. But it's also possible that the articles normally don't reach the front page of Digg.
- kevgallacher, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1The inquistr article says "First manufactured in 1978, the Super Puma has a remarkably strong safety record, with only three known incidents until todays crash."
This makes it the 4th incident in the history of this aircraft. It does actually have a good safety record the one that ditch ed in February was a different model in the Puma range. - mgoldie, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1my cousin works in that oil rink. he was on the helicopter that crashed before and they all survived. this time he was on the next shift so he didnt go with this helicopter. he was so lucky. i cant understand all these accidents! he is thinking about quitting the job...it's so risking and terrifying.
- sanjayvyas21, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1its really terrible.
- dvsbastard, on 04/02/2009, -7/+7That was definitely NOT a roflcopter... :(
- KyloOb, on 04/02/2009, -6/+2Helicopters are ***** stupid.
- FOR3MAN, on 04/02/2009, -6/+2People who fly know the risks.
I say they had it coming, grrr controversial bear. - ABadPerson, on 04/02/2009, -15/+4April Fools!
- Tomasborlin, on 04/02/2009, -15/+2I guess ..the joke ..is on them ..YEEEEEEEEEEEEEAHHH
