- identifiedlogo, on 08/20/2008, -3/+107Man, thats sad
- tonich03, on 08/20/2008, -2/+69Now the official number is 151, it may grow as there are still victims in very bad condition. Everyone in Madrid is devastated right now. This is horrible.
- Haoie, on 08/20/2008, -5/+59Quite a major aviation disaster. Best wishes to the family/friends of the victims.
- mnpilot, on 08/21/2008, -0/+38Actually, Landing is the dangerous part of flying. Many more accidents involving the landing than departures.
Flying is the safest way to go..... - pin0chet, on 08/21/2008, -0/+35Sure, takeoff may be the most dangerous part of flying, but it's still incredibly safe to fly. In the U.S. over the past 6 years, there has been ONE fatal event involving a scheduled airline flight. Given the tens of millions of flights that occur each year, the odds of death by plane crash are about as close to zero as it gets--just 49 total deaths in six years, or about 1 in 6 million.
The chances you will get cancer tomorrow, or get into a car accident, or even get murdered are substantially higher than the odds of dying in a plane crash. - Hupo, on 08/21/2008, -5/+35As a pilot in training. I bow my head for everyone on board and there families.
- tallulahvulture, on 08/20/2008, -4/+34I've travelled on spanair before.
i saw the smoke today from home, its so sad. :(. - DteK, on 08/21/2008, -6/+33Take off is the most dangerous part of flying. This is the only time I really sweat a flight. Cant imagine the terror they must have gone through.
- Garofoli, on 08/21/2008, -3/+29What the hell guys? Why are we making jokes about this?
- unorginalityftw, on 08/21/2008, -1/+24There's always at least one ass.
- AuroraXT, on 08/21/2008, -2/+20Sadly, the death toll is now 153 and could go even higher due to several people being in critical condition.
Lets hope they make it through. - britblogger, on 08/21/2008, -3/+19I can't even fathom the terror the passengers and crew must have gone through... this is devastating - my heart goes to everyone's families.
- dojonz, on 08/21/2008, -8/+23Madrid is in Spain. Canadian school system > American school system.
- lopla, on 08/21/2008, -5/+20"After being informed of Wednesday's crash, Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero broke off his vacation in southern Spain and rushed back to Madrid, heading straight for the airport. He expressed condolences to people who lost loved ones "in this tragedy that struck us today." Later he went to the morgue to comfort mourners."
Very nice gesture, could you imagine Bush cutting short his brush clearing for something like this? Everytime I read about GOOD leaders it makes me sad to reflect on our own despicable piece of trash president. - coldkill3r, on 08/21/2008, -3/+17Just goes to show you anything can happen, and that you should live life to the fullest while you still have it. Nothing but my condolences to the family and friends.
- mrgodai, on 08/21/2008, -7/+20May their souls rest in peace.
- Yshinozuka, on 08/21/2008, -8/+19RIP
- cnot3, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10I know flying is one of the safest ways to travel, but it still gets my testicles in a knot hearing about ***** like this. I'm not afraid of flying, I'm just afraid of crashing.
- GamerX, on 08/21/2008, -0/+10Oh man, now this is just plain bad taste... Are you mentally disabled or something?
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -4/+14Yeah... yet ***** like MrBabyMan keep posting stupid ***** and reach the front page in no time
- Ladymongoose, on 08/21/2008, -2/+11Try being so flippant when it's your relative on the next plane that crashes. *****.
- grumpyrain, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9It depends. Statistically, you are probably right, but when landing there is almost always the option of aborting whereas there is a point during takeoff where it is impossible to stop before the end of the runway and you are committed to a take off and subsequent landing even if there is problems.
I have also heard that statistically you are more likely to die on the way to the airport than on the flight.
But in any case, this is really sad news for the friends and family of those killed and injured. - Ohnodonho, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9I was thinking more of the psychological aspects of it.
- w21irving, on 08/21/2008, -3/+10DIGG, lets just leave these kind of articles commentless, there really isnt much to say, and silence makes for a better sign of respect.
- Duncanizer1, on 08/21/2008, -3/+10We really need that type of comments, thank you very much, idiot.
- Lyght, on 08/21/2008, -2/+9Do you really have to be so condescending when it comes to comments like Hupo's?
"Oh, you're expressing sympathy for people that lost their lives? I'm a obsessive jerk, so can you please spell correctly while doing so? Kthx!" - 420Bane, on 08/21/2008, -0/+7*or punctuate.
- bonlebon, on 08/21/2008, -1/+8Damn, is that airport cursed or what? I've heard of so many tragedies around it.
Think is time to retire ye olde md-80s from fleets around the world. That plane has been getting a bad rap lately.
My empathy to those affected by this tragedy. - Hupo, on 08/21/2008, -1/+8I been up for 3 days. I dont care how I type.
- joot2112, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6At least in a car I have some control over it, and if a semi crushes me or some drunk driver nails me head-on, I'll barely have time to think about it. With cancer and a lot of diseases I might have a chance at treatment and opportunity to prepare my family. The thought of falling for 2 whole minutes or burning to death in a crowd of people scares me worse than cancer, car wreck, heart attack, or just about any method of death you could come up with. The probability isn't what worries me, it's the "ever so slight chance of dying most horribly".
- endustry, on 08/21/2008, -0/+6Spain had the 8th highest GDP in 2007. 3rd world?
- Divector8, on 08/21/2008, -1/+6Most of the people asphyxiated from the smoke before they had a chance to get burned. Still very tragic but at least they didn't suffer anything as horrific as being burned alive.
- Ohnodonho, on 08/21/2008, -7/+12I can't imagine what it would be like to be one of a handful of people to survive a disaster.
- britblogger, on 08/21/2008, -4/+8ah, you never let us down - the token Digg *****. poor taste man, poor taste indeed.
- tapeworm77, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4I heard crashing was the most dangerous part.
- Retrodigg123, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4The airliner 2 days before it crashed.

Its weird because ive actually travelled on a Spanair MD-82 not even 2 months ago. - Lith25, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4Just how fast do you expect things to pop up on digg? This isn't a live news feed.
- mhuggins, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4The bad news is it wasn't you on the plane.
- whazdown, on 08/21/2008, -0/+4*****.
- joits, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5what goes around...
- MrFisty, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3I think any death where you're in a state of fear or panic would be horrible beyond words.
- ap1983, on 08/21/2008, -1/+4Thoughts, prayers and meditations for all those suffering right now
- WhoDoneIt, on 08/21/2008, -2/+5I would be scared if I were you. You know what they say... Plane crashes always happen in twos at the same place.
Idiot. - IDIGTHEDIGG, on 08/21/2008, -7/+10Wow that is scary as hell, I was in Madrid a couple of weeks ago and it just shows how anything can happen at any time.
RIP - gearhead364, on 08/21/2008, -11/+14It is sad that it took so long for this to reach the front page.
- mkamal, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3153 as I type this.
- csrster, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3A whole group of people I know professionally were flying into Madrid from the Canaries just shortly after the accident. It shouldn't make a difference, but it's weird how you feel more affected by something like this knowing that people you know are in the vicinity.
- kaunaz, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3The plane was american, fyi.
Since when is Spain, Europe, a third world country? - macgon, on 08/21/2008, -0/+3FYI, Northwest Airlines has much older planes than the one that crashed, they have DC-9s which are at least 30 years old.
- firebat9er, on 08/21/2008, -4/+7**or fly a plane.
