The youngest was 13, while this is obviously waaaaay too young, this is the most extreme example they could find, and thus they post it in the story to stir up a panic. The most common age amongst all of them are not given, specifically because if most of them are older, such as 16-17, it is not quite as outrageous, and definitely doesn't qualify the intentionally outrageous "child prostitutes" headline.
Ask yourself, which conjures up more threatening images: "10 child prostitutes in Washington rescued." or "10 teenage prostitutes in Washington rescued"?
This is part of a wider attempt to paint the profession of prostitution as an evil of society that is nothing but predatory in nature (which is not true). The violence and victimization of prostitutes both adult and underage is directly connected to the black market in which it is forced to reside. Compare the treatment of women under thuggish pimps to those who work for legal brothels.
I am not advocating the prostitution of teenagers, nor would legalized prostitution get rid of this specific situation, I am merely pointing out the intentions of this inflated outrage. This article focuses so intensely on the prostitution of these girls and prosecution of their pimps and clients, and dedicates only a tiny fraction of the article to the root cause of these girls situations: Lack of any family or social support. They have run away from broken homes or never had much of a home to begin with. They get sucked into these worlds out of necessity; they need to survive. They are just as much victims of a failure of family/society/govt as they are victims of those that operate (and patronize) these prostitution rings. I never suggested that. I made a distinction between those who work for legal brothels and street hookers.
