In Soviet Russia, tree hugs you. - draebor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+88Here's my favorite line:
"Apparently, being the only tree in that part of the wide-open desert (remember: there wasn’t another tree for 250 miles around), wasn’t enough to stop a drunk Libyan truck driver from driving his truck into it, knocking it down and killing it!" - wicketr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47"damn tree came out of nowhere! I swear!"
- macamatition, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44Its people like that drunk Libyan driver who need to be poked in the eye with a hot french fry!
- RTPMatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32What about this tree:

? - z3r0c0O1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25How the hell does someone manage to hit the only tree for miles and miles, in the middle of nowhere, in a desert with a truck?
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24What an oddly specific punishment.

It's the baby Deku Tree. - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13with a little alcohol in your system, anything is possible.
great article btw. - demodawid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17"The Tule tree is so thick that people say you don’t hug this tree, it hugs you instead!"
In soviet Russia... etc. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11i didn't see 'the great deku tree' on that list. buried.
- CaptainHarlock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Where's the tree that eats Charlie Brown's kite?
- randf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12seriously? it's kinda nice to find stories like this after wading around in the (insert your favorite us vs them) rantfilled pages.
- carbonetc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Another overlooked tree... the Angel Oak in SC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Oak
- Axolotl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9One of the more interesting stories I've ever seen on digg. I wish I could digg this more than once. So much better than 90% of the stuff that hits the front page.
- 29Victor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@rtpmatt
I hope they put barricades around it so no one hits it with a truck. - vuthy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I really liked this article. Was a bit depressing to learn that the oldest tree and the solitary tree were both destroyed by humans. It's amazing what nature can accomplish, and how much it can withstand without the luxuries and tools we humans have, and after thousands of years of trucking along, bam, one quick, simple act of man ends it all. :(
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Was "No.1, The Larch" ?
- bookishboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why the digg down?
The title of the story is "Most Unforgettable Trees".
This was a real, actual tree that had a poem written about it. The tree, or at least its poem, is so famous that most native English speakers have probably heard the poem quoted at one time or another.
And it's not on the list. - nickway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6How about the Golden Spruce?
A True Story of Myth, Madness, and Greed tells the story of a sacred tree, a logger-turned environmentalist and a shocking act of environmental protest in the woods of British Columbia.
On January 22, 1997, a 48-year-old unemployed logger named Grant Hadwin surreptitiously fell the tree as a political statement against logging companies. He was later arrested, but mysteriously disappeared before he could be brought to trial. According to John Vaillant's book "The Golden Spruce", Hadwin's broken kayak and effects were found on a remote island some time after he went missing in a rough sea. Whether he had been killed, accidentally drowned, or left his belonging behind on purpose is not known.

- xxenclavexx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Haha, I love digg. I can be totally bored at work and then the next minute I am seeing somthing very interesting that I would never of thought of to look up my self. I mean come on, I never thought I would be interested in trees, but here I am staring in amazement.
- TTTrouble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Friend 1: "DUDE! NO DRUNK DRIVING IN THE DESERT YOU MIGHT HIT SOMETHING!!"
Friend 2: "Relaxxx, we're in the desert, there's nothing here but sand and--WTF!!?"
Friend 1: "You *****." - DaBrainiac, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13This will proably get dugg down, but, I think it is all you can say: That was a really cool article.
- coldhandshake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The Tree of Ténéré in the 1970s, before a truck crashed into it"
That tree is in the of a large desert, how the hell do you crash into it?... - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Still in my nightmares.
- Ziqing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Lonely Tree of Ténéré was my favorite, very symbolic and being the last of acacias in the desert. Its sad how it was destroyed by the Libyan driver.
- Livert, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11LOL. The tree that pwns itself....
- youngexec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ah.. the good old banyan Tree. We use to have one big Banyan Tree in our village. We weaved the the aerial-roots to make hammocks :D It was a really good place to hide when you want to skip school or underage smoking :P
Sadly it was chopped down to make a way for a new building. - mtriper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This one in Brazil has grown sideways because of wind...

- sonofcali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't see any of the LOTR trees.
- dcmjzero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i saw the general sherman just a couple of weeks ago. simply amazing. picture do no justice. i couldn't get the whole thing in one picture unless i was standing over 50 yards away. photos from that part of my trip are of trunks of trees...
though, when i went there, there was 4 feet of snow. go during the summer if you can. - cspivack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually went to Ta Prohm, so it was weird suddenly seeing a picture from there. The trees are all over that temple, pretty crazy stuff.

Pics of tree and a sign describing the tree - Kohath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was an 11th one, but no one can remember what it looked like or why it was unusual. Nice tree though.
- Adwt0125, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Witch Tree in Minnesota should definitely be on this list!
