- roguenkatz, on 02/22/2009, -15/+50Yeah! Those darn workers! How dare they actually want to be able to afford to be able to live a decent life with a house, a family and food! If they wanted to strike it rich they should have come to America and become a corporate CEO. Now THAT'S hard work.
- shortsellit, on 02/23/2009, -8/+40At least the Irish still have balls
more than I can say for the US, and myself included. - Harboggles, on 02/23/2009, -5/+23Maybe they should stop charging people 21% tax for everything.
- holzp, on 02/23/2009, -1/+15It was a million man march but unfortunately they had to walk by the pubs first.
- DeathJux, on 02/23/2009, -2/+14EUNUCHS UNITE FOR ECONOMIC PROTEST!
- ContrabandR, on 02/23/2009, -0/+11See Ireland is different than America.
In America hundreds of thousands could get up to protest - but they are corralled into a nice non threatening area, and the protest is a one off so it has no affect.
The Irish keep on doing it until something happens, they have balls.
Turns out the Irish are just as screwed as us, but at least they seem to be doing something about it - I wouldn't be surprised if they get out of this mess before America does. - gemlarin, on 02/23/2009, -5/+14Why are Americans not protesting the handling of the economy, or picketing the Banks that got us into this mess in the first place? Why are Americans so damn complacent?
- spunalot, on 02/23/2009, -1/+10Wait Ireland just lowered Business taxes this should make the economy boom. (according to the GOP)
- j0en, on 02/23/2009, -3/+12Yes the Hubris of wanting to live a better life.
- shortsellit, on 02/23/2009, -2/+10All we care about is Christian Bale or George Pitt, or whoever the deuce they are. Thats why.
- Siriquelle, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8up tipp!!
- hebejebelus, on 02/23/2009, -1/+8Woo, it's us, the Irish.
- rozlovesben, on 02/23/2009, -3/+10dugg for the Irish.
- camilos007, on 02/23/2009, -10/+16banning incandescent light bulbs is an asinine move according to you?
You're one of those conservative jackasses that doesn't believe in global warming aren't you. Go back to your cave Limbaugh! - BloodWenis, on 02/23/2009, -5/+11What do you mean the government can't just make millions of jobs appear? Cause I swore I heard Obama say he was going to do that lots of times....
- jayjayjoni, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5Amusingly enough, it's a conservative regime in power.
- Alberts82, on 02/23/2009, -0/+5WOW, what an *****
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5Really, they should have all gone collectively to the bar.
- holzp, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5When I see people like you I say to myself, "Who is that guy? I don't know him at all."
- aufte, on 02/23/2009, -4/+8You sir, are an idiot.
- DrewPeacock, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4It's just kind of ironic that this protest really is exactly that, except for the ***** part. Although I'm sure that out of a sample of 100,000 people, several thousand of them are actually *****. So maybe the ***** part is not an exception.
- StephenCIreland, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4in all fairness the protest was a bit of a sham, it was made by civil servants who complain about having to take pension levys despite the fact that they also have 100% job security and most arent needed , the civil service is overstaffed.
the protest was also hijacked by the waterford crystal employees who lost their jobs and there are neumerous photos of small pockets of violence against these waterford crystal employees tryign to steal the media attantion, - bluesman3535, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5Because the economic "enemy" is vague and it takes some serious study to absorb the complexities involved. Monetizing, or funny money had over the years infected the lending process by skewing real values and just like local property taxes, came to depend on the very highest estimates or speculations. In essence the whole banking system had become a pyramid scheme. Health care costs however could not be hidden and soaked up any extra money most families would be putting aside for the future in banks. So banks held properties and very little cash. Once banks had less cash in accounts they relied on property values, which were high for a lot of years. The government foolishly went off the gold standard decades ago which over time obscured the real US Dollar value. Various media try to pin it on bad mortgages alone, which is not very accurate because it's an error to assume property values are stable at their high point. Also, the Banking and Insurance industries have had a lot of laws passed in their favor.Combine this huge bank 'ponzi type" scheme with massive job outsourcing, fuel ups and downs, wasteful wars funded by China which we owe them for, food and health costs climbing, credit being retracted or denied, and people are just too exhausted to protest one particular issue of focus. Massive unemployment which seems likely could change the complacency you now perceive.
- mikeymondavi, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4I am, but i hate Limbaugh as i dont get my debate on with gluttonous religious junkies
- igyigyigy, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4Careful now.
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4I thought of fiery redheads with milky white complexions.
- Vesuvias, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4They drink the good stuff that's why... liquid courage is a wonderful thing.
- StarFingHipster, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4And the lord said, that shallt not piss of the Irish. Amen.
- Vesuvias, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3To think... I will be in Ireland this summer... should I expect a lot of angry Irishmen in the pubs? I guess nothing a little drowning in Guiness can't fix
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -7/+10I am sure that a protest will make jobs just appear. Dont people know that the government does not have a magic wand that they can create jobs with.
If you do not have a job then start your own business. If you are working for someone else you are probably making someone else rich - siggyfawn, on 02/23/2009, -4/+793% of americans are still working. 90% are still paying their bills. It's really not that big of a deal. market corrections happen, its called savings.
- igyigyigy, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3Nah, but the pubs are slowly but surely pricing themselves out of the market for 'things to do in the evening'.
It's gotten to the point where I can drink 4 beers in a pub, and get a cab home for about €40, whereas if i invite some friends over and drink beer we bought in the supermarket, we can go through about 40 of the same brand beers and order a pizza for the same money,.. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3I was really hoping for some witty commentary on either of those subjects.
- beloitpiper, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3The Irish have a good track record of protesting governments.
- indiegrodge, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3You will be lucky if there are any pubs left open!
- Totz83, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3You ! hate ! english ! too ! ?
Learn to ***** grammar, ***** - Shazbuckle, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2Come to south dublin, or any area with high prosperity.
You'll be pleasantly surprised. We won miss world a couple of years back - snerge, on 02/23/2009, -1/+3dream on :P
- TheBanditKing, on 02/23/2009, -3/+5There's been a wave of protests in Dublin recently, its widely considered the current party in government are inept and have over and over again made terrible decisions. Thats what people are protesting against.
Here are some pics from a recent student protest in the city against the possible reintroduction of college fees
http://picasaweb.google.com/kavanadb/StudentFeesPr ... - Nate642, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2Ireland has had some of the lowest corporate tax rates in the industrialized world and their economy has grown to have one of the highest GDP's per capita partially because of it. I was unaware they cut them again recently. I suppose it can only help, but they already have one of the lowest rates in the region if not the lowest.
Although their low corporate taxes have helped them a lot Ireland like many places is still being hit hard by the recession. - PopcornDave, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2Protesting is wonderful for getting your message and anger out, but without some solutions from someone the protests are a masturbatory exercise.
- 4NDr01D, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2plus
sales tax
gas tax
estate tax
death tax
all in all US spends about 40% on taxes
and we dont even have free health care !!! - fugazied, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2he is right though, the nature of 'employment' has been shifting over the last 2 decades. There are numerous papers about it, try googling. Basically governments widen what they term employed to include people who earn so little they are below the poverty line, people working 10 hrs a week, estimates for people doing seasonal work (which are usually incorrect). Governments do this so their employment stats don't look so bad. A lot of people are employed yet earn so little they can't buy a home, can barely afford rent, bills and something to eat. Actually you can read about it here http://www.shadowstats.com/article/54
- verytasse, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2I have travelled to Ireland almost annually from 1979 onwards, and saw such an explosion in 1984 continuing until just 2007..at which point Dublin looked exhausted and overbuilt and it seemed like everything had reached its zenith but still there was pushing to the next level. I didnt go last year...but I just recall seeing how high priced things I had bought before were, due in part to the dollar's weakness and also the Celtic Tiger...
- lonmoer, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2irish miracle my ass
- vault, on 02/23/2009, -1/+3Japan has the highest in the world and they're not in good shape, either.

- jhandfield, on 02/23/2009, -2/+4So is this like the typical American march on Washington in which the actual number is 1/4 to 1/8 of what's quoted?
- akula89, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2..and what % is US income tax for an average earner? just out of curiosity
