A new way to control R/C planes! watch!
video.google.fr — This guy developed a camera that mounts onto the cockpit of a remote control plane and transmits to a headset worn by the flyer. Makes flying awesome!

- fizzyalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Slightly better quality, another video by the same person:
http://video.google.fr/videoplay?docid=-2237947353453839215&hl=fr- junkmail02, on 10/12/2007, -25/+5i kept thinking he was saying video google but then i realized he was saying video google. big difference.
- junkmail02, on 10/12/2007, -26/+4*****, i meant video goggle the second time. didn't catch it during the edit time. go ahead and digg me down, i messed up. sorry.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -12/+7If this video was more high res.. like HD and had professional editing then the music would be fine, but it doesn't work like this.. mute button how I love thee. (the original link, not the one above)
This insanely cool. It doesn't seem new and I'm sure it's been done plently of times before but this guy got some serious height and distance and to do it with VR goggles is just brilliant.
PLEASE make this commercially available. This is the only think that would make buying an RC plane for several hundred worth it. Personally I'd rig an egg dropping mechanism Tom&Jerry style. - TheBigBad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like this video better as it has a short clip showing the camera moving in conjunction with the goggle setup. Here's one with the same setup on an R/C car. Pretty cool.
http://video.google.fr/videoplay?docid=6166899396954505345&hl=fr - fredsterss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13my god this is so insane. i would buy one IMMEDIATELY if he made them for order. Does anyone speak french?!
- LiThiuMElectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i speak french and actualy all the location in the video is 1hours from where i live :P
- MobbyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Make the video transmitter an Amateur Radio ATV transmitter and this could be really cool for public service events! Get a bird's eye view of a race/marathon as well as maybe a look at a flood area.
*Puts on his ham radio wish list*
de KB2MOB - n1qaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7that was just about the best I have seen for video off an rc. the way it tracks head motion is awsome
- n1qaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yep, much better. I think the concerns about people getting motion sickness are unfounded, well mostly. anyone that has experience with flightsims might have a leg up just because its very much like that. I know, the headset will add that much more realalistic motion to the experience, But I expect that unless you have never flown before you wont have a problem. I so want one.
- juanotejano, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Makes flying awesome? When flying around like superman isn't enough for you, you can have a ***** bird's eye veiw from your dumb rc plane.
- figvam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are more links to the videos as well as an extensive discussion with the author here:

- eksmith, on 10/12/2007, -21/+2gooooood grief guys.
- nwshc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56I wonder how many nude sunbathers you can catch with that ;)
- egbert, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5People have been doing this for years. There have been systems with cameras at the wingtips for a stereo view.
- Joeytg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I know they have had cameras on planes for years. All have been fixed on the wings and such but this one looks to move as he turns his head independent of the heading of the flight. If that is the case then that would be just like being in the drivers seat.
- netdroid9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Awesome. Simply awesome.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Me wants..
- bashar129, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Now all he has to do is strap some missiles to it and sell it to the government.
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What makes you think the government hasn't had this for several years prior to the hobbyists?
- MobbyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Someone beat ya' to it. It's called The Predator.
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So the pedos from Myspace have camera planes now? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!
(Yes, I know what you're talking about)
- OrlyonokEaglet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Oh man, unbelievable, simply stunning. This is probably better than any VR system.
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Digg down, replied to wrong post.
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2Digg down, replied to wrong post.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -48/+2That stuff has been around for ages..but never practical.
No periferal vision = re-kitting a plane most of the time, and no depth perception doesnt help.- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Someone has sand in their vagina...
- jon3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Dugg down because he sounds like some whiney R/C plane snobb - but he makes a good point about depth perceptions.
Maybe if you used 2 cameras, and transmitted the video signal independently to each eye, you could get some level of depth perception using the goggles. How sweet would that be?
- Esstee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Outstanding technology!
People are right about camera mounting being around for some time now, however this is the first time that such a setup proves usable under the circumstances. Great video and great share! +++ - JimGardner1973, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I WANT ONE!
- baxtermadux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24cool video, ***** awful song
- zengame, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Awesome! This is really "Dream Come True".
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Two cameras, stereovision, full 3d view. It would be stunning.
- junkmail02, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7why stop there? get 5 speakers and you got surroundvision ;)
- zouden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Binocular vision only helps for nearby things (within a few metres). You wouldn't notice a difference in this situation.
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah fair enough.
Bit of a daft suggestion now I think about it.
Maybe in some situations, such as buzzing some unsuspecting nearby friends. Not in enough circumstances to warrant the cost.
Silly geek. - nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zouden
"Binocular vision only helps for nearby things (within a few metres). You wouldn't notice a difference in this situation."
Unless you had the cameras further apart than human eyes are - then the differences in distance of more distant objects becomes more pronounced (if your head gets bigger, it's like the world gets smaller)
- thepctech, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5I want to dig this more then once, once for thr awesome concept, and once for the Star Trek song!!!
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Star Trek song? Enterprise was not a part of Star Trek. I was never really into Star Trek and even I refused to watch that steaming pile of ***** based on the storyline inconsistencies.
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1NERRRRRRRDS!!!
/its called a mute button. - LiveWire530, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I just thought it was an aweful song... The fact that you are debating which startrek episode it came from is just terrible.
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It didn't come from any episode, it was the theme song for Enterprise.
- Tilneys, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Just beautifull.
- prax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Done before or not I enjoyed the video.
- starquake, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'm easily carsick. So it might make me throw up :P
Cool anyway! - paulryan21, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I want one - very bloody cool !!!!
- sucresemoule, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Awesome, but why do we always have to listen to some cheesy music or some hardcore noise ?
- kevsedg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Yes to this. Mute mute mute.
- crash331, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I believe the reasoning behind this is because it was used on Star Trek.
- mjpatey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I thought the music was pretty effective. It sounded lofty and buoyant, like flying. It's not the usual techno crap that gets put behind these things by default.
- gamerage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is like real life Team America with realistic music and everything.
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hallelujah, PRAISE JESUS!
- christianboutin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Love this. Nice to know this is now possible with relatively low-cost stock parts. This helps convince me to buy an RC plane, which I've wanted for a while.
- reknaps, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hes got one where he flies around the F1 track in montreal.
I've got a video camera attached to my plane. Its hella fun.
I'd love to have it move around like that, but thats too much money and time. - sdub, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6Gayest song evar
- GreatDrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm learning to fly at the moment and have a pretty good sim setup at home: X-plane for realism; FlightGear for freedom to move my head in the plane using a mouse which really helps with flying circuits. I have also tried MSFS 2004 and the first time I used it I did a perfect take off, perfect circuit and a perfect landing so it is clearly unrealistic :-)
Anyway, this thing looks fab. There is a real sense of being in the plane. Being able to move your head and look all around naturally is cool. To get this level of realism from a sim you would need to have a similar VR helmet but it still isn't going to do the graphics as well as real life and also there is a real chance of crashing this thing so I suspect you would take it much more seriously.
Very cool. - nypix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I gotta get me one of these /Captain Steven Hiller
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Great idea, too bad the camera is on top it should be underneath like the ones you see on military drone aircraft.
- Pie_Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think that this thing would make me really sick.
- Sailen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does anyone have a mirror that works? i get an error loading all of those links
- Wordtrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think the people commenting on how it would make them sick have the right idea. I've flown (ok crashed) RC planes many times and part of what makes it tricky is the "not inside the cockpit"ness of it all. But if you're view is moving and you're not, you're likely to get motion-sick. Also, if the plane is flying straight and level, or easy slow banking, you're not going to be TOO bad, but if the plane is doing anything fancier (even simple loops and rolls) I suspect most people will have their brain rebelling because the body won't be experiencing what the eyes/mind are. Not to say I wouldn't love to try it out (may help my successful flights to crashes ratio), but it probably would make most of us a little sick.
- yeehawjared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RC-CAM has a huge community devoted to wireless A/V in all kinds of applications
http://www.rc-cam.com/index.htm - cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's things like this that make me feel like a little kid again.
Just think, now you can have aerial photography in your indie films for cheap.
Oh, and the music isn't that awful, but Van Halen's "Dreams" would have been a better choice. :) - ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you want the highest quality small-camera I have ever seen get the "PC823XS" from www.supercircuits.com (You will have to call, it's not on their website yet)
Granted I haven't done R/C stuff; I have used many different small camera's and know you get what you pay for. The above camera is FOV is 120degree's corner to corner, 90degree's left to right, and 75 degree's up and down. It has 470 lines of resolution (DVD quality) is color, and has a low light rating of 0.05 LUX. This means it can still see color in very low light without any IR assist.
Supercircuits also sells all the wireless stuff you would need.
I am not affiliated with Supercircuits, I just happen to be a long time customer. - philz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmmm... I think I'd use it to shock golfers (GTA style!)
- adrianguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that was way cool.
- soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3RC helicopters have be doing this for a while for such things as aerial photography. The headsets have also been around for a while. But, I've never seen the camera gimble hooked up to respond to the pilots head postion, like the helmet/gun system on the AH-64, so it gets a digg from me. I've always wanted a system like this. I'm suprised it took so long for someone to make one.
- cletustboone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm a huge fan of R/C planes and it's cool what this guy has done with the mounted camera and the goggles and what have you, but the music in this video makes it nearly unwatchable. They should inter-cut footage of a back lit Richard Marx releasing doves for maximum vomit inducement. I've got faith in my heart that I will be watching this with the sound off.
- swordedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously Cool
Makes it cheap to get very good photo's of office buildings, houses etc from the air.
The music is theme from enterprise. - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1As incredibly cool as this is, you need some pretty strong microwave radiation to receive a signal from that far away. That guy's gonna fry his brain.
- brenonymous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoa
- TheBowerbird, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Technical Genius, Musical Idiocy.
- tardpicard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1where's your "faith of the heart"?
- Sculptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The credits mention the iglasses are discontinued but that tech is always sprouting and dying. Where there is a will, there IS a way. Very cool stuff.
- qbelek2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the gyro idea to move the camera is great + the video has some nice music (usually there is some loud "rock" music)
- qbelek2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2whups! :P
I was commenting that video:
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/remote-flying-with-vr-goggles-and-a-camera-202964.php
the link from there brought me here and I thought that this is the same video, but one that digg leads to has that star trek music ;-|
- qbelek2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2whups! :P
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it cost $1000-$1500 for this setup? I'm still drooling though. http://paperlined.org/product_searches/video_plane.html
He's got a little better videos posted to their forum... http://www.rc-cam.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=1066&st=0 - golgotha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the applications are limitless!
Mount on a r/c jet and fly ahead of your car on scouting missions for highway patrol speed traps...
build a r/c with some carrying capacity and move drugs across the border (just drive across with this thing in the sky somewhere)..
be a six figure income assassin! load one up with explosives and just fly it into a target during a speech or otherwise.
would i do any of these things? hell no and i don't condone it.. but the possibilities... - channi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that's really awsome. I really would buy something like this :)
