- n8dawg87, on 10/12/2007, -78/+25I really like the creative way he plays the guitar and I like the music but I don't find it overly impressive or "The Best Acoustic Guitar Solo I've Ever Heard".
- Nitrodist, on 10/12/2007, -112/+7"I've" idiot.
Go die in a fire. - dignation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46I find it impressive the way he plays both rhythm and lead parts.
- gregs2500, on 10/12/2007, -28/+10Yeah, not the best, but it's a really great song! That one's going in my iPod for sure.
- jesushouston, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12For more guitar with rhythm and lead parts, you may want to check out Robert Johnson, who was doing it about a century ago.
- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62I just stopped in here to see what the guitar/music know-it-all types would have to say when they tried to knock this guy. I'm seeing the usual two-types:
1) The uninformed ones who completely knock on it and appreciate none of it.
2) The half and halfs that want us to think that they are insightful enough to acknowledge one or two neat qualities of this guy's playing style, but remind us that there are other better/cooler/more difficult/technical things that he could be doing.
Anyone who watches this should agree that it is an excellent talent working there. - Tamriel, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5Don't be such a cynic dude! That was really impressive. Everyone loves hearing a riff with some good harmonics, but that was over the top.
- thetanbark, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8This guy is a fingerstyle guitarist, much like Michael Hedges. One guy that is amazing to watch play is Andy McKee. Just listening to the tracks, remember he is a one-guy show! http://www.myspace.com/andymckee2
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Since people are talking about playing multiple parts, check out the Chapman Stick. It's an instrument entirely based around tapping and is specifically for playing multiple parts at once. Very fun instrument.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6joshjoneswas: People are coming in to say "That was cool, but xxx does y better" because the headline was "Best Acoustic Guitar Solo I've ever heard"
If people didn't post stupid titles like that, people wouldn't come to disagree. The title "Great tap technique guitar solo" would have gotten my digg.
I enjoyed it thoroughly, and the guy's got great technique, but he's no SRV
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WZZyv_UAApo
Anyway, you forgot type three: The dorks who have to come in and generalize all the other posts into a couple of narrow categories in an attempt to make them look "better than the trolls" - hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Anyone who watches this should agree that it is an excellent talent working there."
Well, I'm sorry I'm a nobody simply because I'm too stupid to know great guitar technique from a hole in the wall. I honestly have little basis with which to judge. I feel like those cavemen in that insurance commercial! - Herolint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I didn't find it the best either. I liked this one better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZTziYivOLA&mode=related&search=guitar
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3My Grandfather clock sounds better.
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@Nitrodist
What the crap are you talking about? - themcman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree, but that title brings a hell of a lot more readers.
- utubevideos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out similar amazing utube videos: http://utube-videos.blogspot.com

- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Holy Smokes!
I don't know about the best guitar solo I've ever heard, but that is BY FAR the best guitar solo I've ever SEEN.- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4watch out eric clapton
- joeysafe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Entertaining, but Mr. Clapton certainly has nothing to worry about. It's a nice variation from more traditional guitar-ing, but perhaps most people play guitar a certain way because that's how it usually works best. This guy has mastered his art form, but there are plenty of fantastic acoustic guitar solos by Mr. Clapton, for example, that overall are better. This guy is great, but this song isn't the greatest. Just my two cents. Well, three cents with tax. But that's all paid for with advertising, so its free for you...
- blakemara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I'm jealous too
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13not the best, but DAMN good!
- kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -30/+5Looks awesome, sounds cruddy.
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gee, I guess if it isn't on MTV and doesn't have a bumpin' beat, it's no good, eh?
Geez, if you don't like it, close the video and go away.

- lefthome, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Some nice parts, but everytime he does the full string mute, it throws the rhythm off for me.
- rocjoe71, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Yes! It really chokes the piece. I could hear a melody, but it just wasn't very musical.
- adaptable, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Check out Tuck Andres (of Tuck and Patti). He does a rendition of Europa that is breathtaking. Also, check out Australia's Tommy Emmanuel. Both these guys are stunning solo guitarists.
- fetusface, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1-1 for using the word 'breathtaking'
- usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9neat technique, not really the best solo though... check out stream by tim reynolds(I dont think the guitar can be humanly played any faster than he does)
- JiMiThInG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was really hoping someone would mention Tim Reynolds. For my buck he is the most entertaining acoustic player out there right now. However this guy is very good, and the video was quite fun to watch.
- joltjake, on 10/12/2007, -89/+4this kid is a bitch, plus, he is cheating by holding the guitar the wrong way. I'm not impressed.
- zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28cheating? how do you cheat when playing a guitar?
- solidsmoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Cheating? If holding a guitar that way provides an advantage, everyone should do it.
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Dont hate, appreciate
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yeah I said the same thing when Hendrix picked up the guitar to play it with his teeth... that's clearly cheating.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Skill. Pure Skill
- ASoggyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3misclick, mod down
- grat2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And drugs!
- zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Kinda reminds me of Kaki King.
- ASoggyWaffle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i was thinking the exact same thing!
- CDRaff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2As was I, when I saw him holding the guitar like a dulcimer, I told my wife "he must play like Kaki King, and I was right!
- maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My thoughts exactly. This is guy is good too.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -31/+2Annoying wanking. Not really impressive as much as "Watch me noodle with finger tapping for 10 minutes." The only reason it sounds special is because that acoustic has nice tone.
- ZerozenOnes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The only way you'd sound like you know wtf you're talking about would be a discourse on annoying wanking....
- IanMcGreene, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Wow, I second the title of the article, this is the most impressive sound I've ever heard form a single acoustic guitar. Amazing!
- MephistoX, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4John Petrucci can do better.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2Paul Gilbert!
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2What can't he do!?
- gzim, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Hell's yeah!
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You can't even compare Petrucci to this guy. They're from two different schools of thought. I doubt Petrucci could do as good as that guy can with a fingertapping acoustic song and I'm sure this guy can't do a metal song as good as Petrucci.
That song is not the best I've heard at all though. There are far better acoustic fingerstyle guitarists out there such as Michael Hedges and Justin King just to name 2.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Sort of like acoustic techno..
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was thinking the same thing. There are a lot of similarities to progressive house.
- Krasnichuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah kinda weird like that isn't it...
- chinocochino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2sort of a les claypool meets jeff healy!
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4definitely one of the best I've heard. I've never seen anyone play a guitar that way before either, some real talent there.
- spisska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is a very similar technique as that used by Stanley Jordan -- a jazz guy who's probably most famous for playing two guitars at once. It's quite an amazing thing to see.
This guy's impressive, but the 'best solo evar!' it is not. (It may be the best that gregharmon has ever heard, but that just means there's plenty of good music out there for him to discover.)
Still anything that involves real people playing real instruments, particularly in fresh and innovative ways, is a good thing in my book.- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Props to Stanley Jordan, one of the most talented finger tappers alive...
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Definitely inspired by Michael Hedges. It's not the best guitar solo I've ever heard by a longshot but it is pretty good. I'd say Justin King deserves that title IMHO. Look him up if you're interested. He has a few videos floating around the web.
- FreeiPodGuy.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Another great guitarist proficient at tapping is the 9-fingered Phil Keaggy. http://www.philkeaggy.com/
- Phomeister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My first impression was it was spectacular and amazing..but after watching and listening all the way through.. I agree with joltjake.. Doesn't seem like what he's doing is too amazing..just a bit different.
- drumman4ever, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you want to see more like that - Look at the "Explore More Videos" at the right hand side.
More videos - quite impressive.
Maybe not THE BEST I've ever heard... but I love the style! - daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Pretty cool for a while, but it's only just decent. Check out Justin King, anothing slap guitarist.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6NA9nd4Fgs&search=justin%20king- chaser324, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow...just wow...
- dignation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1May not be the best I've ever heard, but undoubtedly the best I've ever SEEN.
- WickedOwl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you like this style of guitar, check out Rhett Butler. I saw him for the first time when he opened for Eric Johnson in Dallas a few years back and he blew my mind. His CDs are great, but he must be seen live to fully appreciate his talent.
http://www.rhettbutler.org/ - thenole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sounds a lot like kaki king & don ross
- MyDocuments, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sounds like 'the books / the lemon of pink' (aka really good stuff)
- broknman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Tim Reynolds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sBINwQmwHA&search=tim%20reynolds- david76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Have you ever seen Tim do a live mix using a digital 8-track recorder? It was one of the most impressive things I've seen. Well, seeing Moby do something similar was also pretty cool.
- Milamber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Very interesting... certainly different.
I still think that the best guitarist I have ever seen is probably Tommy Emmanuel. It's not just the fact that he makes it sound like that there are two people playing (seriously) but the fact that he obviously enjoys doing it!
Check him out here playing the bass and rhythm parts of two Beatles songs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYzajpeAWuA&search=tommy%20emmanuel%20beatles
Other tracks I would recommend for instant impact are Guitar Boogie and Tall Fiddler :) - freedumbfrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think everyone's mentioned the originators of this style - so here's another guy who's really good at it: Ben Lacy. He plays rhythm, lead, and percussion all at once on his guitar. Check the downloads section - clip of him doing Zeppelin's Kashmir!
http://www.benlacy.com - Delphion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1he's essentially playing a guqin here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hero_guqin.jpg - shredswithpiks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1besides a list of other guitarists that are pretty good, is anyone going to contribute some worthwhile comments?
This is a pretty awesome way to go about playing an accoustic guitar, especially because it doesn't even sound like a guitar. Not to insulting, but this feels like 8-bit nintendo musics, and I love it.
Anyone check out this guys other videos? He's a FANTASTIC flamenco player... definitely the most unique acoustic sound I've heard in forever. - idmfx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Check out the other videdo called Percusienfa on his YouTube profile. It's similar and it's pretty sweet too.
- GabeUtsecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow. usually "impressive" solos are totally non-musical.
I don't want to be that person who comes in and says "this is *****," Technically, it's not incredible or anything -- he is using an open tuning and using tapping -- but musically, it's very nice, and that is all that matters. Being an incredible technical player isn't important. It's merely a novelty (just like extreme technical ability in any art). - SpacePope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not to be a one upper to all of you mentioning other musicians but if anybody's interested in two handed tapping, you should check out Bob Zabek, he's got some stuff on youtube and on his site. This guy was really good, especially since it's really freaking hard to even do one handed tapping that sounds good on an acoustic, but I still prefear Zabek.
- illi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1reminds me of a guy called preston reed who plays a similar style of guitar. Enthralling to watch and mesmerising to listen to live.
- joemarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey! It reminded me of Preston Reed too!
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm sure this will get down dugg like crazy but digg, get out more!
There so many musicians out there doing wonderful things in music - making new and interesting sounds and creating beautiful moments.
Flashy technique is one thing but it has lost its emotional appeal for me - but a new and interesting sound will always be great experience, like a new and interesting food.
If this is new and interesting to you then that's cool. But even if it is, go hear more music in your community. If this is is the best acoustic guitar solo I've ever heard then I'd be living a shallow musical life.
Remember that improvisation isn't just about taking the spotlight, it's about leaving space for other musicians, and it's about the way musicians interact with each other. - crazyjeff0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Keller Williams would school this guy in a solo, while looping beatbox, 2 other kinds of guitar and him singing.
John Petrucci would eat his soul.
But he is pretty talented! - johnnyrotten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You guys make me feel so old. I remember seeing Stanley Jordan doing this kind of playing on TV when I was a teenager.
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think Pat Metheny takes the prize when it comes to anything relating to amazing guitar solos.
Check out his cover of Norah Jones' "Don't Know Why" on a Manzer baritone guitar here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9M3LQMS5ICo&search=metheny
And that's one of the less impressive songs IMO. - cjpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is rather well done. I like how he used the instrument to play a full band (percussion, accompaniment, and melody).
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For more amazing Solo Guitarists, check out (and I'm sure others have already mentioned a few of these):
Michael Hedges (somewhat of the forefather of the genre)
Justin King (definitely the flashiest)
Kaki King (my personal favorite)
Leo Kottke
All have videos up on YouTube last I checked. There is a whole world of amazing solo acoustic guitarists, and it's unfortunate that so many of them are slipping my mind at the moment. - kzos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This work reminded me a lot of a few Justin King (mentioned above) vids I'd seen floating around the Internet. Specifics being "Knock On Wood" and "Larivee", linked respectively below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6NA9nd4Fgs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd19j5-7NB4 - reed311, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1It was pretty good, however I when I attended Berklee there were guys that could play that same style and blow him out of the water.
- stormbringer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yeppper lots like Michael Hedges... too bad he's no longer with us. Another great talent who's life got cut short. Lord only knows what heights Michael may have reached. Also... if you want to see a great tap artist... albeit electric... Joe Satriani rocks. Also Eddie Van Halen does pretty good tapping with Eruption!
- perlfu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0For the record, Petrucci could do just about anything, that guy is a mutant. He's not just Metal, he does jazz/blues/alt pretty much any genre. You should check out some of his solo stuff. Anyway, this is definitely an awesome solo.
- linus7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1More by the artist...
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=erikmongrain - DeadevilFrog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Impressive technique, incredible sound, and an awesome ability to compose a work. The piece pushes ahead, the talent is almost an after thought. Awesome!
- JigsawX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Rather like this one myself :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgmYNi5Nnsk&search=Steve%20Howe - tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0He doesn't use the tapping method (he plays with his fingernails), but DO check out John Butler's "Under An Indian Sky" acoustic instumental song. Very moving.
