One of the coolest movies I have ever seen watch!
heroda.com — This guy took a regular digital SLR camera and created a series of time lapse sequences and edited them together to music. Some really cool shots!

- rgodfrey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21It's not the coolest movie ever but it's pretty neat. Is there a page where he talks about his technique?
- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+77People who liked this movie should look at this one shot in LA. It was made with a DSLR too. I think you will find that the editing and photography are a lot more compelling:
http://599productions.com/TimelapseLarge.html - ohhhL3ThaL, on 10/12/2007, -34/+13one of the most opinionated titles I have ever seen.

his server is not going to like it though. - hammydude, on 10/12/2007, -38/+8Youtube link anyone? I hate quicktime...

Wow, LA almost looks... appealing in that video. Not the gravitational abyss that so many music writers have lamented about in songs for so many years. - brecasx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@Radiant
The LA one was cool aside from the ridiculous url right down the middle. Why would any "artist" ruin something that cool for publicity? - cpbrown, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6@ RadiantBeing
That movie is probably better edited, but much less soulful in my humble opinion - RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@dclowd9901, I had the same reaction. That guy made LA look good--and totally different from how I've ever seen it on TV or film. Of course the only LA I know comes from 1940s detective novels.
@brecasx, He probably doesn't want people ripping off scenes. I think it still works as publicity though since you can clearly see that it's very good stuff.
@cpbrown, I like the cool elegance of the 559productions one, but as you say, it's a matter of opinion. - gnark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3another digital slr movie to check out:
http://wearemilk.com/manquer/ - oxyrubber, on 10/12/2007, -25/+10Please don't post to Digg with crappy general titles like this one. It may seem awesome to you, but the title is useless for me until I click through.
And for the record, no I didn't watch the movie (yet). I can't play QuickTime movies on my Linux box.
At least make an attempt to describe what this links to.
Perhaps:
"Fantastically vivid time lapse video"
"HD Digicam stills create inventive music video" or
"My first music video owns every other on on the internet"
Anything but the title you gave it, which has ZERO description. - Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7It looks like there's an UFO in the segment with the city view.
I love time-lapse. This one wins all :D good music, good images, good arrangement.... I'm happy as can be. - argonaut99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Both 599 and this video are very amazing, great job, and bonus points for being decent quality video and not a crappy youtube link. Extra bonus for letting me save the quicktime source after watching! Video like this deserves high quality.
- impulsiveboy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@oxyrubber
I don't get why people are digging you down over that comment. I totally agree. If it wasn't for being bored at the perfect time, I would've skipped this video. However, I didn't and now I'm getting a few Album Leaf CDs. Time lapse and the mention of cool are more than enough to get people to look without retarded titles, just look at how well the 599 Productions video is being received. - aboyd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"That movie is probably better edited, but much less soulful in my humble opinion"
I agree, cpbrown. The 599 Productions film has a few things missing/wrong. First, their logo is a blemish. It's not that their logo is bad, it's just that it shouldn't be there. Second, their scene of the night sky -- while beautiful, especially with that branchy tree -- conveys none of the motion, none of the "we're a spinning rock in a huge universe" feeling. The other movie nailed that. Third, while the 599 Productions film had shots of planes landing, it was just planes landing. The other film had that scene of the night sky with the plane flying past, and it looked a bit like a firefly zipping through the air. I guess if I had to put a finger on it, I'd say that the 599 Productions film felt like it was about a place in California, while the "coolest movie ever" felt like it was about our place in the universe. - davidod87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5And if you liked the LA one posted above, you might like the 480p version (720P is not available at the moment it seems): http://599productions.com/599/HD%20Media.html
- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3One Diggers Opinion: I hate Quicktime. Always some ***** nag screen to buy or some lame reason why it won't work. It's a piece of *****.
- herculez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You should check out the film Baraka. It's composed entirely of stunning visuals and time-lapse from around the world. I was lucky enough to see it in 70mm, but it should be available through netflix.

- ohvee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6My guess is that it's "The Album Leaf," just like the name of the file.
No idea which song/album though. - ktchpmn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think it could be The Album Leaf. The filename of the movie gives hint to the that and I know that Album Leaf is an instrumental/ambient band so there is a good chance it is them.

I just bought their CD "In A Safe Place" (the song is on that album) about two weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I first heard The Album Leaf on Echoes, a radio program on public radio, http://www.echoes.org Highly recommended (both The Album Leaf and Echoes). - geeko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This seems like a really innovative and inexpensive way to shoot an HD movie. Digital still cameras can take images well over HD resolution, so it makes sense!
Awesome.- zora, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think that the shutter on a SLR is only rated for something like 50-100k images, which is about only 70 or so minutes of film at 30fps....
- EvilPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's already been done.
The film Corpse Bride was shot entirely using Digital SLRs
"This is the first feature to be made with commercial digital still photography cameras (31 Canon EOS-1Ds MARK II SLR cameras with Nikon Lenses) instead of film cameras." - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121164/trivia

- thatgirlismine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Heh, you beat me to the punch. Seriously, Koyaanisqatsi has some great moments. Putting a camera on a twinkie assembly line, crowded escalators, people playing robotron and pacman in the arcades... Great stuff.

What's wrong with "Landscape Time-Lapse Music Video"
You titled it like you were writing for Fox News. - newbietheatre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2There are some really nice shots in there. My favorite would be the first shot of the night time stars. Thumbs up to the creator.
- LoompaOompa, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2what is that flying thing over the city near the end of the movie? it doesn't fly like a plane and it looks like it breaks apart?
- garble7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I saw it too. I thought UFO, but then people will think i'm crazy. I wonder how long the lapse was for that to be in the picture that long.
- AndySomnifac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's an article in Canon Europa CPS newsletter about a couple of filmmakers using this technique to shoot a music video. The article (with the video) can be found at: http://www.cps.canon-europe.com/articles/article.jsp?article.articleId=100261

- t0ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ya just put the camera on a tripod and hit the shutter ever few seconds.
Then in Linux to make the video cd to the dir with your photos and do "convert *.jpg timelapse.mpg".
I'm going to buy an ir remote and make a timer for my dslr camera and do this. I cant keep the camera that still when I hit the shutter button.
I was going to do this with my old point and shoot camera but I forgot the flash was hooked up to the capasitor. My screw driver hit the flash and boom. It hurt like hell :). Blown a chunk of metal out of my screw driver. The camera is now fried. :(

- zlwise, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You use a device called an intervelometer (sp?) Typically you shoot 30fps or 15fps so you set your interval based on how long you want to shoot and how long you want the finished piece to be.
How about this time-lapse piece I shot of music with music:)

everyone should buy their album in a safe place. - anonymouse91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was quite cool. One thing though. I liked it so I tried to download it and for some strange reason, it downloaded at a speed of 6.83MB/s finishing in 2 seconds. Thats the sort of speed you should get on a 100MBPS connection, not my 8MB connection. I checked the file too and it works. Freaky...
- Ath3us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You'd already watched the video, so it was still in your cache.. when you "downloaded it", the work had already been done, so it just loaded straight from memory... :]

- tduser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, my friend Ross who is a film major at San Diego State is the one who made this video, and another friend of mine submitted it to digg. But he spent a few weekends out of a month working on it. It was all shot in the San Diego area.
For all of you who are wondering, he used a Canon Rebel XT with a timer remote (TC-80N3). And then using quicktime pro and automator, he was able to take each frame, resize it to 1920x1080 using automator, create an image sequence out of the 250+ photos, and take it into Final Cut Pro for editing. Some really cool work...the heroda.com site he just used as a file server...the site itself hasn't been updated for over 2 years since he was in high school.
Oh yeah, and the music is by "The Album Leaf" and the song is "The Outer Banks"- krum0786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks!
