One of the best SNL performances ever - Beck watch!
youtube.com — An incredibly original performance where Beck's band is seated at a dinner table playing bottles, plates and glasses as percussive instruments. Don't miss it!

No digg for you. - jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -21/+7It's definitely an incredibly original performance if you have never heard of Stomp (who has also been on SNL)
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I saw beck in concert and they did this bit. He was playing a mellow solo, and they were all eating during it... then this song started and they did this. Beck concert's worth going to.
- Brandons, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Awesome! Beck is great. Nice to see someone doing something original. Hell yes to the harmonica solo (my beat is correct).
- d8cam, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3What's with the lead singer shaking so rapidly? Is he on drugs?
- d8cam, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Don't just digg me down...answer my question:
What's with the lead singer shaking so rapidly? Is he on drugs? He looks like an idiot...

- speedfoot, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38i almost don't remember the days when snl was funny, so long ago. at least the musical performance are still good!
- JacobsMirror, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Assuming they're not lip-synced...
- pflarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I saw him do this in concert in Abq. The act started with with the rest of the "band" sitting around the table while Beck does a solo, unplugged version of "Lost Cause" from "Sea Change". As the unplugged segment continues, the people at the table slowly start adding percussion to the songs, ending with "Clap Hands".
If they had mixed the rest of the concert well (they blasted the bass until you couldn't hear anything else), the whole thing would have been awesome. The show was enjoyable, but whoever was running things in the sound department made it hard to enjoy the music. - alphamerik, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I saw this on TV and thought it was bad. I used to really like Beck. Yes, the puppets are cute, but one of the songs sounded like the beats were stolen from Gwen Stefani, that, and the lyrics sucked, making it very disappointing.
- cmikesell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1You should have caught the episode this was on last week. Hugh Laurie was hilarious and the cast was great. All around great episode.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I was waiting for this to make it to DIGG. Dugg since it was the one time that my wife put down her book to watch an SNL performance.
It convinced me to go out and buy the album.- littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2@UGM2099
"Don't be close minded, if he's making good music (and IMO he still is) there's nothing wrong with being a fan. Remember that he doesn't act like Tom Cruise and is barely vocal about his role in Scientology.”
Well you’re right there. Scientology would be a whole lot better off if they told Tom Cruise to shut the ***** up and go away already.

No, by buying his music or going to his concerts, you're supporting him as an artist. What he does with that money is entirely up to him, even if it involves throwing it away on the "church" of scientology. - chickan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Well maybe he's more of an Easter Sunday Scientologist... or is that a Xenu's Birthday Scientologist.

The Scientologists have a right to believe whatever they want to believe. But let's all at least know what that is.
Ellron (Source) said that the Jewish "I Am" was a hallucination planted by Xenu in the Alien souls after they were killed in the volcanoes and trapped in the sky, later to attach themselves to us. Jesus Christ and ALL other spiritual figures are also "hallucinations."
Scientology IS a mutually exclusive religion.

Corporations don't know what to push, but if the product is
sung by a pretty girl, or a band that conforms to the latest
rock dress code, it's a winner. That's the formula.
When confronted with the challenge that American music
sucks, a more effective response is not to take offense, but
to offer up an example of cutting edge American music.
Is there such a thing? If so, name some names.
The same is true of a Brit criticizing music from America.

- Brandons, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Hey, kind of like you posting an awesome quote from a complete jack-ass just to bash Beck. I mean, the video clip completely relates to Scientology, I can see him worshipping Xenu! You posted your opinions, I posted mine. Have a good day!
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3A Maynard fan! Hell yeah!
- JASPER200, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Not even a fan. Now I think I might listen to more of there work pure genius
- cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Do yourself a favor and get Stereopathic Soulmanure.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like Stereopathic Soul Manure, but that's a bad place to start for a non-fan. The Information and Guero are both pretty accessible and decent summaries of what Beck sounds like. My personal favorites are Sea Change and Midnite Vultures.
- loaff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, go with the tour de force Odelay, the pinnicle of Beck's work IMO. This preformance did include a little taste of Stereopathic Soulmanure when he broke into a version of "One Foot In the Grave"... which rocked of course.
- thomble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The actual title of the album in Stereopathetic Soulmanure (do a Google search) which was realeased almost simultaneously with Mellow Gold and One Foot in the Grave.
I'll add that IMO Beck is hugely overrated. Sea Change seems to be the critics fave, and it will be forgotten (do you ever spin that record?). I think that he's riding on a younger generation of listeners who are thinking "I remember Beck, that's what my older brother/sister thought was cool in the 90s!" But, he's never really made a truly great album, and yes, that includes Odelay. I saw this performance on SNL and thought that it was gimmick making up for a particularly crappy song. No digg. - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think Beck's made very few albums that weren't great. I never like Loser, but I loved Mellow Gold when a friend gave me his copy. I was excited by Odelay from the start because of the Dust Brothers production. They were the producers for the Beastie Boys album Paul's Boutique which is still one of my favorite albums, and their production work worked very well on that album.
Mutations started of slow, but is something I've come back to consistently over time. I immediately loved Midnite Vultures, liked Sea Change which grew into love over the course of a year, and think Guero was criminally underrated.
Beck's definitely not for everyone, but he's one of the artists I find myself listening to the most. I saw his performance here in Austin where he did the same thing he did on SNL, and I loved it (as you can guess, I'm biased). One of the better live performances I've seen lately, and I see quite a few.
I'd always thought it was Stereopathic as well, don't know how I've mistaken that for so long.
- joeyjojo400, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7This was performed in a similar manner during his amazing performance in the Lower East Side back on Oct 22:
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2006/10/beck_angel_oren.html- whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Yeah, this was a staple of the Guero tour. The band would sit down whilst Beck did a few acoustic numbers (he has a huge body of acoustic work - spanning his entire career...not just Sea Change) - they'd eat and drink, usually have bit of banter or veggie fights. Then Beck would play Golden Age (the synth string sounds played by wetting the rim of crystal glasses) before breaking into Clap Hands, which was usually the show opener too - albeit in a full instrumental arrangement.
Beck's currently touring with a team of puppeteers (from Team America) who mimic everything going on on stage and project it onto a screen behind the performers. Also, during the encore they throw on some bear costumes and start stage diving. Totally mental, and great fun. Seen him live 5 times now, and every time it's a new event.
Yeah he's a scientologist, but his music isn't reflective of that at all (contrary to popular belief 'Movie Theme' is about going on tour and 'Exoskeleton' is about the perfect album).
I'm not going to blog spam the comments, so if anyone wants to see pics and videos, you can find my blog in my profile - just search for Beck. And, should you fancy it, my YouTube Channel has some great Beck performances. You can find the links on the contact page on the site.

- Wikifindings, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1I thought everyone was going to boycott SNL ever since people had been forced to remove clips of the CoN-sketch from their websites.
My bad, I forgot the Internet is full of hypocrites...- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14what are you talking about?
- alteal, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1I couldn't make it through the whole thing. It was too annoying.
Annoyance art. There's a market for everything, I guess.
It might sound better with actual percussion instruments. I wonder if they ever thought of that.
Or, is it the infantile beating the table with spoons what the audience identifies with?- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Anything can be used as a percussive instrument...hell, "actual" percussion instruments used to be just animal skin, stretched over a clay pot. Man, closed minds will doom us all, and in some areas of music, already have.
- dalewj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As a percussionist (sp?) for over 34 (oh god im getting old) years now I truely consider that great percussion. Percussion is the art of making music via the the violence of hitting something. That sir, was art
- anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I want to tell you all how funny this is, but I can't think of the words... hand me the bectionary.
- kermithefrog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3how could you call him a scientologist? didn't he deny that last year, while playing the cowbell?
- GabrielS, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Why is Beck a scientologist? Is he a child of scientology?
And why is Danny Masterson a scientologist? Haven't these guys heard of off shore bank accounts? You don't need a church to hide your money. The Church of Banking is much almost as old as organized religion. - DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Why was this original? Hasn't anyone seen lame-ass Stomp or the Blue man group. It's the same thing, but worse.
The Flaming Lips described Beck as a 'diva' on their last tour. I couldn't agree more. Dude thinks he's way more important than he is.- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I disagree with your dislike of the performance, I understand where you are coming from.
Actually, the thing I want to hear more about is what The Flaming Lips had to say about him. I know they were his backing band for the Sea Change tour, and I'd read something that indicated he repeatedly tried to push Scientology onto them. I haven't seen anything directly from Wayne Coyne or anyone else talking about this. Have you found a link or anything that you could send to provide more insight into this? - Brandons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually read that Wayne's comments were taken out of context by the journalist that interviewed him. Beck said in an interview that Wayne is the type of guy that will call out anyone in the room and that's just the way he is. He went on to say that they've talked since and Waynce called it *****.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I disagree with your dislike of the performance, I understand where you are coming from.
- reqage, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I saw this live at Bonnaroo. The marionette dolls were pretty trippy... They also spliced a comedy bit together using the dolls making fun of hippies when the band took a break.
- firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I too, saw this at bonnaroo! And then beck covered a little bit of creep, and then that amazing 28 song set from radiohead! I have the recording of that radiohead show if you haven't gotten it online yet. I was in the front row too, thom yorke threw a glowstick at my friend joey!
- leonwehttam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3i love the one foot in the grave reference in that song :D
- spamtom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Did this a few months ago on Later with Jools Holland.
- Darkfiend, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0You've got to be kidding me... If Beck sucked any harder he would create a black hole from which no talent can escape. I can't believe that people buy, listen to, or even can stand to hear this man. He blows. If you like him, you blow. Seriously.... I would consider putting my head into an oven as far more interesting and useful. It looks like SNL is really hitting rock bottom in the music department. Then again, the show itself isn't exactly impressing anyone these days.
- melcolm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0hey I found a cool site!

go to www.*****.com - h0ward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since it hasn't been explicitly stated yet.. the song is called "Clap Hands" from Guerolito, which is a remix album of Guero
- whiskeyclone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It was also on some Special Edition versions of Guero and the Guero DVD. Early in the Guero tours they'd play Clap Hands twice; once to kick off the show, and once like this video shows. Bootleggers generally call it "Clap Hands: Picnic Version" - and it almost always follows 'Golden Age' when done live.
- theBrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol, it's funny how some people don't get or dislike beck, but the fans are walking encyclopedias.

- luvit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ask these haters why they hate Beck and Scientology. The truth is the psychos want to destroy any body who they think is more poweful than they are because they are afraid of powerful people. The psycho haters are just crazy people and are trying to hide the fact that they are crazy. They are the people you feel bad around because they make you feel bad. That is how you know them, Psychos do more harm to more people ost of the time.
The good people do more good most of the time. Psychos hate people who help other people get better, smarter, stronger, etc. The psychos need to be locked up and that is also why they are afraid to be found out that they are psychos. If we did lock these people up our world would be a much better place to live. Hitler was a psycho. - jakeadams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://youtube.com/watch?v=r_BgalXIOuI
