The Story of 1 - BBC documentary on the history of numbers watch!
video.google.com — After 40 years spent making a career from the completely different, Monty Python star Terry Jones has gone back to basics. The writer and historian, best known for his work with the surreal comedy troupe, presents The Story of 1, a one-off BBC One documentary on the history of numbers in which he merges slapstick, quirky humour and learning.

Everytime I see him I remember him playing Brian's mother, though! "He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!" - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Saw this on the local PBS station a few months ago. Definitely worth a watch. He addresses some things you might never have even considered about numbers. I have an English degree and numbers are my arch enemy, but even I couldn't turn my nose up at this one.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -15/+1Now when they document "0" post it. At that point, it should be interesting.

- LacY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13They talk about "0" in the video extensively... Watched it (at work). It's long, but really interesting and humorous.
- chownrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Saw this on PBS awhile back. Definitely worth a look.
- h00j, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There was a BBC radio show based on this as well that I remember listening to a while back. Quite interesting stuff. Will def give this a watch

- wbreim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7BBC has the coolest documentaries, does anyone know why BBCamerica has such crap programming with a couple of good shows a week?
- LacY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7BBCAmerica seems to only show home/lawn improvement shows....
- harecat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7BBC America is a separate entity from the BBC, as is BBC Prime (the channel that is broadcast in parts of Europe and the Middle East). So they have to buy programme broadcast rights from the UK BBC, as well as other UK TV channels. I guess that BBC America's audience prefers home improvement shows and really old comedies for some reason. BBC UK also seems to sell to the highest bidder or something, which may explain why Hustle for instance (arguably one of the best BBC series in recent years) got on the American Movie Classics channel and not BBC America. (BBC Prime's FAQ page explains this general situation -

it makes sense!
brilliant documentary. - zapco03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6He mentions other animals being able to count to three or four but doesn't say which ones. If they can count to three or four maybe they think in base 3 or base 4.
- omninode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw this on PBS some time ago. Very good stuff. Terry Jones can make anything entertaining.
- DesignEx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is an old story, but a mirror is needed:
