Non-animator creates hand-drawn Wii commercial on notebook paper! watch!
youtube.com — "I made this animation over the past month showing different uses for video game characters using the Wiimote. 700 pages is a lot to hand draw. After Effects, Maya, Flash and more were all used to make this happen. Considering I've never done hand animation before I'm quite pleased with the results." Anyone wishing to contact him may do so at wii@hansv.com- spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27Looks like a clever viral to me.
- junkmail02, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8this really amazing video took him over 80 hours to make
- Francky, on 10/12/2007, -14/+8I think it's normal to think it's viral marketing, But I think that the fact that he refers to revolution in the video and in the song proves that it's not.
We all know that nitendo wants to distances itself from that. Understandably too, how hi would everyones expectation be from a product called revolution ?! lol It would be impossible to live up to. Well unless it was doing IMax resolution and shipped with a terabyte of space with I don't know, 26 controllers could be hooked up at once... then yeah... it would be ok to call it "revolution" hehe... oops, sorry went way of topic there :-P - TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this video looks totally rotoscoped from 3D animation.
- mpax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Totally awesome. Wii fans rejoice!
- ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17That was really cool... job well done.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Nice, amazing what people can do now a days.
- portorikan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Excellent work and the first time I've actually enjoyed the song used.
I'd have Nintendo give it a look.- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The song is "Revolution" by Jars of Clay.
- spankaccount, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5...
A Christian band, maybe it's not a viral. - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@spankaccount - It had to be asked... What difference does it make if they're a christian band, bigot?
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I think he's trying to say it's less likely because they're less known. Which would be true for most Christian bands, except that Jars of Clay did enjoy some MTV airtime in the mid '90s.
- freakytj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Simply creative work!
This was really neat and was quite enjoyable to watch! - eim9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Damn that was sweet. Could make a crazy advertisement also.
Music was decent, but the creativity would catch peoples attention. - aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -26/+2Site down:

- rideroyals, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazing work. Music was alright for me but all blended together well.
- mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -22/+8This guy is ***** lying. Work like that doesn't come out the first time you try to animate. Just the timing alone is difficult to judge if you've never animated before. Thirty frames per second feels a lot longer when you're drawing it than when you see it on screen.
And this non-animator is familiar with After Effects, Maya, and Flash? Right.
Besides that, this video was great.- Mathys, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24Sorry to burst your bubble. Never animated before. Never used After Effects before. Never used Maya before. Used some Flash before. I would love to be lying, but frankly, I have no reason to.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Well mediaphile it just shows that there's people out there more naturally talented and intelligent than you might think.
- pixelsoup, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Yep. I think the title was purposely skewed to pull the page views. This guy has a pretty good knack for animation for someone who's never done it. His quote says he's "never done hand animation". There are many other ways to animate. Maybe he's never pick up a pencil to get the job done (because it takes so freaking long). Well done.
- Mathys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Thanks for all the positive comments everybody. I didn't expect for this to become this widely viewed. This is crazy.
I'm a film student. I've done flash websites before, but little animation. Familiar with the process, but have never actually done any animation before this project.
- Mathys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Thanks for all the positive comments everybody. I didn't expect for this to become this widely viewed. This is crazy.
- benguild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazing work.
- nixonrichard, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5That video reminds me that MY ANUS IS BLEEDING!!!
- mictlanian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don Hertzfeldt owns all.
- SPThom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Good job, Mathys. Regardless of your experience (although please note I do believe you!) this is one of the best examples of viral "fan" advertising I've seen. You capture the spirit of what it seems the Wii will be like, and even your choice of music, between its somewhat eclectic lyrics and the lead-in to "Be A Revolution" is just splendid.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sweeet, nice job
- Spankov, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Non-animator creates hand-drawn Wii commercial on notebook paper!
"After Effects, Maya, Flash and more were all used to make this happen."
Inaccurate.
"I've done flash websites before, but little animation. Familiar with the process, but have never actually done any animation before this project." - Make you mind up. Either you've done none or some.- maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree. If you hand drew it, what did you need Maya and Flash for?
Some of the scenes looked to me like they were rendered in Maya with a 'sketch' output plugin.
Just my guess. Then that would make it CG.
Good nontheless.
- maehem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I agree. If you hand drew it, what did you need Maya and Flash for?
- stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nice, its like the A-Ha videos.
This is the kind of work i'd expect to see on my television.
I really hope that this is taken onboard, perhaps digg can give it a bit of attention to show how good it is to nintendo? - sarin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ Spankov and maehem, Stop being a bunch of sour bastards huh?
Some people just cant take sombody else getting a bit of credit can they.
Fancy showing us what you can do?
To the creator, nice work. - jlgosse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it clearly says he is an animator, just not through hand-drawn images.
Wopee. - n0igz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0moderately cool at best. sorry boss.
- Broccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like to animate and i know that had to take a really long time and alot of hard work. Job well done.
- mylkhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice job
- travishealy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Am I the only one who did the math and to win a $250 Wii, the guy put in 80 hours, equally about $3 an hour?
You'd be better off flipping burgers, and buy the Wii outright. :) - J6stik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nintendo ought to pay that guy and put his animation on TV. That was effing awesome.
- KaserPro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I teach maya to second and thrid year degree students. If they created as good animation first off with maya, I'd be out of a job.
lets get one thing straight. Maya is not friendly. Its arcane and odd, it really confuses the casual user. It confused the hell out of me for the first few months. also with the first three major projects is did with it, i had really saw hands, because i thumped the table so much in frustration.
large parts are rendered using maya's cartoon materials, with the either the pencil outline, or a custom version. Mario looks like it could be hand drawn.
several shots have be composited, possibly in 3D (usng after effects as they said)
They maybe a first time "animator" but they have deffinatly been schooled in the art of graphic design/ digital arts.- Mathys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I appreciate your admiration Kaser, but let me tell you one thing that hasn't been mentioned yet. My use of maya for this project was for nothing other than verifying 3d relations. I did no exporting from maya of any kind. All images WERE hand drawn, and I can show a picture of the stack of pages drew. I used Maya so little, I didn't even figure out how to skin an object. Didn't need to, as that isn't what I was trying to do. That was my only use for Maya.
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're doubtful, go watch the fullsize version at http://wii.hansv.com - you can see the lines on the the paper and the pen marks frame-by-frame.
- CzescToJa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You said it right there in the description " I'VE NEVER DONE HAND ANIMATION BEFORE" Keyword being HAND
"I'm a film student. I've done flash websites before, but little animation. Familiar with the process.."
You're NOT a complete amateur. If you're a film student, you should be very familiar with the process. Good job on the animation, but you don't deserve all of this "It's my first time" attention. - appletalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does it really matter if he is a professional animator or not? The result is awesome, and that's all that counts.
- dudeman88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is my understanding that he did this for a contest to win a Nintendo Wii. Where can I vote; I'd love to help with this guy a Wii.
- mpax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry, but the contest is over.
- dudeman88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did he win?
- Mathys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not exactly. I didn't win a Wii, but I did place... Nineth. 25 dollar gift certificate. It's cool. Had fun, and that's what matters.
- Fragps, on 01/27/2008, -0/+0I guess , Ive never sent the other entries but I think you deserved to win :P
- UnoEfe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know what beat you out, but your work is amazing.
