Kiwi: The cutest (and ultimately saddest) animation you'll see all day. watch!
youtube.com — Sadly, this reminds me of all those people who commited suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate bridge. Thier lives were fraught with misery, as was probably this bird's, with the anguish of not being able to fly. In the end, they got what they wanted. Flight; Freedom.

- xeroskill, on 10/22/2007, -11/+189such a cute movie, im believing that there is a lake at the bottom so its not sad anymore. he just has a long climb back up to do it again.
- therightclique, on 12/11/2007, -3/+1what? there's a thud sound. he's ***** dead.
- kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+148you hear a splat right before it cuts to the credits
- ryzellon, on 10/12/2007, -74/+12The noise doesn't sound crunchy enough to be a splat. Sounds more like a parachute opening.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Or it could have used a wingsuit in conjunction with a parachute :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDMoaDGvwSc - AndreGerber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+60It cannot be a parachue, because he doesn't have a parachute on him at the time of falling. But it is an animation, after all. But it is a splat, otherwise the animator whould not have us looking at a blank screen. He would show us that he survived.
- nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -5/+120@AndreGerber: do you not remember when kiwi pulled all those tools out of nowhere? i'm certain a parachute is plausible :)
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -70/+7Wow.. didn't realize Digg users are so sentimental
I actually thought it's pretty funny - BladeDanger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32This animation is based on a Monty Python segment.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -9/+59a metaphor for the new zealand economy?
- drathosX3, on 10/12/2007, -88/+6...does it cry towards the end?
.... pussy... - jarvuss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98Yes he cries, but is it because he knows what about to happen, or because he's happy to be flying??
- Adamande, on 11/01/2007, -4/+218The bird didn't survive. Saying it did lessens the concept of the story. The Kiwi wanted to fly so much it was willing to die just to experience it once. Doing joyrides while landing safely in a lake strips the wish of its power and renders the movie dead and mindless.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14That has to be one of the cutest, saddest tale I've ever seen.
But am I the only one who thought it would be cool to set this up for humans? With a bungee cord of course. I want to fly too! - banjokazooie, on 10/12/2007, -7/+71Wow. This video made me cry, it was so emotional. It's so sad, but in the end, he really flies... And his entire purpose has been fullfilled. He is finally happy. Thanks for posting this, it changed me.
- tartle, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3If Wile E. Coyote can survive such a fall, then why can't the Kiwi? The poor little guy forgot to put on his goggles, which explains why he closed his eyes and shed a tear.
- hammydude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12his other animation is pretty good also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNu8u_Kpa00
Not as good animation but is still funny/messed up - 1daystay, on 10/12/2007, -25/+2remind me of those with Darwin award, doing stun like that just to die.
would be funny if he get hit by one of the trees. - vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5slightly off topic: Anyone remember the animation posted a long time ago with the soldiers jumping off the plank and splatting on the ground? The scientist took pictures and danced to it frame by frame?
- FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5my dad jumped off the golden gate :(
- aks123, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1This video has special meaning to me, because I had a pet bird named Kiwi who flew away on Sep. 11, 2005. I guess birds with the name "Kiwi" and human tragedies have something to do with each other.
- therightclique, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1what you just said was terrible. and i don't mean that it was sad or offensive. i mean that it was poorly thought out and not at all "something"
- trim17, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Wow... I've seen this movie only once, yet its message is tearing me apart...
Would you take the chance, for one moment, that you could have everything you've ever wanted, dying with no regrets? Would you trade your life for one chance, just one chance, to feel free, to know you'll never be happier?
I can only poignantly contemplate what that kiwi was thinking in its last moments... I'm trying not to cry...- therightclique, on 12/11/2007, -2/+1what is wrong with you?
- Scagli3tti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@ xeroskill
I suppose this isn't the best time to tell you about surface tension... :(
R.I.P. Kiwi- therightclique, on 12/11/2007, -2/+1surface tension of what? he hit the ground.
- Scagli3tti, on 12/24/2007, -0/+1from xeroskill's comment: "im believing that there is a lake at the bottom so its not sad anymore."

- Grovulent, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dony permedi is the animator... will probably go far...
Another film by this person:
http://www.infectiousvideos.com/p/3239 - mblitch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If someone can remix it using Gary Jules's 'Mad World' [currently used in 'Gear of War' commercials] it would be especially potent.
The song can be found on the 'Donnie Darko' soundtrack, though it was originally recorded by Tears for Fears. If you start the animation and the song at the same time (or the song 2-3 seconds after the movie) they sync decently well. - koorlle44er, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I'm all for the idea of pursuing your dreams and pushing yourself to achieve things that others think are not possible, but there is a point where it becomes a squandering of your time here on the planet. You probably have other cool and unique talents you are not developing because you spend all of your time trying to do something you weren't meant to do in the first place. The movie "Rudy" comes to mind. How many years did that moron spend trying to get 15 seconds of time on a football field? What if he would have spent that time and fierce dedication developing some other skill that would actually matter to someone else?

- gregmo, on 10/18/2007, -1/+75That title really captures the video. That was really well done but honestly sad.
- fireflies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+83It was truly awesome, but truly sad. This guy deserves a medal for coming up with such a great storyline. At least the kiwi achieved his dreams.
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Geez submitter, how about a spoiler-free title and description? We can discover these things by ourself.
Great animation though. - klaymen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well if he put a lesser description, a million people would complain that it wasn't descriptive enough. personally i agree that it shouldn't have said so much. but as they say, you can't please everybody.
- Hellsadvocate, on 10/18/2007, -0/+61That was the saddest thing i've seen today. What a great way to end a day.
- yyanri, on 10/18/2007, -10/+73kiwi's are better as fruit..
- djdarco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Kiwis are my favorite fruit. It is sad that the majority of people that I meet don't even know what a kiwi is.
- nahteecirp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Most the people I meet know what a kiwi is (or at least think they do.) "A Kiwi? That's shoe polish right?"
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16so what part of the world are you from to not have kiwi fruits?
(I am genuinley interested, I had no idea that they were apparently uncommon) - eggo, on 10/30/2007, -2/+122Interesting fact of the day: Kiwi fruit also cannot fly.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25In London we saw some of the local students handing out free samples of Kiwi Fruit. So we went up to them and asked what kind of reaction they'd been getting.
They said that everyone hates them!
So we gently explained that you are supposed to _peel_ them first...- AmnestyGenocide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1global.js
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Now that everyone's on the kiwi as a fruit topic. I'd like to say that I proudly eat my kiwi's with the skin on, and get funny looks from people until they try it themselves.
- AmnestyGenocide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1.
- Tyr86, on 10/14/2007, -4/+49Sounds like a a sack of potatoes hitting or a parachute deploying. Not a bird becoming one with the ground.
Of course, I'm not an expert at tossing animals that can't fly over cliffs and recording their sounds.- spanner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ha!
I eat them with the skin on as well. Tastes great :)
If you get a small spear shaped pice of wood near the branch end of the kiwi it means that they were picked green and ripened artificially.
Naturally ripened kiwi, don't have that. (So I am told)
- spanner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ha!
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Reminds me of the wallace and gromit short (I believe one of their earlier or first one) where they take a vacation to the moon with the robot there. Then the robot is all denying them of the moon cheese and tries to attack them. But once he realizes they can give him a ride to earth where he can ski he tries to come with them back but fails. Then he makes his own skis and has fun on the moon till he stops working.
- weizilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7awesome video
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/14/2007, -0/+44I loved how he had tiny wannabe wings.
- JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well, they WERE wings, kind of.... but then again, Kiwis aren't really completely birds...
- incu_vamp, on 11/05/2007, -0/+127a comment from uneasy silence really defined it for me,
"It makes you wonder if that’s really all we humans do: build up our own lives only to really enjoy it for a few short moments."- carmelia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I completely agree with that point.
Everyone is talking about realizing our dreams, but what I see is a bird who can't adapt to its handicap and learn to appreciate life from another point of view.
Still, I love the courage of that bird and it breaks my heart everytime watch the clip.
- carmelia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I completely agree with that point.
- Stephenishere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47RIP Kiwi RIP :(
Great video : / but so freaking sad. - pathy, on 10/14/2007, -2/+56... I really didn't think it'd do anything to me, but then the camera panned and all the trees... Argh. Sad. =(
- gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -8/+41i dont think it's intended to be sad at all. the kiwi follows and achieves his dream. its irrelevant whether he dies or not.
- UCFartstudntJON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43A stunning visual metaphor of the plight of an animation/art major.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -29/+1yeah, i get that same reaction when I eat apple cores

- ohgr, on 11/05/2007, -2/+51Aww even I had to shed a tear for the poor little Kiwi thing. We all have a little Kiwi in us if you think about it.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29Kiwi's are hard to peel, but worth the tasty innards.
- Pudwhack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22you don't need to peel a kiwi, you can eat the skin...true
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Huh, I've never tried that. It's so fuzzy. I'm gonna try it tomorrow.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7who the hell peels them? after reading the comments I have discovered they are apparently an uncommon fruit, but dont you at least have kiwi knives? the ones with the spoon on one side and the knife on the other, you pick em up free here
that or just eat the skin, it just leaves you with a tingly mouth - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I peel them. What's it to ya? Wanna fight about it?
Where is "here"? - nauzilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Oh thank God, I thought I was the only person who ate the skin. I did that at work and everyone around me looked on in horror :(

"but apple seeds contain cianide"
well im not dead yet, and I know people much older then me who have done it their whole lives and still arent dead
oh, and here is australia, ill be waiting for you behind the shed - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I would imagine Kiwis are probably more common in Australia than the rest of the world. No facts to back it up, that's just my guess.
What's more common there? Kiwis, Cherries or Oranges? - greghunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6distrbnce:
How about New Zealand, where they grow Kiwis, the people are called Kiwis and the bird featured in the animation lives, also a Kiwi.
But sure yeah, Oz and NZ same country, much like Canadia and America or England and Wales. - rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In NZ they are called Kiwi Fruit. And the birds are sufficiently rare that they don't tend to come up in conversation anyway, so not much chance of confusion there.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well I expected they would be more common here but didnt realise they are apparently nearly non existant elsewhere, and oranges are defiantly more common
- hukedonfonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why peel them at all, just cut it in half and scoop everything out with a spoon.
- Cine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also had no idea Kiwis were uncommon. Hey, I'm eating one right now! Cut in half, and scooped out with a spoon. Way easier than peeling it.
- goat2, on 10/12/2007, -39/+4i give it 2 "Eh"'s

damn you for making me sad. ;~( - scoyndizzle, on 10/14/2007, -3/+29So cute. I loved it. Awesome job to whomever made this.

- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Agreed. That simple animation provoked more emotion in me than anything George Lucas has done. Lucas does great eye candy, but this is a simple story told elegantly.
In the world of animation, this was a haiku. - GreySkiesBlue, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Wow davecor, that was elegant, I wish I could digg your comment up higher.

- DavidDigg, on 10/12/2007, -21/+7I hope this message will reach people who find this animation difficult to forget...
I suffered from clinical depression for several years (1999-2002). During that time, I regularly took recreational drugs (acid, ecstasy, marijuana) and went to all-night parties. This animation evokes the exact memory of what it is like to contemplate suicide. You want to remember all the freedom, all of the honest, fun things you have ever experienced, and then you want everything to be over with so you won't have to deal with the world the next day. I chose to use antidepressants (Celexa for 14 months and now St. John's Wort), and I also talked with a psychologist on and off for 18 months or so (not a psychiatrist - I found them a little creepy).
In the end, I've concluded that my brain is more or less defective in the motivation department, and I've decided to engage in a variety of programs which I can only describe as "psychological technology." These programs have been basically effective, but they involve things like a) telling a young woman, "it is just so incredible how my life has changed since I've met you" in order to sleep with her and b) taking Jesus seriously. (Jesus was a wacky guy. If you can take Jesus seriously, you can take a lot of things seriously)
This "psychological technology" is exactly analogous to the "physical technology" where a physically disabled person gets a prosthetic limb. As far as I can tell, some people get depressed "by accident" and they get better when they get out of a particular situation, but some people really have grave deficiencies in the neurotransmitter department and need stronger stuff.
A close friend of mine, who just recently put his Ph. D on hold for health reasons, expressed a great deal of angst about losing his "personality" when he was planning to start work (I told him that after working for a year, I've changed a lot...I think for the better). I've found that people who have lived through depression and who take medications generally have a less possessive view of the concept of "personality." This may be because personality is no longer organic when it is augmented by medications in the same way that a body is no longer organic when it is augmented by prosthetics.
Hope this sheds some light on the subject...BTW I still do drugs ;)- masscrazy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Sad story. Dont forget Drugz are baaad!
- itsthemechanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13You fool. You should kick for good, and find other ways to get your thrills. I've been through the same treadmill... Depression, raves, E, K, base, acid, more depression, shrink, anti-depressants, etc. etc.
The way out of it is : Kick. Completely. First the illegal drugs, then the legal ones you are using as a crutch to stay sane (antidepressants etc.). Find other more useful things to fill your life -- learn a new skill, a new sport, learn to ride motorcycles, take up base jumping, or whatever. Find a decent woman that keeps you sane. Live happily everyafter. It worked for me.
But if you think you can keep using you are deluding yourself. You are just running your brain chemistry ever further into the ground. - mickstephenson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3jesus, who asked for your life story, its an animation, comment on it. not on yourself, if you must share this with the world, write a blog and watch it not get digged, coz its boring and digg users dont want this content taking up valuable comment space
