There are reasons. Just not fancy flashy reasons. The reasons are of a more practical nature (improved security, improved multimedia support, improved support for new hardware standards (64 bit cpus, larger hard drives, additional ram, esata, etc)). Wh … (see comment)

I built one for a client recently for 650 bux. Runs vista and also flies. Dual Core 2.4 with 2 gigs of ram and mirror raid. (see comment)
