By the time Disney got around to making these movies, they had already been toned down by the Grimms (I know! Not at all what people think about those guys.) The sex had been purged and much of the violence toned down, if not removed, but they stuck with German folklore, other folklorists had done the same thing with other stories, though not to the same extent as Disney wound up doing.

They're classic tales. Most people had these stories read to them when they were younger, so it's not a far step to adapting them into movies.

For me, I have a problem with the messages we give to kids, as a society. They are sheltered and spoiled and girls are being taught to be sexy and attractive to boys from a ridiculously young age (I see it in my 4 y/o niece), while boys are being taught that affection is bad, that touching girls is sexual harassment, that superficial and body issues don't affect them, but that they should be as perfect as the Hollywood role models we provide for them.

The world has changed, but I don't think the messages have, at least not to the degree they ought to. more …
