The stem cells used were adult stem cells. Research using these has always been allowed and have shown good results. The controversy has been over embryonic stem cells which have shown to be of no practical use. (see comment)

Adult stem cell (the likes of which was used here) has always been allowed. It is the embryonic stem cell research that has been the problem. The funny thing is that no benefits from the use of embryonic stem cells has been found yet. (see comment)

No, people only debate the use of embryonic stem cells. If you notice this used the patients own adult stem cells. In fact you will notice that all the the successful uses of stem cells were adult stem cells and not embryonic ones. (see comment)
