Intel's already sampling 512Mb versions (read: 64MB), which is incredibly density for these devices, though they are the binary PCM version. This would effectively double the space (1Gb/128MB), storing the data across all four PCM crystal states. (see comment)

Torvalds: Microsoft is bluffing on patents
Comment in News (17 diggs, 0 replies) - on 02/05/2008
Either that, or it really is pretty much exactly as Torvalds himself says (in the article no less): "[W]hy I don't think Microsoft really seriously would go after patents is when you're a convicted monopolist in the marketplace you really should not be su … (see comment)

IPv6 has 2^64 addresses. That gives every human being alive roughly two billion addresses. Every single computer in the entire world can have its own block of a few hundred thousand IPv6 addresses without any significant worry about the future. IPv6 was d … (see comment)

Why wouldn't they? Kernel releases are typically supportable for very, very long times, so it makes sense to go with the newest stable kernel possible (in this case 2.6.24), and keep applying updates as they come down the pipeline. The major support issue … (see comment)

Hmm, doubtful. Even if they were three times more expensive that the most expensive NANDs on the market (which is absurd), you're still only looking at $40/gig. But then again I couldn't see myself paying $160 for 4GB of Flash in today's market. (see comment)

For the whole "file browser" mess; all of that code was recently rewritten, means it's still very, very buggy, untranslated and still weird in parts (there are a few strange grammatical issues I've seen, but nothing the language teams won't find and fix q … (see comment)

Flash is non-volatile in the sense that when the power goes away, the data persists. Of course, a surge could damage the device, but it would just as soon damage any hard disk controller as well, so that argument's pretty silly. As for wear and tear, it's … (see comment)

That's not bad for a first generation product, though at that fast of a read/write rate, you're much more likely to hit bad blocks. Give it a few more generations for the kinks to work out and they'll be back in the millions range again. Or just bond the … (see comment)

Phones, cameras, embedded device firmwares, the list goes on and on. The interesting thing will be to see what MLC variants are capable of (in both density and speed). (see comment)

Close sourcing their game, sure. Close sourcing a platform-independence layer? Stupid. "Aimbots" and such can be built into the game above the toolkit, or even below it as many game vendors already do, they do NOT need to go into the indirection layer. Th … (see comment)

Close, actually. Less cycles on CPUs (which allow CPUs like the Core 2 to drop to a lower C* state), and powering off unused hardware (such as spinning down hard disks, turning off extra buses when they're not in use, etc). These are Direct ways that an … (see comment)

Or you know, the device originally cost $200/box to build (so they sold it at $300), now after building a million of them, the price is down to less than $150/box. Economies of scale are just lost on people today. (see comment)
