He means "Redmond-free" (as the article says). Proprietary-free would excluded adobe and apple products. I highly doubt people will be able to live without flash or their ipod/iphone for a week. That said people swearing off MS, is hardly news. (see comment)

Q: is it time to write off the desktop? A: No, they will, for the time being, be more attractive to businesses (less expensive, more durable, more secure). The article pointed out a few pluses for the enterprise, but they overlooked some big minuses. (see comment)

Not to be a downer on everyones enthusiasm, but Princeton Harvard and Yale have been doing this for years. @The socialism/liberalism remarks - there is a HUGE difference between an endowment (a donation) and taxation. Namely choice. (see comment)
