If this occurred in the USA they would have been arrested for breaking and entering and trespassing, at the least (probably destruction of private property for the locks, and if they took anything at all from the house they'd be looking at burglary charge … (see comment)

Wrong - check out page two of the article comments. Debtorrent, as far as I know, is not compatible with Ubuntu repos. On top of that, if you follow the simplified instructions, you will see you just need to download the deb from the authors site. (see comment)
