Well, a lot of time passed and cairo is still improving: the last stable branch is 1.6 and now it is used by a LOT of projects (Gtk+ and gecko are two examples). (see comment)

I third that. A single project in the GNU world is at least as important as the kernel: the C library. If not mentioned in wikipedia don't mean it doesn't exist! (see comment)
