Solaris doesn't need to "catch up" to Ubuntu. It has a larger server base than Ubuntu and will have a larger base for quite some time. (see comment)

Basic is all you need. You have access to everything the stuff with cash has...you just don't have support and you don't have it installed and configured by default. YOU have to do the lifting on the free version. (see comment)
