Vista fixed a lot of what was broken in XP, but it came at a point when most users had learned to live with the breaks. Don't go by reputation alone, a lot of the initial bashing was undeserved and based on inaccurate info. (see comment)

That must be an old quote. I am not a hard core gamer, but with the latest drivers all my games run just fine under Vista. Granted "all my games" means Half Life 2 and variants, but thats without any noticeable glitches attributable to the OS. (see comment)
