I can explain what is it. For example, if I will create an application to post on blogs(spams), I will test with one of known URLs for begin, not with my domain. I don't think, that Google need advertising and page rank :) (see comment)

You are probably right that keyword prices for more common searches are inflated, but I would argue that the concept of the 'long tail' may provide continued earnings for Google once those come back down to earth. (see comment)
