business, I also ran vista RC1 (which was ultimate based) on my 3ghz single core with 1gb of ram at the time. it may help that its a centrino and they tend to be pretty good in the performance per specs area. (see comment)

I run vista fine on my 1.8ghz single core with 1gb of ram and an x300 visual studio chews up the ram pretty well but besides that vista runs fine, all effects on and all. (see comment)
