This has been possible and was reported about here awhile ago. Difference is that the prior story used normal torrent files and didn't require a change. You just selected to stream or download via different links..I think Sumotorrent has it. (see comment)

Yes you can have AIM run in the background, there's an option to auto exit aim when you close the app, uncheck it or don't check it in the first place and aim will stay logged in, not sure if you can still get messages but the person replying saying iphon … (see comment)
