ZEITGEIST ADDENDUM movie now available.
JDenigmaHere is that controversial movie Zeitgeist. Before now, I had paid little attention to it so I didn't know much about it nor did I care to. However, I just watched the whole thing and I have some mixed feelings about it.
I'm sending this as a shout not necessarily because I wholly endorse it or agree with all of it but rather because of certain elements of it that I want to have cleared up further along with the fact that though there are some questionable elements of it there are also some intriguing and moving parts of it, particularly the positive, inspirational parts of it towards the end concerning futurism, technology, a peaceful species that the video hints at abolishing religion and the State as well it seems. I'm not so sure the video necessarily endorses that, but it seemed to hint at that.
There were parts of the video that I agreed with which I have a soft spot for such as the focus on the Federal Reserve at the beginning and the visionary, futuristic focus on a peaceful Utopia with technology advancing the standard of living for everyone and the criticisms of government and religion in the video.
However, putting aside some of the conspiratorial elements of the video which I don't particularly go for, my main beef with this video after having watched it, is how it seems to get hung up on criticizing such things as "money", "profit motive" and "free market capitalism" as being inherently bad and corrupting. It seems to lump it in with pseudo-free market capitalism as the Federal Reserve and global mercantilism and confuses the two with each other thus unnecessarily bashing money and the free market and giving it a bad name. That is the part of this movie that I don't like and it uses that criticism as a segway into their vision of a future Utopia based upon this nebulous "resource based economy" as it's not entirely clear as to what is meant by that and how they profess it would work absent currency, whether they intend it to mean some voluntary, market based system that is decentralized and naturally evolves towards that or whether it is intended to mean some sort of "technocracy" in which the resources and preferred alternative energy technology are to be dictated by some social engineers and scientists through central planning who know what is best for us rather than a market based economy determining it. It is not clear to me as to which perspective there they are coming from on that.
When I hear anyone talk about doing away with money and talking about it as if it is inherently evil, it just sends up red flags for me as it sounds sort of socialist Utopian like in the Star Trek sense. Maybe that's not what is intended by this video or the Venus Project, but that is just my natural suspicion when I hear such propaganda.
The video talks about money and employment as being inherently bad and slavery. The real issue is not money, but rather government. Without the State, money wouldn't be a problem. Money is not the root of all evil. Rather it is the corrupting influences of power as found in authoritarianism and collectivism with government and religion that are the root of all evil. Money only becomes corrupting in influence when it is in collusion with the State. Absent state involvement, there is nothing wrong with rational self-interest and self-preservation that guides human nature in using currency as a medium of exchange for transactions unlike this video which seems to put down Adam Smith and "free market rhetoric" as creating all these injustices that are in reality created moreso by the State. The problem is we don't even have a true free market in existence today, but time and time again it takes the blame in spite of that.
Maybe on some level I'm getting the wrong impression from the video on that issue and am misunderstanding where they're coming from. I mean, I can agree to and be open minded about the idea that the human race can evolve to a sort of Utopia that would make much of the conventional way of life today in the rat race obsolete with eliminating the need for many conventional jobs and currency to purchase things that will become infinitely abundant through voluntary solutions involving technology. If the human race evolves towards some Utopia like that it should be in a voluntary process in which the usage of currency is voluntary to opt in or out of based upon supply and demand along the lines of the vision of an achievable Utopia that Mary Ruwart outlines in her book "Healing Our World in an Age of Aggression". In that sense, I could see what they're saying and see it perhaps being possible, but it would only be achievable in a world where the abstraction of the State is abolished altogether. Certainly some things could become less relevant and not needed by the increase of infinite supply and abundance and giving people more free time through a higher standard of living. One sort of technological means of providing that would be through the theoretical holy grail of nano-technology, that being the replicator machine in which one could create whatever their hearts desire out of thin air. So yeah, at that point, there would no longer be a need to even buy things I suppose. That would be a point where the human race starts to achieve some sort of Nirvana and becomes more god like.
The crux of the matter though is how these people are professing to get from point A to point B. In a "resource based economy", you can't achieve that Utopia through a world in which government still exists in which the "techocrats" from on high decide how to divvy up the allocation and distribution of resources as opposed to letting the market self-regulating that. I endorse the positive message of this video for the evolution of the human race, but that evolution requires the eventual extinction of the cultural artifacts of government and religion created by mankind. Perhaps this will be the next great evolutionary leap for mankind. We are poised for some sort of jump like that at this critical juncture in our world where the Internet will play a role in reaching that critical mass. There do seem to be some common threads of spiritual enlightenment and awakening that run through messages promoted in videos like this, in books by Mary Ruwart, by New Ager types, timeless wisdom of ancient philosophers. If we transition to some alternative paradigm of a futuristic Utopia in which modern day free enterprise involving currency is no longer used, it will happen through a natural, voluntary progression through evolution, but it will not and can not happen through mandating at the hands of government. If it is what is needed for the human race, we will naturally evolve towards it. There is no need to FORCE it. The marketplace absent government will work that out. That is the fundamental premise. A peaceful Utopian future involves the abolishment of all initiation of force and fraud.
Our world at this moment seems to stand at a precipice where our species on this planet happens to be in the last stages, the death throes of a primitive Type 0 civilization as hypothesized by some theoretical physicists and astronomers. As also theorized in the different level of classifications of civilizations on planets, most are predicted to not successfully make the critical jump from a dangerous Type 0 civilization to Type 1 status as they go extinct through their own self-destruction or natural cataclysm. We're an immature, primitive Type 0 and with modern day governments and weapons we are ultimately facing our own existential questions of what we may wind up doing to ourselves and our place in this universe. At the rate we're going, we're going to go extinct through our own primitive foolishness. Any peaceful, far advanced species would look down upon as being such barbarians. This is also why I believe any far advanced extraterrestrials are likely to be peaceful. They wouldn't have been able to advance to such a point and survive without having learned to evolve spiritually. I guess it would be the universe's way of separating the wheat from the chaff. So much like any sort of spiritual, positive, futurist message, we are facing an urgent call now to make some real changes, not some phony baloney political changes. In the larger scheme of things, we truly are in dangerous times now and now is the time where we must make the right choices to evolve and go through a "punctuated equilibrium" by allowing ourselves to face the challenges that come from liberty. Stop dragging our knuckles on the ground and learn to respect our neighbors choices. Stop trying to control people and learn peaceful, voluntary behavior. The human race has already faced evolutionary changes from cro-magnon man to our brains physically evolving from our upper paleolithic hunter gatherer days where our diet on meat played a role in the evolution of the expansion of our brains. We came out of the swamps and developed tribes, city-states, and modern day governments and religion, all of which we continue to hang onto. The human race started to see some spiritual evolution from the Age of Enlightenment when human knowledge expanded and the State and the Divine Right of Kings was being questioned more and more. Then however came the bloody 20th century and the evolution of the human race took a step backwards as the tug of war with the State was giving into more control of the State through domestic control and warfare between States. We are facing a new Age of Enlightenment with the modern day information age and the Internet. Will we make the next evolutionary leap to evolve beyond the primitive, reptilian part of our brain where we learn the message of voluntary cooperation and peace and get rid of all power and authority? The choice is now or we are literally facing extinction.
We can all have a much better world of wealth, abundance, peace, technology, spiritual yearning and inquiry into the nature of the universe and exploration into the next great frontier, but only if we learn the right lessons and make the choice to once and for all abandon all institutions of coercion and violence. Maybe then we can see the positive vision of the future as envisioned by Project Venus.
