The name is a bit of a misnomer. What defines the Pacific Garbage Patch is that the plastic to plankton ratio is 5 to 1. No: It's not an island. Plastic breaks down - but it never decomposes. So you end up with rice like sized pieces of plastic. So it' … (see comment)
