- tuce63, on 01/23/2008, -10/+320I like how its a saltwater pool...about 20 meters from the ocean.
- ChronicColonic, on 01/23/2008, -1/+247"So, how much do you make a year?", asked Dave. "$350,000." replied Allen. "What do you do?" "I clean a pool."
- Easyoffbam, on 01/23/2008, -1/+198Imagine Marco Polo in that.....
- logosx1, on 01/23/2008, -3/+130I know it's odd, but many people don't care to interact with riptides, sharks, seaweed, jellyfish, or rocks.
- sjinadasa, on 01/23/2008, -2/+128115ft deep ? Thats insane.
- Daveecee, on 01/23/2008, -1/+108In before Dubai actually MAKES a small ocean for the sole purpose of 1-upping Chile
- rangermatt, on 01/23/2008, -0/+105From what I've read (and I've never been to Chile so I'm not sure), the Chilean beaches are very dangerous because the continental shelf drops off very near the coast, creating dangerous riptides and undertows. Supposedly it's actually illegal to swim in the ocean near that resort because it is so dangerous - you have to drive a few miles from that resort to get to the closest swimming beach. And then when you do, the water is pretty cold.
So yeah, it might seem silly and a waste of money, but if at least it provides a chance to swim in a safe environment. - Vergs, on 01/23/2008, -10/+109Welcome to our Pool. Notice there is "P" in it. Please "P" all you want, because you aren't going to make a dent!
- nachochease, on 01/23/2008, -1/+88Did nobody RTFA? The pool is 9 degrees Celsius warmer than the ocean it's beside! For those of you who don't know metric, that's a helluva lot warmer than the ocean!
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -7/+67Just think of how many hookers you could drown in that thing!
- RyomaNagare, on 01/23/2008, -0/+59Well since its seems I'm the only digger from Chile, who used to have a small cabin in Algarrobo (not San Alfonso) Mind you I can explain some stuff.
The San Alfonso's RESORT, are lots of small departments. built like cabins, its really art-deco, and the depts are insanely small.
The town of Algarrobo, is and old vacation spot, that's been lately going downhill, there's virtually nothing worthwhile to do.
The sea in the coasts of Chile is cooled by the Humboldt Stream, all the way from the Antarctic continent so the sea is really cold. even in summer.
San Alfonso used to have artificial Lagoons and beaches, the pool is next to them.
the lagoons, are like someone suggested earlier receded into the ocean.
the thing you need to know is if by any chance you get bored of swimming in the pool, or lagoons, using the gym, or surfing the Internet you are *****, there is nothing else to do.
NO cinema, no theater, no decent restaurants, no amusing parks, nothing.
at least we don't have sharks, they froze to death on their way here.
Also, there is no way that thing costed 1000M british pounds, this is a small country and We'd know about it. - slightlygifted, on 01/23/2008, -6/+65115ft deep end? i dont think it would be safe to touch the bottom. you would get bends or something.
- kirb59y, on 01/23/2008, -5/+63Basically it is a small ocean.
- whymanwhy, on 01/23/2008, -2/+57Nothing like soccer moms on digg
- 89vision, on 01/23/2008, -0/+54keep the sharks out.
- jdh358, on 01/23/2008, -0/+53That would have destroyed the whole Caddy Shack movie. It would have been 15 hours long while Bill Murray searched for the "Baby Ruth"
- 89vision, on 01/23/2008, -0/+53Nothing like strapping your son to an inflatable battery and putting him in a giant pool.
- crocodilexp, on 01/23/2008, -0/+48The ocean water is too Chile for swimming.
- ShoGunX900, on 01/23/2008, -2/+49thats alot of waterskiiing squirrels...
- Motodog, on 01/23/2008, -4/+513,500 ft long pool with 3 people in it, looks sucksesful.
- tophu, on 01/23/2008, -1/+47"Chile's monster pool uses a computer- controlled suction and filtration system to keep fresh seawater in permanent circulation, drawing it in from the ocean at one end and pumping it out at the other."
It's that close to the ocean because that's where they get the water.
"The sun warms the water to 26c, nine degrees warmer than the adjoining sea."
That's 79 degrees F, versus 63 for the adjoining ocean, so it does make a difference. - ElGigi, on 01/23/2008, -0/+44You're right. I live in Chile and have been a lot of times in Algarrobo. The beach near that resort is not an enabled beach for swimming, since it has no installations or lifeguards. And yes, the water is very cold in that area.
- PopovIsovSerov, on 01/23/2008, -2/+41but the swimmers are *****
- skyfox2k, on 01/23/2008, -0/+39and then killed
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -0/+36The pool is 26C or 9 Degrees warmer than the ocean. RTFA. Google the difference if you need to do the conversion. The pool is about 78F while the ocean is about 62F. Excuse me while I go use the heated ocean while you get a bad case of shrinkage in the real ocean.
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -1/+36I'd prefer more islands in the middle of it, 'cause you'll have to swim a hell of a long way to get back to land.
- loneBoat, on 01/23/2008, -0/+32and the circle of life starts again
::Lion King music:: - cawfee, on 01/23/2008, -1/+32Add a few hungry sharks and you've got yourself a new live-action TV series!
- KingBabi, on 01/23/2008, -1/+30"Once"
- Daiken, on 01/23/2008, -1/+30I feel sorry for the soccer mom who's profile says she's a 41 year old guy.
- bertbarndoor, on 01/23/2008, -0/+26The shark would be fine.
- COinOR, on 01/23/2008, -1/+26depends on what he's wearing...
- PaulLewis, on 01/23/2008, -1/+26That won't stop me from trying!
- kinseyincanada, on 01/23/2008, -3/+27that would suck to have to do laps in.
- quomen, on 01/23/2008, -2/+26Nothing like strapping your mom..I won't go there.
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -2/+26DIBBLE-DABBLE!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dibble_Dabble - VintageMud, on 01/23/2008, -3/+26The only way you'd get 'the bends' is if you were at 115 ft and breathing compressed gas (ie - SCUBA) and surfaced too quickly. You can technically dive as deep as you can hold your breath, assuming that breath was taken on the surface, without fear of getting bent.
- trotskyist, on 01/23/2008, -28/+51They spent nearly 2 billion dollars to build a small ocean, right next to the ocean.
Am I the only one missing how this could have EVER sounded like a good idea? - culliganman, on 01/23/2008, -1/+23this pool blows...where are the slides?
- CedEx, on 01/23/2008, -0/+21and then pooped.
- scallon, on 01/23/2008, -2/+22I'm curious, since they describe this as a "man-made saltwater lagoon," if I were to drop, iunno say a great white shark or something in there, would it survive? I mean i know there aren't other fish for it to eat, but until it starved to death. I mean regular pools are a.) fresh water, and b.) chlorinated to hell and back so fish and what not are killed. But since this is salt water, what would happen?
Just curious. If there are any marine biologists or the like out there let me know. - andshewas, on 01/23/2008, -0/+20Generally, humans don't "drink gallons" of salt water when they swim.
- willx99, on 01/23/2008, -0/+19...because Russia is the only country that uses the metric system?
- simism, on 01/23/2008, -1/+19put a fake reef in, and you've got yourself a dive site. Oh wait, Dubai has already done that...
- matude, on 01/23/2008, -0/+18Ocean in Chile is dangerous and cold.
- volacide, on 01/23/2008, -0/+17Suspended above the city itself!
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -2/+19and then digested.
- inactive, on 01/23/2008, -1/+18Didn't you get the memo?
- harzack86, on 01/23/2008, -0/+16It's 9 degrees warmer than the nearby ocean just with the sun warming up the pool. For the hotel guests, that must make a big difference :-)
- tekiek, on 01/23/2008, -2/+18If you build it, they will come
