- binky79, on 09/29/2008, -7/+109I've never been on a cruise before. I've always thought of it as going on vacation and being quarantined to the hotel.
- MattFid, on 09/29/2008, -11/+105But will it run Crysis?
- nonymous666, on 09/29/2008, -1/+46No, this ship is safe... There aren't any icebergs anymore.
- xgambetx, on 09/29/2008, -8/+44its the titanic all over again!
- arch3r, on 09/29/2008, -4/+34I, for one, welcome our new largest cruise ship overlords.
- ColonelKilkenny, on 09/29/2008, -3/+29http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_of_the_Seas
Just one example.
It's big but still buried as inaccurate. - xerikx, on 09/29/2008, -0/+26Good thing it will be hosting drunk sorority girls on their way to Cancun and not through icebergs
- dafragsta, on 09/29/2008, -4/+28Hey! ***** you, two of my friends died running Crysis on largest cruise ships in the world!
- chanop, on 09/29/2008, -2/+24I accidently the whole cruise ship
- MacBookForMe, on 09/29/2008, -10/+29And we talk bout financial crisis? :)
- dvsbastard, on 09/29/2008, -3/+21In Soviet Russia, world's largest cruise ship sails YOU!
- thepeacemaker, on 09/29/2008, -3/+21I took a one week caribbean cruise vacation for the first time last year and absolutely loved it (Galveston-Honduras-Belize-Cozumel-Costa Maya-Galveston). Of course there are the all day stops to enjoy (scuba diving, snorkeling, dolphin swim, etc) but the things you can do on the ship itself are a treat in themselves. Some of the best features:
- movies under the stars (laying on a beach chair under the sky on the top deck of the ship sipping hot chai and watching a movie)
- all u'd ever want to eat free food
- really funny stand up comedy shows, live bands
- half the crew Indian [being the only Indian couple on board we got extra special service by my fellow countrymen :-)]
...and all this for $600 bucks a pop!!! - sdellboy, on 09/29/2008, -2/+19Lt. Kif Kroker: This is a pleasure cruise. Our path is decided by the travel agency.
Captain Zapp Brannigan: That's for schoolgirls. Now here's a course with some chest hair.
Lt. Kif Kroker: But that leads us straight through a comet field.
Captain Zapp Brannigan: Ah, yes. Comets, the icebergs of the sky. By jackknifing off one after another at breakneck speed, we can create a gravity boost, or something. - Modiga, on 09/29/2008, -1/+17Buoyancy.
- SurrealEstate, on 09/29/2008, -4/+18I'll be the first to admit that I don't know anything about the physics of buoyancy, but... doesn't that thing look kind of top-heavy?
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 09/29/2008, -2/+164chan, in MY Digg?
- Mataroo, on 09/29/2008, -0/+13Holy crap... how deep is the channel that it's floating through?
- kevyn, on 09/29/2008, -0/+12I enjoyed the fact that I woke up in a different country every morning, and had all the food in the world to eat...
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -1/+13It's more likely than you think...
- toconnor, on 09/29/2008, -1/+13They say it is unsinkable.
- thcobbs, on 09/29/2008, -1/+12The keel on that thing has to be huge... think about the Nimitz class air-craft carriers. They look like they should tip over, but due to the keel they remain upright. Even Sailboats have a long ass keel on them that keeps them from tipping over in the wind.
- Arbinshire, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10This is definitely not the world-largest cruise ship. The RCCL Voyager Series at 140,000 gross tones initially took that throne, then were superseded by the Queen Mary II at 150,000 gross tones. The upcoming RCCL Oasis Class (2009) will dwarf all of these at 220,000 gross tonnes. (First build, Oasis of the Seas) So no, this is by far, NOT the largest ship in the world at a mere 120,000 gross tonnes.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -1/+11That's pretty much it.
It's las vegas on a boat. The ones that go from place to place and stay to each place for a few nights are cool though.
I worked on two, one in the north of Canada and one that visited the Mediterranean. North of Canada was incredibly boring. Beautiful, but very very boring. - Mootabolife, on 09/29/2008, -1/+11No, this one gets taken out by the LHC.
- oldhick, on 09/29/2008, -1/+11Except the gambling isn't regulated by any entities. That's why everyone wins on the first night to get you hooked, then... No more!
They don't have any legal responsibility to NOT cheat... - sassy343, on 09/29/2008, -2/+12Thats noting Look what royal caribbean is building http://www.oasisoftheseas.com/
It will carry double the people of that ship, and weights over 220,000 tons. And is coming next year. - mufasa, on 09/29/2008, -2/+11It will only be the largest for a short amount of time, RCCL's Oasis Of The Seas comes out late '09 and can take 5400 passengers..
http://www.oasisoftheseas.com/ - cdigioia, on 09/29/2008, -3/+12Kinda of...but the value comes when the ship docks into a different port every day (or close to it). So every night you sleep in the ship while it sails, then every morning awake to explore a new city in the south of France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc.
That said, I kind of agree with you, and they seem a bit expensive, so I've never taken one. Closest I've done is a sleeper train :p - hankidic, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8Titanic was a lifeboat by comparison at only 46,328 tons VS todays largest ships, RCI's Freedom class @ 154,000 tons.
- Math, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8Do newspapers not do any basic fact-checking anymore?
It's especially worrying when it just involves a quick check on Wikipedia. - shaunj66, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8I think selebrety solsticisis is a pretty cool ship. eh kills voyagers and doesnt afraid of anything.
- mytruckhasdents, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8...that's what she said.
- brainflakes, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6Solstice vs Titanic
Tonnage: 122,000 - 46,328
Length: 1,033 ft - 882 ft
Beam: 121 ft - 92 ft
Capacity: 4,350 - 3,547 (passengers and crew) - loquax, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6It will get clawed by a pissed off polar bear and sink...
- dsmx, on 09/29/2008, -1/+7I've seen bigger....
- deviouskoopa, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5I hope Celine Dion goes nowhere near this ship.
- FatPhizzle, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5But will it blend?
- tj111, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5Wonder how this one does on rough seas? http://www.metacafe.com/watch/503533/rough_cruise/
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4That's gotta be the second-biggest boat I've ever seen!
- fruscianteisgod, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4sappy love story: 0 -1
- Spawn2105, on 09/29/2008, -5/+9Yes, but will it blend?
- texas85, on 09/29/2008, -2/+6that's what she said..
- fhernand, on 09/29/2008, -1/+5I like satellites
- Queue29, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Don't worry, it will belong to the Chinese soon enough.
- hankidic, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3The water is actually cleaner when it goes out than when it goes in. The water treatment plants on modern cruise ships usually rivals most city's.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3It can hold OVER 9000 passeengers.
- wastelander, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebrity_Solstice
"After completion she will be the largest cruise ship built in Germany"
Yeah.. sounds like they misread the press release. - EtherGnat, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3"and they seem a bit expensive"
There are valid criticisms of cruises, but I don't think price is one of them. My wife and I paid about $1,000 total including taxes and port fees for a seven night cruise. That includes lodging, meals, entertainment, and transportation. The only thing we spent additional money on was shopping/souvenirs, alcoholic beverages, and port excursions.
If you don't have to spend a lot of money getting to your cruise it's one of the best deals going, and even if you do it's not a horrible deal. - Gryffydd, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Wow, snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming with dolphins on dry land? Awesome!
- dekuscrub, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3The Cruise Line industry seems to be recession-proof.
Every line is growing and shows no signs of slowing down. -
